Week 5 "Players on the Move"

FSH: WEEK 5 PLAYERS ON THE MOVE
October 4th, 2008 7:07pm PST

Players On The Move
(WEEK 5 WAIVER WIRE)

Week 4 is in the books, and for those of us buried deep in football excitement, we're now about one third of the way into our fantasy season. So how are we doing? When you look at your team, do you cringe or do you gloat and smile? For some of you sitting at 3-1 or 4-0, you're on a roll, the pieces of the puzzle are in place, and the only thing you are looking for is some added depth to solidify your championship run. For others sitting at 2-2 or worse, this is the time to turn the tide and address your weaknesses, rebuild your strengths, and release some dead weight. Many of us owners were caught up in the preseason hype and let our emotions dictate some of our decision making. Now that the jury is in, we begin to see who's getting it done on the gridiron and who's chasing a pipe dream. It's time to start looking for the needed help, make some moves, and get our teams back on track!

As we look ahead to week 5, here are some of those players that could make the difference you need to keep the "Ws" coming or get you back into that win column!

Willy Wants Ya (Weekly)"Golden Ticket"

This week's Tickets...

RB-LeRon McClain (Bal)....the Ravens big boy has been getting it done week in and week out. McClain has been a consistent fantasy scorer with his three touchdowns on the season. It looks like HC John Harbaugh is taking a fancy to the teams "big set" power I-formation with McClain and FB Lorenzo Neal. It's not likely that McClain will ever accumulate over 100 yards, but he'll be the punisher inside the 5 getting those extra scores, and the pounder that wears the defense down in the 4th quarter. With the rookie Flacco remaining the quarterback, expect the Ravens to continue this commitment to run and McClain to be a serviceable fill-in and flex option.

WR-Steve Breaston (Ari)....the big news confirmed is Boldin is OUT making Breaston a hot item on the Waiver Wire in most leagues. Breton probably won't see the same amount of targets that Boldin would normally see, but playing opposite Fitzgerald, he's instantly a serviceable low end WR2 or flex option.

RB-Deuce McAllister (NO)....last week, the Deuce made his first start of the year and carried the ball 20 times. Although Monday is not the most favorable matchups going up against the Vikings, McAllister will give the Saints consistency running the ball inside and handle the short-yardage and goal line carries. With the Saints aerial attack, the Deuce could find a few seams and chew some yards. It's not likely he'll have a big day this Monday night, but if you need a plug-in for this week and/or down the road, with better matchups McAllister should be able to fill the void.

more "Boys on the Move"...

If your lineup has a few holes, if it's not too late to make a move, these are the guys that could provide some temporary relief you need this week.

Deion Branch WR & Bobby Engram WR (Sea)-....the Seahawks receiver has been practicing a couple of weeks and just days ago was looking very good and explosive in practice. In his first four games last season, before going down with a knee injury, Branch was leading the team with 22 receptions and Engram was second with 19. In his first three games this season, the Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck has had to search for receiver's to throw to. It shouldn't take him long to find either one of these guys. Owners shouldn't expect big results out of the gate, but if you're needing help at the position, either Seahawk should provide relief in the weeks to come!

Rudi Johnson RB (Det)-....the Lions return from the bye with a couple of changes, Johnson is now their starter at running back. Although they have he has tough matchup this week and the Lions are expecting to open things up, I expect to see Johnson stayed involved with the pass as well as the run. In week three, prior to the Lions bye week, Johnson chipped in with 83 yards rushing and 3 catches for another 48 yards. Even as the Lions starter, Johnson will likely split carries with rookie RB Kevin Smith. Fantasy owners should not consider RJ any more than a decent RB3 or flex option at this time.

Devin Hester WR (Chi)-....with the Bears receiving corp in shambles (Lloyd OUT, Booker doubtful) it looks like, if healthy Hester will draw the start this Sunday against the Lions. Hester became more involved in the offense last week against a good Eagles defense. Hester had a carry for 15 yards and added 3 catches for 27 yards, including a 20 yard touchdown reception. Facing a weak Lion defense this week, Hester could be targeted quite often. Owners needing a serviceable fill-in, can look at Hester as a possible option. His big play ability makes him a good bet to reach the end-zone.

"Diamond in the Rough"

Once again here are some "Hidden Jewels" that may have been overlooked when the season began or passed over as after thought, but are on the brink of making a little noise and could be on their way to fantasy relevance.

Your Week 5 Deep Sleepers...

