Thursday Afternoon Edition

Thursday Night Matchup

I won’t pretend to be a prophet or have a crystal ball, but I have a feeling tonight’s matchup could lean heavily one way. The Bills are coming off a disappointing Week 7 loss to the Patriots and with some home cooking on a Thursday, this may be just what they need to bounce back. With three straight games with a pick, Josh Allen will be looking to turn that page.

On the other side, the Buccaneers also suffered a Week 7 home loss to the Falcons, but a road tilt against the Bills may not be timely. Quarterback Baker Mayfield has remained middle of the pack as the fantasy QB17 much of this season, but he is coming off one of his better showings from a week ago. He will have his work cut out for him tonight against a hostile Bills crowd.

Here are my favorites for tonight;

Josh Allen (Bills-QB) Of course everything starts with the Bills signal caller. All things go through Allen and a big night I am predicting for the fantasy QB1. Allen squares off against a Bucs defense that has allowed the 8th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Allen should account for at least two scores tonight.

Latavius (Bill-RB) This one feels like one of those games where the Bills will move the ball well and set up a couple of goalline opportunities. I expect to see Bills running back James Cook to have success between the 20’s, setting up an opportunity or two for Murry to vulture a score tonight. Murray is on my DFS radar in this one.

Stefon Diggs (Bills-WR) It’s been the Allen-to-Diggs show this season and with a primetime matchup on the slate for Week 8, it should be more of the same. Diggs (fantasy WR2) is the second most targeted wide receiver in the NFL this season, so it should be business as usual for this duo. Diggs baseline is six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. He’s a lock to put up similar numbers tonight.

Mike Evans (Buccaneers-WR) The Bills secondary of late has proven to be a little shaky. Evans (fantasy WR14), with his size, will be a matchup nightmare, especially in the Red Zone. Evans is averaging 9 targets per game over his last two outings, so he should see a steady diet of looks in this one.

Dalton Kincaid (Bills-TE) Coming off his best game and fantasy showing this season, the Bills rookie tight end will look to build off this momentum tonight. With veteran tight end Dawson Know already shelved, Kincaid could see an increased role tonight that pays dividends for fantasy owners.

10 Things for Sunday

We are getting closer to the season’s mid-point and the Byes are flexing this week with six teams out. Despite the fewer games, this week should provide plenty of fireworks, lots of scoring, and fantasy points much to the delight of fantasy managers. As we look over the slate of games today, what’s has your attention?

Here are the 10 quick questions or things on my mind.

1. Is this the Josh Jacobs Breakout game?

The Raiders running back certainly looks primed to breakout. He’s averaging the second most touches of all running backs over the last three weeks, including the most carries (20+) and second most receptions with 5 per game. The production has yet to catch up, but the workload certainly appears to be there. It’s a good matchup today and a chance for Jacobs to have a big day.

2. Can Diggs do it again?

I say yes. The Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been on quite a heater of late. He’s managed to record at least 100 yards receiving in four straight games with at least 6 catches. For the season Diggs has hit the century mark 5 of 6 games and scored 19 or more fantasy points in those contests. Last year Diggs, in two games, averaged 7.0 receptions, 98.0 yards receiving, and 1.0 touchdowns. Someone queue the Brittany Spears jam.

3. Is Barkley healthy and ready to roll?

Last week against the Bills on Sunday night, down the stretch Barkley showed some flash with a couple nifty runs. He looked a lot like the Week 2 Barkley we saw earlier this season. I believe he’s ready to roll and could have success today against the Commanders who allow better than 4.5 yards per carry this season.

4. Can Mayfield Shake n Bake on Sunday?

This is more of a hunch than anything else. I like the home matchup against the Falcons defense, who have recorded the 5th fewest sacks and allowed the 5th most passing touchdowns. I am thinking Baker to Evans for six in this one.

5. Will Flowers bloom on Sunday?

We are getting closer to the winter season, but that shouldn’t matter for the Ravens rookie receiver. Over the past two weeks his targets per game at Top-12, so he should see plenty of opportunities today to put up decent numbers. Continue to trust the bloom of Flowers.

