Updating an earlier entry, Reggie Bush was limping on Thursday due to a strained calf, according to Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times Picayune.

My Fantasy Reads and Quick Takes…

D-Jax picked up right where he left off last season with a big night against the Colts. Jackson is going to be part of the receiving committee in Philly, but clearly he is the most fantasy worthy…..

With Peyton brining his “A” game, Reggie Wayne is poised to have a huge 2009, in the post Manning-to-Harrison Era. Expect Reggie to be another high fantasy pick this summer…..

The older Manning is already looking sharp this preseason. He is still considered an elite quarterback and should go early in fantasy drafts….

Donovan McNabb looks very crisp this preseason and Thursday night he was on display. Despite the improved look on offense, McNabb will still be considered part of that second tier of quarterback and should be available in those early mid-rounds….

Fantasy gamers pay no attention to the ADP for Chris Henry. This kid is a beast and looks great this preseason. With Carson apparently healthy, Henry will be a huge fantasy sleeper in 2009. Remember as the team’s number three receiver in 2006 Henry caught nine touchdowns with Palmer under center….

Note to fantasy owners; with the Bills no-huddle offense in place, Terrell Owens fantasy stock could be on the rise. Edwards will be calling the signals with the no-huddle and Owens figures to be his best option, if he can hang on to balls this year…..

With Reggie Bush ailing again with another leg injury, the explosive Saints running back figures to be a high risk fantasy option and should be drafted with caution….

FSH: TUESDAY (FOOTBALL) TALK

August 18th, 2009 9:37pm PST

[Wednesday Edition]

Favre is Back!!!

Did he ever really leave?
Well it has finally happened. Whether you were anxiously waiting to hear this story break and just praying this whole made-for-television daytime drama would finally go away, the day has come and gone and yes folks, Brett Favre is back.

Sure there was a lot of grandstanding and drama, but what else would you be doing during the offseason, mowing the lawn? So Brett was a little indecisive and had us all guessing while he toyed with the idea; something many of suspected all along. It just made sense and don’t think the two-years was an accident.

On Tuesday in Minnesota, Brett Favre inked a two-year deal with the team worth upward toward $25 million. No only did Favre sign, but he was able to join his new teammates for an afternoon practice. There seem to be plenty of signs indicating that Mr. Favre could play as early as this Friday in the Vikings next preseason game.

Just days ago football folks were breaking down the play of then starting quarterback Sage Rosenfels and discussing his chances of starting. Now that Brett is in town and signed, what will all this mean to not only Rosenfels, but backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson?

At the high price tag that the team has inked Favre, there is no question that he was not brought in to hold a clip board and coach from the sideline. The Vikings have done their homework and with Favre’s injury behind him, he’ll bring veteran savvy and experience to an offense that features the leagues best runner and great potential otherwise. Favre is the Viking’s new starting quarterback and the hefty investment has to be an indicator that someone in Minnesota believes he can still play the game at a high level.

The Favre Affect:

So Favre is a Viking now what?

Now that we have crossed that bridge and come to terms with what has been brewing all along, its time to talk about what it all means. With Favre under center, Rosenfels becomes virtually irrelevant other than a handcuff or insurance for the soon to be 40-year-old golden boy. If you do draft Favre, he had better not be your number one quarterback, at his age coming off an arm injury he’s a high risk even at your number two.

Brett’s immediate impact will not have great affect on his value, but he suddenly brings great creditability to a passing offense that wasn’t expected to provide too many fantasy options.

Without the Favre, you are only looking at Berrian and Shiancoe as possible fantasy receivers. Harvin could be a consideration, but more in leagues that reward special teams yardage and touchdowns. With Favre, it’s a whole new ball game; not only do you include Harvin, but you must include the Sydney Rice and Bobby Wade.

Harvin is expected to make a splash this season as an all-around option that will include special teams. With Favre’s arm strength coupled with Harvin’s speed, he could be a sneaky sleeper as a touchdown maker. Wade, who led the team in receptions a year ago should once again see a lot of action in the slot and could flourish with Favre calling the signals.

Rice has a great chance to have a big year. Just as in Green Bay, Rice and Berrian give Brett two explosive targets on the outside. At his size with Favre’s gun, that in recent reports has lost very little zip, Rice is going to be an easy target for the gunslinger to find.