Steve Smith-WR (NYG).....the Giants are without Plaxico Burress this week and with the Seahawks likely to show WR Amani Toomer more attention, players like Smith could find themselves getting open on Sunday. In week 3 prior to the bye, Eli hooked up with Smith 7 times, look for this trend to continue with Plax out of the line up. Fantasy owners might not be able to fill a pressing need here with Smith, but he's definitely worth watching. As teams try to double Burress and with Toomer slowing down, the Giants 2nd year receiver could emerge a reliable target for Manning down the stretch.

James Jones-WR (GB).....the Packers 2nd year receiver could make his return to the field this week after missing a couple of games with a knee injury. If healthy Jones could make an immediate impact as he did back in week two (4 receptions, including a touchdown), but with Rodgers slowed by a shoulder injury, fantasy owners would be advised not to move too quickly, unless you have the room on your roster.

"Lying in wait" under watchful eyes...

...these are those players through week 4, that are not still not considered serviceable options, but should be kept an eye on as their situations could suddenly change making them fantasy relevant and worthy of a spot on your roster!

Running Backs

Ryan Torain (Den)...I really didn't expect the Broncos to be needing help with the running game this season. It seemed when the season started they were loaded, but it clearly looks as if Shanahan has no confidence in his current corp of backs and the team could be counting the days for Torain's return. The Bronco's rookie runner has a similar style and build to a former Bronco running back (that has the initials T.D.) that Bronco fans adorned, and this similarity could be the right fit to get the ground game rolling as it once did. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the Denver backfield rotation. If we see no changes in the coming weeks as the Broncos near their bye, this could be the opportunity Torain will need to crack the line-up!

Wide Receivers

Kevin Curtis (Phi)....the Eagles receiver is not ready to return and it could be a few weeks before he does, but when Curtis is healthy and gets back out there, he will help any fantasy team. McNabb and Curtis developed great chemistry last season, and by the time Curtis is on the field and back to football speed it could be just in time for your fantasy championship run. If you have the roster space, now might be the time to snatch this speedster who is getting close to returning.

Drew Bennett (Stl)....this could be just a stretch, but with the rookie Donnie Avery now starting, by the time Bennett returns Avery's presence could help open things up in the passing game. Bennett is a big (6'5") sure-handed receiver when healthy. If he can get back on the field, with Avery in the slot, Bennett could see more single coverage against smaller corners. For owners in deep leagues needing help, a situation to keep your eye on for a while.

2008 WEEKLY ROOKIE REPORT CARD

FSH: THE ROOKIE REPORT CARD
October 4th, 2008 1:55pm PST

THE WEEKLY ROOKIE REPORT CARD

Last week we saw a few shifts in the balance for "the Rookie of the Year" race. As we have completed the first quarter of NFL action this season, we can see which rising stars continue to glow, while others start to fizzle, and a few that can hardly generate a spark. Most rookies are not expected to make a huge fantasy impact, but as we grade these youngsters being thrown to the wolves, we can sort through the Studs, duds, and "hey, where did he come from?"

Based on traditional standard scoring rules applied to the numbers from week 4. Here are the kids in the NFL!

The grading scale: (A-being a weekly starter and F-being "why did I pick-up this guy?").

(Week 4) The Kids of America...

1. RB-Matt Forte (Overall grade A- / 3.775)
The Bears rookie runner was kept under wraps for most of Sunday night against a very active and aggressive Eagle defense. Forte finished the evening with only 43 yards rushing, but he did add 5 catches for another 42 yards from scrimmage. (8-FPTs)
Grade This Week: C+

2. RB-Chris Johnson (Overall grade A- / 3.650 gpa)
The Titans rookie didn't have the biggest day running, but he did have one of his most productive days on the gridiron. In week 4, Chris Johnson rushed for 61 yards and scored twice. Johnson also added 3 catches for 14 yards. (19-FPTs)
Grade This Week: A+

3. RB-Steve Slaton (Overall grade B+ / 3.450 gpa)
The rookie running back of the Texans produced another stellar fantasy performance in week 4. Against the Jaguars tough run defense, Slaton couldn't find much room to roam, but he was able to break free of the backfield to haul in 8 passes for 83 yards including a 30 yard score. (17-FPTs)
Grade This Week: A+

4. RB-Jonathan Stewart (Overall grade B / 3.125 gpa)
The Panthers rookie running back continued to make himself fantasy relevant posting solid fantasy numbers for week 4. Stewart carried the ball 14 times for 52 yards and scored once. (11-FPTs)
Grade This Week: C+