6. Is the third game a charm for Kupp?

The Rams receiver has looked great in his return totaling 15 receptions for 266 yards receiving and a touchdown. I love this matchup this week against the Steelers (ranked 25th against the pass) and expect Kupp to have another big game. Third time is always a charm.

7. Can Walker make it 5 in a row?

I say Kenneth Walker can score a rushing touchdown today to make it 5 straight games. He’s not compiling huge yardage numbers, but his 6 rushing scores this season have him elevated to the No.8 fantasy RB slot. Facing the Cardinals 24th ranked run defense Walker will have a chance to improve his rushing numbers (345 yards this season) as well as his touchdowns.

8. Is Sunday time for the Hollywood Shuffle?

The Cardinals primary receiver has been targeted heavily (31 times) the last three weeks heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Seahawks. The Seahawks rank 28th against the pass and allow the most fantasy points to opposing receivers. This one is lining up to be a big day for Hollywood Brown.

9. Can Aaron Jones run wild against the Broncos?

The Packers running back says he feels good and should be ready to go against the Broncos. The Mile High defense has been absent all season allowing the most yards on the ground and yards per carry this season. Jones is a dual threat out of the backfield and could be in for a big day leading the Packers backfield.

10. Can Swift shine on Sunday night?

After his blow up performance in Week 2, the Eagles running back has steadily been returning to earth. His fantasy numbers (No.12 fantasy RB for the season) are still very good, but today’s matchup with the Dolphins, offers a great opportunity. The Phins have allowed the 9th most rushing yards to running backs and those numbers should climb even more today.

Targets Equal Opportunities

The formula for success never changes. Fantasy gold for managers starts with chances and opportunities and in week six there were plenty players who found opportunity and cashed in. Players like the Bills receiver Stefon Diggs (66 targets this season) continued his high rate of usage, while in Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce (46 targets this season) proves even in his 11th season he’s still among the best at his position, and out of the backfield it’s the new kid on the block, Falcons rookie running back Bijan Robinson (32 targets this season) who is showing off his hands skills.

There are a lot of familiar faces on the lists this week and a couple of new ones. Take note because success starts here.

The Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase is currently one of the highest targeted pass catchers in the league this season, especially over the last three weeks. Since Week 4, Chase is commanding a 36.9% target share and has turned his 41 targets into 28 receptions, 345 yards receiving, and three touchdowns. Currently on a bye this week, Chase will get a chance to continue his hot hand with the Bengals face the 49ers in Week 8.

Over the past three weeks only Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been targeted more than the Jaguars Evan Engram. The Jags pass receiving tight end has been targeted 23 times and recorded 18 receptions for 128 yards. While the production is a bit on the low side, his scoring has him as the fantasy TE9-tied over the past three weeks and still No.6 for the season. Even with a tough matchup this Thursday, Engram needs to be in lineups.

The Eagles running back D’Andre Swift has been a busy part of the passing game out of the backfield. Swift has been targeted (21 targets) the 3rd most of all running backs over the past three weeks collecting 18 passes for 101 receiving yards and a score. His pass receiving skills has him cracking the Top-15 (14th) fantasy scoring per game among running backs over the last three weeks. And while his rushing numbers have cooled, it’s his ppr scoring that has been carrying him recently. He’ll have a shot at improving both in a classic Sunday night showdown with the Dolphins this week.

Touches Are Fantasy Gold

Just like a receiver needs to be targeted, a running backs success leans heavily on how many times they touch (carries + catches) the rock.

With 28 touches on Sunday night against the Bills, could Saquon Barkley be back? After missing several games due to an ankle injury, Barkley made his return. After a slow start in the first half, he looked pretty good on a couple of late runs. If the Giants can continue to feed him, he could be in for a big Sunday against the Commanders.

In fantasy football luck plays its part, but success is all about chances. You can’t win if you don’t have the ball and your dudes can’t score fantasy points if they don’t have a chance.

Here are the weekly leaders for Receiving Targets;

Stefon Diggs displayed why he’s an elite receiver in the NFL turning in another 100-yard receiving performance with 10 receptions and a score. He will finish as a Top-5 fantasy receiver in 2023 at this pace.