Take note: my pick, Rice could be another fine sleeper for 2009.

Looking deeper into the Favre affect in Minnesota, with four quarterbacks currently in camp one must go. There has been some talk and speculation that Favre’s arrival could mean the departure of Tarvaris Jackson. It would make sense from the Vikings perspective, with Rosenfels under contract he makes a very serviceable experienced back-up and gives the team flexibility to move Jackson who still has market value.

The kid, John David Booty fills the number three spot as the potential arm of the future that can be brought along slowly; remember Favre signed for two years and Rosenfels signed a multi-year deal as well.

There’s no question that Favre’s arrival comes with no guarantees, but from an outsiders view, you have to think if it is what it appears to be, the Vikings have definitely improved their chances this season. This won’t be the 1998 Vikings offense, but with Peterson in the backfield and Favre under center, this could be the best this team has seen since.

Last season the Vikings passing game passed for 3,217-yards and threw 22 touchdowns, conceivably very achievable numbers for Brett to match this season. The big difference with Brett throwing for these kinds of modest fantasy numbers, his presence should keep defenses honest and make Peterson possibly better. Can you imagine?

Certainly a lot of questions will follow the 19-year veteran throughout training camp and well into season, but if you’ve been reading or watching the recent happenings from the Vikings camp, players and coaches seem to like what they are seeing and from a fantasy perspective, we are liking what we are hearing.

Welcome back Brett!

My Fantasy Read….

The Charger’s playmaking linebacker is coming off injury and playing in a contract year, expect “Lights-out” to go all out and be a terror on the field. He could have a huge impact season in 2009 and should be drafted high…..

The Bill’s top rookie pick Aaron Maybin is quickly turning into a fantasy bust for 2009. Unless Maybin finds his way back on the field soon, it’s hard to imagine him making any kind of impact anytime soon this season. It’s likely best to avoid the rookie in fantasy drafts……

With Jermaine Phillips moving back to his normal position, at least for the first four games, his fantasy stock will be on the rise. Playing safety collecting tackles, Phillips is a decent option as a mid-level defensive back……

The bad news surrounding the Colts defensive back Bob Sanders (knee) will also less of an impact in IDP leagues than it will in leagues that employ team defense. Sanders is the anchor for the Colts defense, his absence will be felt…….

Despite all the time missed, the Niner’s linebacker Patrick Willis is a stud IDP’er and should be ready to go for week one. Fantasy owners draft away……

Defensive lineman Robert Mathis is slated to start this season for the Colts, but although he may see a few extra snaps this season, he’ll likely be a part of a regular rotation. His fantasy value will increase some, but not a great deal. Draft accordingly….

The Raider’s linebacker Kirk Morrison is still expected to be the man in the middle on defense. Last season the Raider’s middle linebacker was among the leaders in tackles and should be solid once again……

FSH: ON THE COVER

August 17th, 2009 9:00pm PST

This Week on the Cover….

The Baddest Man in the NFL!

It’s time to get Nasty
Fantasy has normally been all about the “O”, but in these days and times the fashionable trend has been to play in leagues that employ IDPs. The individual defensive player has become common place in fantasy and in this week’s edition it time to talk about the bad boys of the NFL.

So who is the “Baddest Man” in the NFL?

Last season there were several candidates that threw their hat in the ring with player like; Joey Porter (17.5-sacks), John Abraham (16.5-sacks), D’Qwell Jackson (154-tackles), and DeMarcus Ware (20-sacks). While these bad boys got dirty and made the big plays on the defense that their teams needed to be successful, there was one player that stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Last season, there was no one as bad or nasty as the Steeler’s linebacker James Harrison (voted the AP Defensive Player of the Year). Harrison finished his 2008 campaign with a team high 16.5 sacks coupled with over 100 tackles. The defensive stalwart also led the league with seven forced fumbles and added an interception to boot.

With the 2009 Fantasy season dead ahead, it’s time to starting looking for your bad boys to fill your rosters. Harrison will likely top many boards, but other names to watch will include; Patrick Willis (SF), Jon Beason (Car), Barrett Ruud (TB), and DJ Williams (Den).