5. WR-DeSean Jackson (Overall grade B- / 2.975 gpa)
The Eagles rookie receiver came to life in week 4 and bounce back with a very strong fantasy performance for owners riding his coat-tails. Against the Bears defense Sunday night, Jackson caught 5 passes for 71 yards and a score, but also added 2 carries for another 35 yards from scrimmage. He's not only producing well in traditional leagues as a very good WR2, but Jackson is also scoring well in PPR leagues. (16-FPTs)
Grade This Week: A

6. WR-Eddie Royal (Overall grade B- / 2.875 gpa)
The Broncos rookie receiver continues to be a playmaker turning in a solid performance last week against the Chiefs. Royal caught 9 more passes for 104 yards. For the season Royal has 27 receptions for 298 yards with 2 touchdowns. (10-FPTs)
Grade This Week: B

7. QB-Matt Ryan (Overall grade B- / 2.700 gpa)
The Falcons rookie quarterback is making his way through the bigs, taking his lumps along the way. Last week against the Panthers Ryan had a very average day passing, throwing for only 158 yards with no touchdowns. (6-FPTs)
Grade This Week: C

8. RB-Darren McFadden (Overall grade C / 2.250 gpa)
The Raiders rookie continues his battle with turf toe, only recording 7 carries in week 4 against the Chargers. McFadden has been up and down, and last week he was down finishing with 20 yards rushing and 17 yards receiving. (3-FPTs)
Grade This Week: D-

9. QB-Joe Flacco (Overall grade C / 2.250 gpa)
The Ravens rookie passer, continues to take his lumps and move forward each week. With OC Cam Cameron opening up the playbook a bit Flacco was able to make a few more throws downfield. Against a tough Steeler defense the results were not great. Flacco did complete 16 of 31 for 192 yards and a touchdown, but also had two fumbles. (9-FPTs)
Grade This Week: B-

10. RB-Tim Hightower (Overall grade C / 2.200 gpa)
It wasn't the breakout game some fantasy owners were looking for, but the rookie was in the mix and produced another productive game. Against the Jets, Hightower carried the ball 6 for only 13 yards, but he did get in the end-zone. (7-FPTs)
Grade This Week: C

11. WR-Donnie Avery (Overall grade C / 2.000 gpa)
The Rams rookie receiver made a bit of a splash last Sunday in his first start. He only caught 3 passes for 22 yards, but the rookie showed great speed turning in a beautiful 37 yard run for his first career touchdown. (11-FPTs)
Grade This Week: F

12. RB-Kevin Smith (Overall grade D+ / 1.700 gpa)
The Lions rookie did not suit up last week, as the team enjoyed it's the bye week, but it's likely he may see more rest this week being bumped out of the starting line-up in favor of the veteran RB Rudi Johnson.
Grade This Week: no grade

13. RB-Felix Jones (Overall grade D+ / 1.650 gpa)
The Cowboys offense fell behind early in their showdown with the Redskins in week 4 and the team simply abandoned the run. As a result, the Cowboys rookie runner saw little action and did not get into the box score. (no points)
Grade This Week: F

14. TE-Dustin Keller (Overall grade D+ / 1.575 gpa)
The Jets rookie tight end has been coming to life with each passing week, scoring a touchdown in past two games. Last week Keller had one grab for 24 yards and a score. (8-FPTs)
Grade This Week: no grade

15. WR-Jordy Nelson (Overall grade D+ / 1.500 gpa)
The Packers rookie receiver was active in week 4, but his contributions will likely remain modest from week to week as he develops a better rapport with Rodgers. Last week Nelson grabbed 4 passes for 31 yards. (3-FPTs)
Grade This Week: D-

16. TE-John Carlson (Overall grade D+ / 1.500 gpa)
The Seahawks rookie enjoyed the bye week, but will be in action this week to face the defending Superbowl champion New York Giants.
Grade This Week: no grade

17. WR-Michael Bumpus (Overall grade D / 1.250 gpa)
The Seahawks receiver did not see any action in week 4 with the bye and it could be another uneventful week for the kid with the return of Branch and Engram.
Grade This Week: no grade

18. RB-Kregg Lumpkin (Overall grade D- / .850 gpa)
In week 4 the Packers rookie runner did not get his name in the box score. The Packers had little success on the ground and fell behind in the first half, having to lean more on the passing game in the second half. (no points)
Grade This Week: no grade

19. RB-Ray Rice (Overall grade D- / .850 gpa)
With the return of McGahee and RB LeRon McClain plowing through defenses, Rice has seen his production drop as his role has decreased significantly (1 carry in week 4). It will be more of the same each week, as long as McGahee and McClain remain healthy. (no points)
Grade This Week: F