The overall production was a bit light, but with the10 targets on Sunday tight end Zach Ertz could easily bounce back and very soon. The Cardinals air attack may continue to stall a bit here in the early season, but as long the volume is there Ertz could be fantasy relevant soon.

Running back James Cook was lead back on Monday night and dominated the Bills backfield in snaps and touches. He’s a big play waiting to happen and as long as this volume continues, he’s in line for some big games in the future.

Cam Akers was ineffective on Sunday against the Seahawks only totaling 29 yards on the ground, but you can't ignore his usage. Despite the tough treading, the Rams stayed with Akers. His 22 carries ranked tied for the most in week 1 and with that kind of work, fantasy owners can expect better outputs from Akers (so long as the workload continues).

2023 Fantasy Draft Day: On the Clock

(12-Team, PPR format, Fantasy Calculator ADP)

WR-Tyreek Hill, Current ADP 1.04 - the Dolphins dynamic wide receiver has finished 2nd (2022), 6th (2021), and 2nd (2020) in fantasy scoring over the past three seasons. He’s coming off a season with career highs in yards receiving (1,710), receptions (119), and targets (170). He’s an elite WR1 that is going early in the 1st round of fantasy drafts.

WR-Stefon Diggs, Current ADP 1.08 - the Bills wideout finished the 2022 season as the No.4 fantasy receiver. In his three seasons with the Bills Diggs has the most receptions (tied with Davante Adams) of any receiver with 338 and has averaged more than 160 targets per season. He’s a mid-to-late first rounder in fantasy drafts this season.

Who to Start?

These are some of the players I am starting today, for my Week 5 lineups;

Quarterbacks
Kirk Cousins, Min; I just love the matchup and the opportunity for the Vikings offense to get their passing game off the ground. The running game should remain healthy, but I am looking for several big plays from Cousins in the passing game.

Carson Wentz, PHI; The Eagles quarterback has been on point this early completing 61 percent of his passes, averaging 240 yards passing with 9 touchdowns on the season. Wentz is currently the No.5 scoring quarterback in fantasy. Trust in Wentz.

Running backs
Tarik Cohen, CHI; The Bears are facing a pretty good Raiders run defense, but with the absence of wide receiver Taylor Gabriel, I expect to see quite a bit of Cohen lining up in the slot. Back in week one Cohen was targeted 10 times; we could see similar numbers today.

Aaron Jones, GB; With the injury to running back Jamal Williams, it could be the Aaron Jones show today against a good Cowboys defense. Where I like Jones today, is in the pass game; Cowboys have allowed the 8th most receptions to the running back. Another silver lining, the Cowboys have not been great stopping the run, allowing 4.5 yards per carry.

Wide Receivers
Chris Godwin, TB; This is a no-brainer for me. Godwin, the No.3 fantasy scoring WR (PPR format) has been nothing short of terrific this season. Today may not be another big game because he lines up along side with the No.5 fantasy wide receiver Mike Evans. The numbers indicate he’s a safe play averaging more than 8 targets per game.

Stefon Diggs, MIN; For many of the same reasons I am rolling with Cousins, I have to insert Diggs today. The talented wide receiver is coming off a career season in 2018, but is off to a slow start. Today could be the jump start he and the passing offense need.

Tight Ends
Jared Cook, NO; I have been riding with Cook for several weeks and losing patience. He has a great matchup today against the Bucs who allow the 2nd most fantasy points to opposing tight ends. Cook has yet to breakout this season, today could be his day.

Noah Fant, DEN; This is purely a gut feel and lack of options. Not to knock the kid out of Iowa (the No. 23 fantasy TE), he’s quietly been pretty good and I believe he’ll continue his rise. Fant is averaging just a tick under 4 targets per game in an offense that is due to breakout. Last week Fant scored his first NFL touchdown, showcasing some of his athletic skills. Today could be another step forward.

Week 3: Four Horsemen

The are my week 3 starters, I’m riding with;

QB-Kirk Cousins, Vikings: It’s been a bit of a rough start this season for the Vikings passer, 25th among quarterbacks in fantasy scoring. Cousins has just 328 yards passing (ranks 30th), 22 completions (ranks 32nd), and 3 turnovers in two games. The start has been brutal, but a Week 3 matchup at home against the Raiders could offer some cure. The Raiders have allowed the 7th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, including 711 passing yards and 68% completions over the first two weeks.