FSH: MONDAY MORNING HUDDLE

August 17th, 2009 10:37pm PST

[Tuesday Edition]

Fantasy Do’s and Don’ts

Draft Day Advice:
We have reached that time of the year, there’s a light breeze blowing from the south and across the horizon you can see the sun setting. With a faint sound of a whistle in the far off distant and children playing in the park, somewhere gathered around your average dinning room table are a group of men coming together in a battle of wits to test their own knowledge and mortality.

Not many outside this growing legion of fantasy football followers can fully grasp the extreme intensity that is involved when one participates in their annual fantasy draft. Like every year, the fantasy draft is more than an encounter; it’s an experience and a fight for survival. Always one of your biggest keys to enduring this marathon of football strategy, is know your “do’s and don’ts.”

2009 Do’s…..

If you are drafting in a quarterback friendly league, do take Tom Brady, Drew Brees, or Peyton manning with one of your top picks if they are available. Touchdowns don’t come cheap and these boys figure to put up many this season.

If you are playing in a PPR league you’re going to want to look at Matt Forte, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Steven Jackson with your top pick if Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner are gone and in some cases even before. All-Day and Turner are the best sure bets to see more than enough touches this fall to have huge impacts in fantasy, but the others compensate heavily with the abililties out of the backfield.

Drafting a top-notch wideout could prove to be tough this season if you are drafting low. Once the big-three (Moss-Fitzgerald-A.Johnson) have cleared the board, don’t turn your attention away from the receiver’s position. Do look to take Steve Smith (Carolina), Marques Colston (Saints), or Roddy White (Falcons). While the big three will be expected to turn in their big numbers once again, this second set will not be over-shadowed by much and will most definitely be worth heavy fantasy consideration.

Once your draft is well underway and you are looking at the tight end spot, aside from the standard play of Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, and Anontio Gates consider Chris Cooley, Dallas Clark, and Owen Daniels in similar company. There may be a slight drop off here from one tier to the next, but not enough to be a weekly difference maker.

2009 Don’ts....

If you are looking at the elite quarterbacks to draft, Philip Rivers and Kurt Warner may be worthy of some consideration following their impressive 2008 campaigns, but don’t count on quarterback Jay Cutler to fill the same shoes. A new team, a new system with new personnel does not necessarily equate to great numbers. He becomes a heavy risk with a high draft slot.

If you are looking to draft a good back in a touchdown friendly league, stay out of the Cleveland and Cincinnati backfields; only six touchdowns last season.

Need a great passing attack for your fantasy roster, but all the top arms are taken? Don’t expect to see miracles happen in Minnesota, Cleveland, or Oakland. The Vikings passing game could improve in 2009, but they tout one of the leagues best rushing attacks, with or without Favre they will run the ball. In Oakland and Cleveland, two of the leagues worst passing attacks should be avoided; they will not suddenly get healthy in 2009.

If you believe the Cardinal’s will produce a 1,000-yard rusher in 2009, don’t bet on it. Despite what head coach Ken Whisenhunt claims as far as running the ball, his Cards are built to throw the ball. Just ask former Dolphin’s head coach Don Shula, when quarterback Dan Marino came strolling along.

More Do’s & Don’ts….

Do draft…

Ryan Grant
Donald Brown
Steve Breaston
Brent Celek
Peyton Hillis
Chris Henry
Felix Jones
Jonathan Stewart
Derrick Ward
Earnest Graham
Ahmad Bradshaw
Nate Burleson
Kevin Curtis

Don’t draft….

Tarvaris Jackson
Daunte Culpepper
Brady Quinn
Derek Anderson
Ricky Williams
Michael Crabtree
Darius Heyward-Bey
Limas Sweed
Michael Jenkins
Antwaan Randle-El
Todd Heap or L.J. Smith
Dolphin’s receivers
Bear’s receivers
Raven’s receivers

Matthew Stafford, QB, Detroit Lions
According to the Detroit News, the Lions are going to have a tough time keeping rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford out of the starting lineup when the season begins. Stafford showed a level of calmness and poise in his first preseason outing, and he is scheduled to start the team's next preseason game against the Browns.

Brett Favre, QB, (No Team)
According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, there is a strong believe amongst the players at Vikings camp that Brett Favre will play for the team at some point this season.

My Fantasy Reads…

It’s never good news when your team and one of its’ top stars are at a stalemate, but it appears, WR Brandon Marshall and the Bronco’s are at odds again. The (net) sound bites we are currently reading indicate a holdout seems imminent…..