20. RB-Jamaal Charles (Overall grade F / 0.500 gpa)
The Chiefs speedy rookie runner, could find himself playing more of the waiting game if LJ continues his high level of play. In week 4 Charles finished the day with just 2 carries for 7 yards and 2 catches for 1 yard. (no points)
Grade This Week: F

21. RB-Rashard Mendenhall (Overall grade F / 0.450 gpa)
The Steelers rookie running back's career as a starter came to a screaming halt on Monday night, when Mendenhall was knocked out of the game with a shoulder fracture. The rookie finished with just 9 carries for 30 yards rushing and a single catch for 6 yards. (3-FPTs)
Grade This Week: D-

22. WR-Harry Douglas (Overall grade F / 0.250 gpa)
Only two catches and 8 yards for the Falcons rookie wide receiver in week 4. It is apparent that QB Matt Ryan has developed a very good rapport with his number one wide out Roddy White. Douglas has yet to gain his QBs' trust and it could take some time before he becomes fantasy relevant. (0-FPTs)
Grade This Week: F

23. WR-James Hardy (Overall grade F / 0.167 gpa)
The Bills rookie receiver was held without a catch in week 4 and for the season his two catches for 12 yards make him non-existent in the fantasy world. (no points)
Grade This Week: F

24. TE-Martellus Bennett (Overall grade F / 0.150 gpa)
The Cowboys have too many weapons on offense and Bennett will frequently find himself last man on the list to be targeted. In week 4 Bennett had only 1 catch for no yards, a familiar stat line he will likely see more of for a while. (no points)
Grade This Week: F

25. WR-Josh Morgan (Overall grade F / 0.000 gpa)
The Niners rookie was again quiet in week 4 recording only one catch for 10 yards. For the season, the rookie receiver has been a disappointment collecting only 3 catches for 36 yards. (1-FPTs)
Grade This Week: F

Newest Classmates making fantasy noise...

-The Browns rookie WR Syndric Steptoe, has seen limited action this season catching 7 passes for 58 yards. With receiver Donte Stallworth still sidelined Steptoe could see an increased role in the offense.
-
The Chargers RB Mike Tolbert will likely not see a lot of action at any point this season, but when he does, he's making lots of noise. The Chargers rookie has caught 10 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown.
-
While he's not expected to make much noise, the Packers rookie QB Matt Flynn could be inserted as the team's starter this week with Aaron Rodgers ailing.

These are my grades for the week, check back next week, when I will update The Rookie Report Card!

NFL WEEKLY ROUND-UP (WEEK 5)

FSH: NFL WEEKLY ROUND-UP (Wk 5)
October 3rd, 2008 10:17pm PST

NFL NEWS...
FRIDAY'S HEADLINES

-Branch to start week 5...according to reports coming out of the Seahawks camp, it apprears wide receiver Deion Branch will make his first start of the 2008 NFL season. Branch is coming back from an ACL injury that cut his season short last year.
-Packers defense banged up...the Packers could be without several key starters on defense this week when they face the Atlanta Faclons. CB Al Harris is out and safety Atari Bigby is not likely to suit up. LB AJ Hawk and safety Aaron Rouse are both questionable, while dinged up CB Charles Woodson looks like he could go.
-Green expected to return...the Texans running back Ahman Green looks set to return to action this week, but even if Green does play the rookie RB Steve Slaton is slated to remain the starter. Slator has totaled more than 100 yards of offense in each of the last two weeks.
-Curtis not likely to play...reports are that the Eagles explosive receiver Kevin Curtis is still not ready to make his return. Curtis has been sidelined for several weeks recovering from sports hernia surgery. It looks like fantasy owners will have to keep waiting for Curtis' return to the line-up.

-Lions looking to open things up...the word heading into this weekend's games is that Lions OC Jim Colletto believes the offense needs to produce points faster. Colletto believes the Lions can use more 4 receiver sets to change things up and jump start the Lions attack.

-Ravens tight end is M.I.A...the Baltimore Sun is reporting the Ravens TE Todd Heap has been playing "soft" according to his coaches for not playing through a calf injury suffered during the preseason. So far this season he's only caught 3 passes and it appears the team is using Heap more as a blocker to toughen him up.

-Galloway will sit in week 5...the Buccaneers receiver continues to struggle with his foot injury missing another practice on Friday. Gallaoway has been ruled out for Sunday and WR Antonio Bryant will get the start.

NOISE-SHAKERS! PLAY-MAKERS! GAME-BREAKERS!