RB-Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys: This is an easy call for Week 3. The Cowboys have been rolling this season and much of their success has been without the impact of Elliott. Last week Zeke (RB12 through two weeks) saw 53 snaps and was effective on the ground with 111 yards rushing. His Week 3 matchup against the Dolphins (ranked 31st against the run) could see even greater success; Zeke looks poised for a big Sunday.

WR-Stefon Diggs, Vikings: If Kirk Cousins is going to bounce back in Week 3, he’s going to need targets to throw to on Sunday. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs and his quarterback have had a few near misses for huge gains; it’s just a matter of time. Diggs (WR71, PPR scoring) has been slow out of the gate, with just 11 targets through two games; this will change. The Raiders have allowed the 4th most fantasy points and 4th most receiving yards to opposing receivers; look for a breakout game from Diggs (and AdamThielen).

TE-Vance McDonald, Steelers: The Steelers are without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who exited week 2 with an elbow injury, ending his season. With Big Ben sidelined and backup Mason Rudolph under center, Vance McDonald (TE5, PPR scoring) was a busy target in Week 2. McDonald played 52 snaps and caught 7 passes on 7 targets for 38 yards receiving with two scores. Although his matchup this week is not the best, his connection with his quarterback appears solid and could to another big Sunday.

The 5th Musketeer

Flex play-(RB) Raheem Mostert, 49ers: The Niners running back currently ranks as the fantasy RB17, PPR scoring, and with the Steelers up next, he has a chance to continue his climb up the fantasy scoring ladder. Through two games the Steelers defense has allowed the 8th most fantasy points to opposing running backs, as well as more than 100 yards rushing per game. Mostert has been a solid ball carrier this season with 123 rushing yards and a 5.6 yards per carry average; he should get plenty of run on Sunday.

Wednesday’s Weekly Wrap Up 

and Other Non-sense

So Week 2 was a bounce back week in a big way for all of my fantasy teams, largely due to some big games from my studs; Stefon Diggs (9 rec/128 yds/2 tds), Michael Thomas (12 rec/89 yds/2 tds), DeAndre Hopkins, (6 rec/110 yds/1 td), and Brandin Cooks (7 rec/159 yds). Play your studs or start your starters.

I drafted heavy for top tier receivers and benefited greatly in week 2, but not every week is going to go to script. My early picks at the running back are quickly fading with players like rookie Royce Freeman, Dion Lewis, and rookie Ronald Jones. It’s only week 2, so I am not pushing the panic button with Jones or Freeman.

The situation for Jones in Tampa is a little muddled at the moment. With all the success they are having through the air, current starter Peyton Barber (50th ranked RB in PPR), while ineffective on the ground (only averaging 2.6 yards/carry) has been afforded more time to hold the job. Jones will have to earn his way onto the field and when he does, we will see.

In Denver, Freeman (37th ranked RB in PPR) is another concern for me. There’s no question it’s a full-blown committee approach and non-stop rotation. For fellow rookie team-mate, running back Phillip Lindsay (14th ranked RB in PPR), the rotation has not affected his hot hand. Fantasy owners who used an early 4th/5th round draft pick on Freeman will have to remain patient and see how this shakes out. That will be my approach.

In the meantime, with my current RB situation a little in flux, I am streaming guys like Tevin Coleman and Giovani Bernard as starters.

With most of my leagues in the middle of waivers, a couple of streaming options I may be looking at for week 3; with LeSean McCoy banged up, running back Marcus Murphy is drawing some of my attention, and with Leonard Fournette a little dinged up as well, running back Corey Grant (coming off 6 receptions in week 2) may have some flex value.

A couple of noteworthy stashes; I am holding Broncos rookie wide receiver Courtland Sutton in a couple of leagues; his 11 targets in two games has me believing he could an interesting mid-season play. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is stashed nicely on one of my rosters; his week 2 performance has me believing who could be rediscovering his QB form.