The Redskins running back Clinton Portis looks poised for a big year in 2009, if he can stay healthy. After his breakdown in the second half last season, his stock is going to be down come draft time and he may be undervalued. Fantasy owners would be wise to handcuff his backup Ladell Betts, but make no bones an injury-free Portis has the potential to be top-five back this season……

The Rams quarterback could be a heavy (long shot) sleeper possibility in 2009 and could very come dirt cheap. Even in quarterback leagues Bulger is a forgotten arm and coupled with his current injury, he’s likely to be avoided like the plague……

Westbrook returned to full practice with the team this week and even though he appears healthy he will still remain a fantasy risk. Westbrook has a history of injury, but his high production will make him a risky RB2 option…..

With Harrison gone, Gonzalez should become a more productive fantasy option, but look for Reggie Wayne to be the biggest fantasy beneficiary. He could be poised for a huge 2009 season…..

Berrian is not expected to miss any extended time, but hamstring injuries can be tricky. The Vikings leading receiver is a mid level RB3, but could move up the charts with more stable play or an upgrade at quarterback……

The Panther’s Steve Smith is a top flight fantasy receiver. The team is likely playing it safe by holding the All-pro receiver out, so owners should not be too concerned. Smith will be back out there and worthy of his high draft slot……

Footballguys.com Duo to Hit the Air to Fight Cystic Fibrosis

If you were to start with ESPN’s NFL Countdown on Sunday and watch to the end of the final game, you’d probably hit about 12 hours of football in a day. Now imagine talking fantasy throughout that span.

The Audible’s Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom will hit the air on BlogTalkRadio’s The Fantasy Sports Channel on Aug. 29 for just that length of time to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis.

The Footballguys.com duo will hit the air at noon Eastern that Saturday and go straight through until midnight with just 30-minute breaks every three hours. (For each of those intermissions, Andrew Garda of The Thundering Blurb will step in.)

The event is designed to draw attention to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and listeners will be able to make donations throughout the broadcast.

“We hope to raise awareness for CF, and we hope to raise quite a bit of money for this great charity,” Lammey told FSB.com. “There isn’t a better time of year than now to bring the fantasy football community together to support something as serious as Cystic Fibrosis.”

The Audible is among the most popular shows on The Fantasy Sports Channel and ranks among the top 90 audio podcasts on iTunes. In addition to fantasy talk from Lammey and Bloom, Lammey says the broadcast will include guest appearances by former Broncos guard and current ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth, ESPN.com NFL reporter Adam Schefter, Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole and Scout.com’s Adam Caplan, as well as other Footballguys.com staffers and some others.

The FSC put on a similar event to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation back on March 7, with Paul Greco and Lenny Melnick of FantasyPros911.com leading a 24-hour baseball-themed show.

FSB.com will pass along more info on the event, including the URL for donations, as it becomes available.

FSH: SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL NOTES

August 16th, 2009 10:57pm PST

Sunday Night Football Notes

Ahmad Bradshaw: No Wind Means More Fire

A nice compliment to Jacobs….
With fantasy drafts well under way, a name that could get lost and forgotten in the shuffle this preseason could the New York Giants new, but not so new back-up running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

For the past two seasons it has been the “Earth, Wind, and Fire” show in the Meadowlands, but the show has often lacked quite the same pyrotechnics that we may be accustomed to seeing in 2009. With a backfield that included Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Bradshaw, the Giants running game was at the top of the league in 2008 chewing up over 2,500-yards on the ground.

Often over-shadowed by his counter-parts (Jacobs & Ward), Bradshaw was easily the more unheralded contributor of the group. He did not grab all the spotlihg

The hidden gem in Bradshaw, who was limited to just 67 of the teams 502 carries, was his big-play ability. Last season Bradshaw broke off a long run for 77-yards and had over four carries of 20-yards or longer. His 1-out-of-every-16.75 ratio of long runs ranked higher than Adrian Peterson’s 1-out-of-every-18.15, DeAngelo William’s 1-out of every 18.2 carries, and Chris Johnson’s 1-out-of-every-27 carries.

With Derrick Ward signing with the Buccaneers in the offseason, the sometimes fragile Brandon Jacobs (8 games missed the last two seasons) is not likely to be expected to carry the load on his own. The vacancy of the number two spot is most likely going to be filled by Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw is a homerun hitter and would appear to be a great complimentary change-of-pace back-up option in the Giant’s backfield.