Palmer's elbow could keep him sidelined...
...when the week started quarterback Carson Palmer vowed he would return this Sunday to play against the Cowboys, but the way we are hearing it this could be no more than wishful thinking. The Bengal's quarterback has only participated in practice this week on a limited basis with some light throwing, but the elbow continues to be sore, leaving Palmer a big question mark for week 5. Even should Palmer suit up and start, fantasy owners would be wise to look to other possible options, as he would be a huge risk just to finish the game against the Cowboys pass rush that has recorded 12 sacks on the season (tied for 6th in the NFL).

Branch and Engram set to return...
...reports coming out of the Northwest are indicating that the sun could finally be shinning (even just a little) on the Seahawks, as they are getting healthy. During the bye week, both receivers Deion Branch and Bobby Engram returned to full practice and the word this week is Engram looks like his old self and will return to his natural position in the Slot. What we are also hearing is that Branch is "looking explosive" and showing an extra gear making big grabs on long passes from quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. While Branch has already be inserted as the starting flanker, fantasy owners may want to look at alternative options before taking a chance on Branch or Engram.

The latest on Boldin...
...although it was a scary moment and the result of the vicious hit he took left him with a fractured sinus, the Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin merely calls this "just a part of football." The Cards wide out seems okay and in good spirits, saying he has no intention of changing his playing style, but for the moment his status remains in the air. It appears fantasy owners will have to wait until Friday's practice reports to find out if Boldin will be able to give it a go. This sounds like one of those game-time decision situations, but I would bet if Boldin does not practice Friday, he does not play Sunday.

Taylor not likely to play this week...
...According to the Washington Times, don't expect to see defensive end Jason Taylor on Sunday when the Redskins meet the Eagles at Philadelphia. Taylor did not practice on Thursday at the doctor's request. While the healing process on the Taylor's calf is coming along "a little bit ahead of schedule" the stitches will remain in the leg for another couple of weeks. Fantasy owners holding Taylor in IDP leagues will likely have to keep Taylor on their bench for a couple of more weeks and rely on other options.

Chad Johnson lets the "Cat out of the Bag"......
...Well, being a fan of football and enjoying some good ole smack every now and then, and usually more now, I have to say it's about time! You see in Dallas, TO's antics are just plain distracting and detrimental. They lack that certain entertainment value and go straight to drama. While in Cincy, Ocho Cinco's antics have nothing but pure Emmy stapled on it. The Bengal's outspoken receiver finally broke his moratorium and announced he's letting the "Cat out of the bag" and gonna do his thing. So he's talking to anyone who's listening. Some folks may frown, but CJ, I mean Ocho, I mean Chad, or whatever his name will be this Sunday, has that charismatic personality that just gets you grinning. The Bengal's offense has lacked spark and personality, and for fantasy owners it's time to try something to shake the rust and get these boys doing what they do!

Vince Young returns to practice....
...the Titans quarterback Vince Young has returned to practice and according to the Tennessean, he fully participated Thursday. It was the first time in a month. Young took some reps with the first team and HC Jeff Fischer was noted as saying he was pleased. However, for fantasy owners, likely in deeper leagues it looks like Young will remain in a reserve role as the team's number 2 or 3 quarterback playing behind starter Kerry Collins.

Rodgers taking it easy...
...the Packers field general was at practice in the morning on Thursday, but he wasn't in pads and didn't participate according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. In Head Coach Mike McCarthy's press conference following morning practice, he elaborated more on the status of Rodgers indicating that the Packer's QB has not come along as fast as they would like. Rodgers rehab is improving by the amount of intensity, but it doesn't sound like he is progressing fast enough to play this weekend. Although Rodgers sounds optimistic to play this Sunday, fantasy owners should proceed with caution. If you have options, you may want to look that direction, a Rodgers less than 100% could be a very risky play.

Westbrook still a question mark for Sunday...
...the Eagles starting running back Brian Westbrook took part in practice Thursday, but the peculiar part was what he did or I should say didn't do. The only thing we know he did was go through a walk-thru and the Eagle's star wasn't sharing anymore information. "Hey guys, I'm not talking right now," Westbrook replied when asked about practice. There are reports circulating that his brother (a cornerback with Washington) Byron let it out to the Washington post he would be surprised if Brian played Sunday. Thank goodness for siblings. Fantasy owners will have to watch this one closely and be prepared for another game-time decision.

Colts to play without Sanders...
...already sidelined with a sprained right ankle, the Colts safety opted to have arthroscopic knee surgery on a knee. The ankle injury is expected to take longer to heel than the knee, which is why Sanders chose to have the procedure. The bad news for the Colts defense is the extended time period that they will miss Sanders. The good news for fantasy owners, keep watch for this matchup, your RB1 versus the Colts run defense ranked 31st in the NFL.