There's nothing like pumpkin pie, turkey, and NFL football on Thanksgiving. That's what I am thankful for and hopefully everyone is enjoying this great day with family, friends, and fellow fantasy football fans. Today's slate brings us three games and plenty of football to chew on along with lots of side dish treats. Happy Thanksgiving to all and let's get this day started!

Is it Heat check time for the Vikings quarterback Case Keenum? by @FantsySprtsHome

The Vikings quarterback Case Keenum is the No.20 fantasy QB and on the rise. In his last three starts Keenum is averaging over 290 yards passing, completing better than 68 percent of his passes with 7 touchdowns. He’s playing well, but faces a tough road challenge against a Lions defense that allows the 13th fewest yards to opposing quarterbacks.

The Lions running game is ranked 28th in the league averaging just under 81 yards per game and less than 3.5 yards per carry and the Vikings are the number two defense against the run. There’s little chance these teams buck this trend, so expect a lot of quarterback Matthew Stafford today to the tune of 40 plus passes.

Quite simply, the Vikings have another big time threat in the passing game besides wide receiver Stefon Diggs, his Wonder Twin Adam Thielen. Thielen is the No.3 fantasy WR in PPR, he’s posted the 62 receptions (tied for 5th) with 916 yards receiving (2nd in the league). Thielen has arrived in 2017 and he’s a legit WR1.

The Lions defense is ranked 18th against the run and allow 4.4 yards per carry. In a road matchup where ball control and down and distance matter, Murray could see one of his busier days in the neighborhood of 20 carries. I like Murray to hit the century mark against a defense that’s allowed 313 rushing yards the past two weeks.

In the last two weeks the Cowboys defense has surrendered 311 rushing yards to opposing running backs, along with 3 touchdowns to opposing wide receivers. The Chargers Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen could find great success against a reeling Cowboys team today.

Through 11 weeks, Cousins is now the No.5 fantasy QB; he is seriously balling right now. In his last two starts he’s thrown for 649 yards, with 6 total touchdowns, just one pick, and a completion percentage of 62. Cousins is doing all he can to carry his team and make an argument that he is a Franchise QB. He’ll make another great case tonight against the G-men.

Flying High Under the Radar

Last season the Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen was hardly a household name, even in his home town. And even after posting career highs in receptions (69), yards receiving (967), and touchdowns (5), Thielen entered this season as a quiet mention and a No. 2 wide receiver.

He was last year’s No.29 fantasy WR (in PPR), but this season Thielen has arrived and after 10 weeks, he is currently the league’s No.3 fantasy wideout.

He’s no longer a groomsmen, he is a groom. Thielen is a solid No.1 WR and a must-start every week.

In 9 games this season Thielen has 56 catches (tied for 5th in the league) for 793 receiving yards (3rd in the league) and two touchdowns. He’s quickly risen to the fantasy threshold as one of the league’s top receivers.

Thielen has recorded five games with over 90 yards receiving and has 2 games this season with over 150 yards. He has also recorded at least 5 catches in every game this season, including three games with 8 or more receptions.

He and Stefon Diggs are the new Wonder Twins in Minnesota, and with these two the Vikings are having Superbowl visions.

Thielen may have entered this season under the radar, but he is clearly flying high in 2017.

Week 6 WR Rankings

The Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan has emerged as Tom Brady’s go to receiver this season. Through five games Hogan is the No.5 fantasy WR in PPR with 23 receptions for 288 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Redskins wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is currently residing outside the Top-50 fantasy WR’s in PPR through five weeks, but this could be the week he cracks that barrier. Pryor looked pretty sharp in his last game and it would have been even better had he hung onto a go ahead touchdown reception late in the 4th quarter against the Chiefs back in week 4. Coming off the bye, he’ll be fresh and ready to attack a Niners secondary that allows the 8th most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. He’s my No.14 fantasy WR this week.

With receiver Stefon Diggs sidelined this week with a groin injury, the other half of the Wonder Twins, Vikings receiver Adam Thielen should see a heavy dose of targets on Sunday. Thielen is the No.22 fantasy WR in PPR this season, but with no Diggs he’ll be the number one on Sunday and will have a great shot at moving into the Top-20.