What to Expect….

As Jacob’s primary backup the last two seasons, Ward had collected 182 carries in 2008 and 125 attempts in a crowded 2007 backfield. With the health of the big-horse (Jacobs) always a concern, I wouldn’t expect to see the Giants increase his touches in 2009. Bradshaw has playmaking skills and gives the offense that big play threat defenses will need to be concerned about.

The Giants shifty back has shown in the past he can be a reliable ground gainer. In Week 16 of 2007 against the Bills, Bradshaw finished the game with 17 carries for 151-yards and a score. He was also very pivotal in the postseason during the team’s championship run and win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The Fantasy prognosis for Bradshaw in 2009 looks very good. In a system that supports a heavy run game (502 attempts in 2008), not only will Jacobs reach his quota, but Bradshaw playing the role as the primary back-up should see his fair share of work.

Bradshaw’s explosiveness and great burst of speed make him a threat to break it every time he touches the ball. In two seasons the Giant’s number two runner has ran the ball 90 times for 545-yards for a career average of over 6-yards per carry. If Bradshaw sees the same type of work as the previous number two he’s got a shot to be another 1,000-yard runner for the G-men.

Jacobs is going to command a lot of attention on draft day for most fantasy leagues, for those owners looking to add quality depth, take note and put it on the board. Ahmad Bradshaw is likely to be undervalued in many leagues and has the upside to be a great RB3. He’s not going to sneak up on anybody as a true sleeper, but he’s a good bet to out perform many expectations and could help win many fantasy leagues this season.

That’s my take and I’m sticking to it.

Sunday Night FF Headlines

Who’s making Fantasy News this Past Week?

WR Brandon Marshall returns to practice field…..
The Broncos and their fans were happy to see wide receiver Brandon Marshall back on the field Sunday. The stud wideout has been sidelined nursing a hamstring injury, but appears to be recovered. With injuries and legal woes behind him fantasy owners can pencil him down as a low-end WR1 or high WR2 in their respective fantasy drafts.

WR Steve Breaston’s injury not considered to be serious….
It sounds like the Cardinals number three receiver will be fine after spraining his PCL and bruising a bone on his right leg. Breaston is a great handcuff for either Boldin or Fitzgerald, but is a decent option in deeper fantasy leagues and those that employ three starting wideouts.

RB Chris Wells returns to practice sees no action…
For fantasy owners looking to draft Wells, his return to practice was a good sign. Although he did not see any action, no need to panic. The team is likely bringing him along slowly. Wells does not look in line to start right away, but will figure into the mix soon enough. Owners should be careful not to over-value the Cardinal’s rookie who is a much better RB3 in most drafts.

QB Drew Brees leaves camp to attend services…
The Saints quarterback left camp on Sunday to attend the funeral services for his mother (Mina Brees) who recently passed. He’s expected to rejoin the team on Wednesday. Thoughts and prayers are with the Brees family.

LB Patrick Willis expected to return to practice Monday…
The Niner’s linebacker tweaked an ankle early in camp, but will return to practice on Monday. Willis is considered a top tier linebacker in IDP leagues totaling over 140 tackles in 2008. He’ll once again be a stud this season and should go high on most draft boards.

QB Sage Rosenfels misses practice due to ankle injury…

The Vikings quarterback admitted to tweaking his ankle during the team’s first preseason game on Friday. As a result Rosenfels sat out of Sunday’s practice. The injury is not considered serious, so he should be back out there soon. Rosenfels appears to have the upper hand in the QB race and is the favorite to win the job, so expect to see him battling soon enough. Right now he’s the safer pick in Minnesota.

DB Brian Dawkins returns to training camp…
The Bronco’s veteran defensive back was back to practice, although he was not participating in any live action. At 35 years of age and a broken hand, despite his reputation Dawkins is a risky IDP pick-up in any early drafts. Owners would be wise to wait until he is fully recovered and back on the field.

PK Garrett Hartley expects to be suspended…
The Saint’s place-kicker is saying he expects to miss around four games to start the season for testing positive for a banned stimulant. With Hartly out, the Saints replacement kicker will be a hot pickup in the late rounds of fantasy drafts that have yet to conclude.