THE FANTASY E.R.

Week Four Surprises & "Eyebrow Raisers"

What was week 4, was certainly something to remember. It was a week where we watched two of the near 40 club quarterbacks, gunslinging like a couple of twenty-something's, putting up impressive fantasy numbers that every owner could get excited about. NFL fans saw a legend take the field on Sunday in week 4 and with smiles on all of our faces from ear to ear, we watched his legend grow and grow with each touchdown pass to the tune of six! It was a week of throwback, watching an LJ in one game and an LT in another score touchdowns for their teams as they did in 06. Impressive as they were on Sunday in week 4, for most fantasy owners this was what we had come to expect (okay, maybe not 6 touchdowns, but I only say maybe) and more importantly was why we drafted these gridiron warriors!

So let's take a look at those that were the surprise performances, fantasy owners may not have expected, but may have benefited from. Here are some of the not-quite-ready for "Prime-Time Fantasy Players" raising more eyebrows in week 4.

WR-MUHSIN MUHAMMAD (CAR)
The Panther's senior citizen of the receiving corp showed all the young pups, that old dogs still have a few tricks left. On Sunday in week 4 against the Falcons, Muhammad had his best game of the season and a dominant fantasy performance for a WR2, catching 8 passes for 147 yards with a touchdown! (20-FPTs)

RB-DEUCE MCALLISTER (NO)
Perhaps the one player who raised the most eyebrows on Sunday, not just for his performance, but his return to the team's starting lineup in week 4. Deuce McAllister's return was inspiring in itself, but his contributions Sunday had so much more to say. McAllister carried the ball 20 times for 73 yards on the ground and scored once. He also added a reception for 10 yards (14-FPTs). Fantasy owners better keep your eyes open, because Pierre is out and the Deuce is back!

RB-STEVE SLATON (HOU)
For the second consecutive week the Texans rookie running back surprised fantasy owners with a solid performance against a tough defense (and this week on the road). Slaton did not see too many holes on Sunday rushing for only 33 yards, but where he did do his damage was in the passing game. The rookie caught 8 passes for 83 yards and scored on a 30 yards pass (17-FPTs). Slaton's team-mate WR Kevin Walter was also a big surprise on Sunday, doing his damage in the passing game; Walter pulled in 8 passes for 76 yards and scored two touchdowns (19-FPTs) on Sunday

QB-MATT SCHAUB (HOU)
Following a week filled with much criticism and skepticism from just about every analysts on the web with an opinion, even the local janitors were doubting Schaub's ability and whether he was the right guy. In week 4, Schaub may not have silenced the crowd, but he definitely lowered their roar with a solid afternoon of passing. Schaub completed 29 of 40 passes for 307 yards and tossed 3 touchdowns raising the eyebrows of many fantasy owners that may have listened to some of those critics and sat him this past Sunday.

RB-LERON MCCLAIN (BAL)
The Ravens big 260 pound running back or full-back, or how about we just call him a monster, LeRon McClain continues to raise eyebrows and open eyes! Many experts and analysts alike were not quite sure where this big guy fit in, but it's starting to look like his running style fits in perfectly with the personality and attitude of this team. McClain has solidified his role in the running game with performances like that in week 4, 16 carries for 63 yards and a score (14-FPTs). Another Raven playing with a tough nose attitude and surprising fantasy owners with his production is WR Derrick Mason. The aged veteran receiver is running with legs younger than his player profile indicates and his 8 receptions for 137 yards (13-FPTs) on Monday night against a tough Steeler defense were a big surprise for owners!

TE-ZACH MILLER (OAK)
The Oakland Raiders have not had too many players making many fantasy headlines, but in week 4 not only did tight end Zach Miller turn in a TE1 fantasy worthy performance with 5 catches for 95 yards and a score (15-FPTs), but his QB Jamarcus Russell was also noteworthy. JR passed for 277 yards completing 22 of 37 passes and throwing one touchdown (15-FPTs).

QB-KYLE ORTON (CHI)
It is not often that you will hear any fantasy prognosticator or analyst offer any opinion about a Chicago's Bears quarterback, since the Rex Grossman debacle. But with a new sheriff in town, quarterback Kyle Orton is doing his very best to restore the reputation of the Bear's Field General position. In week 4 against a very stout Eagles pass defense, Orton did make some mistakes and a couple of bad throws, but for most of the night, the Bears quarterback resembled more a poised pocket presence than a punch line to a good water cooler joke. Orton completed 18 of 34 passes for 199 yards and threw three touchdowns (21-FPTs). A more productive night than most fantasy owners could imagine from the former Boilermaker.

More notable surprises from some fantasy "Diamonds in the rough"

-The Ravens rookie QB Joe Flacco couldn't nail the down his third straight win this season Monday night, although he came close, he did have a productive night for fantasy owners completing 16 of 31 for 192 yards with a touchdown. (13-FPTs)

-In a replacement role, the Eagles back up RB Correll Buckhalter filled in nicely for the injured Brian Westbrook. Sunday night against the Bears, the Eagle's runner did not disappoint fantasy owners that scampered to the waiver wire this week, posting 66 yards rushing with a touchdown and adding 24 receiving yards. (14-FPTs)

-The Saints WR Lance Moore did his best impersonation of Marques Colston on Sunday against the Niners. Moore grabbed 7 passes for 101 yards receiving with two touchdowns! (22-FPTs)

-The Saints other receiver that continues to mentioned each week as a strong sleeper, finally awoke in week 4 against the Niners. WR Robert Meachem turned in a solid fantasy performance with 2 catches for 99 yards and a score. (15-FPTs)

-Perhaps the biggest surprise about QB Jason Campbell's performance was not so much what he did, but more where he did it and to who. In week 4 on the road against the division rival Dallas Cowboys, Campbell was precise, accurate, and efficient completing 20 of 31 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns! (21-FPTs)

-Surprise, surprise, another Raider makes the fantasy news wire. It seems although the Raiders are rarely thought of as has much fantasy talent, it does look like they are loaded with talent at the running back position. In week 4, RB Michael Bush turned in a solid performance with 48 rushing yards and 80 receiving yards. His 8 receptions also made his a strong play in PPR leagues. (12-FPTs)

The Complete list of Week 4 Surprises.....

  • WR Justin Gage (Ten) caught 5 passes for 95 yards. (9-FPTs)
  • TE Greg Olsen (Chi) caught 4 passes for 35 yards and a TD. (9-FPTs)
  • WR Matt Jones (Jax) caught 5 passes for 71 yards and a TD. (13-FPTs)
  • WR Donnie Avery (Stl) caught 3 passes for 22 yards, had one rush for 37 yards and a TD. (11-FPTs)
  • WR Steve Breaston (Ari) caught 9 passes for 121 yards. (12-FPTs)
  • RB Fred Jackson (Buf) rushed for 46 yards and a TD. (10-FPTs)
  • RB Warrick Dunn (TB) rushed for 63 yards and caught 2 passes for 23 yards. (8-FPTs)
  • WR Devin Hester (Chi) caught 3 passes for 27 yards with a TD. (8-FPTs)
  • WR Austin Miles (Dal) caught 3 passes 45 yards and a TD. (10-FPTs)
  • WR Patrick Crayton (Dal) caught 7 passes for 87 yards. (8-FPTs)
  • WR Arnaz Battle (SF) caught 7 passes for 120 yards. (12-FPTs)

**noted scoring based on standard rules.

NOISE-SHAKERS! PLAY-MAKERS! GAME-BREAKERS!

Bulger re-named starter for rest of season...
...such a confusing situation in St.Louis. One week he's the starter, next he's benched, then he won't play for the coach, now he's the starter again. So confusing, but I do believe the new Head Coach Jim Haslett will bring stability and order. Already as the new HC, Haslett has named Bulger his starter for the rest of the season. Sounds like a soap opera that could have a good storyline, and the move to bring Bulger back was a good move by the script writers. Even with Steven Jackson having his best game of the season, quarterback Trent Green looked average at best. Clearly the Rams still have concerns along the line that will be addressed, but Bulger is the better talent and will make this team more competitive. With "Action" Jackson coming to life and the defense starting to show some life (3 sacks last week), Bulger should be a more productive high QB2 to low QB1 as we move towards the mid-point of the season!

Boldin Status uncertain for week
...as more reports came back, the prognosis of the Boldin's soon return to the field look good. There's no question the hit he took on Sunday against the Jets was vicious and no one would expect any player to return any time soon after suffering such. According to sources with the team, Boldin was alert on the field and wanted to get up on his own, but team staff told him no. All tests performed following the injury came back negative and it appears the only serious injury is a sinus fracture. His status is uncertain and it is not clear if he'll play this Sunday. According to HC Ken Whisenhunt, the team will wait until Boldin is cleared medically before making any determination. If you own Boldin, time to hit the WW and find your replacement. Hint, hint, look no further than the Cardinals!

Kiffin out in Oakland...

...well it came as no surprise, rather more like a "finally." Probably the only surprise was the long-winded pres conference held by team owner Al Davis himself. It's hard to contest anything that Davis had to say, when offering his reason for Kiffin's release, but my question would have been, why did this take so long. If you've heard the excerpts from the press conference, you could only come away thinking, "what a dysfunctional situation." Davis called Kiffin, "the wrong guy." Did it really take this long, four weeks into the regular season to come to that conclusion. The sad part of this story is the 1-3 Raiders, who could easily be 3-1. It was probably a situation that could not continue, but if this team was on the verge of turning any corners, this drastic change could easily set them back. Fantasy owners should pay attention to how this team moves forward and play any Raider players with caution.

Steelers sign RB Najeh Davenport...
...with Willie Parker already expected to be sidelined in week 5, with rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall now on the injured reserves the Steelers have announced the signing of RB Najeh Davenport. While Davenport is very familiar with the system and could see immediate short-yardage and goal-line action in week 5, fantasy owners probably should eye this situation as an opportunity to grab an ideal ball-hawk (touchdown vulture). The Steelers will likely elevate RB Mewelde in the starting role and according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he would become the team's "feature back" for the short term. With the teams bye coming up in week 6, the word is Parker will be ready to return in week 7. For the short term and long term, Davenport has little value if any for fantasy owners.

Henry returns to Cincy...
...well isn't it ironic that the one guy this team cast aside during the off-season, could very well be the spark plug this aerial attack needs to get a soaring again. Chris Henry has often found himself in the midst of controversies surrounding his off-the-field actions, but when was the last time he was looked at as a possible savior? Okay, savior could be quite a stretch, okay a long stretch, but entering the 2008 season the Cincinnati Bengals boasted one of the leagues top 10 (in some circles, top 5) passers and two of its elite pass catchers. To see this team ranked any lower than a top 8 passing offense, was never conceived. Now four games into the season, the Bengal's QB Carson Palmer has struggled and both wide outs have made little impact in the fantasy world. Henry is currently on the reserve/suspended list and it won't be determined until later this week by HC Marvin Lewis is he will be activated. Henry was not Marvin's decision to rejoin the team, so he doesn't appear to be a fan, but at 0-4 desperate times call for desperate measure. Fantasy owners will have to wait and see, but I'd bet we see number 15 (don't know the Spanish lingo here) on the field Sunday against the Cowboys.

"Rudi's on duty" in Detroit now....
...According to the Detroit Free Press the Lions have made the announcement that Rudi Johnson will be their starter for week 5. Considering how Johnson played in week 3, this move came in as no surprise. Head Coach Rod Marinelli had stated following the game that he felt Johnson was running hard and getting it going. The puzzling thing is the rookie RB Kevin Smith had only 3 carries, but did have 14 yards (4.6 yds/carry), before Marinelli sent him to the bench in week 3. It looks like the team was just waiting for Johnson to get his legs back to football shape. Fantasy owners should note, while this announcement comes as a week 5 start, this move is likely more for the long haul of the season. Rookie Kevin Smith is certainly not dispensable, but if you're hoping for reliable weekly contributions from him, look elsewhere. Rudi should be a serviceable flex option only in the coming weeks with matchups against the Bears and Vikings.

Rams lose McMichael for 6 weeks...
...the Rams tight end went down twice in the team's week 4 game against the Bills before leaving finally leaving with a broken tibia or shin bone. The expected time missed for a broken tibia is six-weeks, but HC Jim Haslett indicated that McMichael has a couple of other things that could extend the time he could miss. Haslett said Tuesday the team is considering placing McMichael on the Injured Reserve. This is typical of McMichael for fantasy owners. While it is unfortunate that the tight end has suffered an injury, it comes as no surprise. Last season McMichael was a bust with only 39 receptions and three touchdowns for the season. The thought was heading into the 2008 season, that with the return of Al Saunders to the Rams, McMichael could be one of fantasy football's best sleepers. It looks like instead, he has put fantasy owners to sleep for another season!

McGahee uncertain for Sunday with rib injury...
...certainly the injury to RB Willis McGahee (ribs) has to be a concern to the Ravens coaching staff, but for fantasy owners who followed McGahee's story heading into the 2008 season this may not be. If you were on the McGahee watch as the season approached, you may have be eyeing the Ravens backfield and made a move for rookie RB Ray Rice and RB LeRon McClain (after week 1). If McGahee can not go this week, McClain would be the odds-on favorite to start against the Titans. While his matchup doesn't look appealing I would not count the 260 pounder from being an effective and reliable RB3 or flex option for week 5.
