Fantasy Football Week 6:
Starts & Sits

Each week fantasy owners are going to be faced with the decision of whether to start or sit some of the fringe players whose fantasy scoring of late and for the season is not quite on par as a starter. A slow start this season, a series of bad matchups, or just over-hyped, whatever the reason for the fringe players performances owners will still need to make the call to roll the dice or move along.

There are 14 games on the remaining schedule for Week 6 and 13 are on the slate for Sunday. And don’t forget the early game in London between the Ravens and Titans. Here are my Week 6, Starts and Sits.

Week 6 Starts

Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars)
- The Jaguars quarterback has yet to break out this season, but he did have one of his best games for yards last week, passing for over 300-yards. Lawrence will square off against a Colts defense that has allowed the 3rd most passing yards this season.

Kirk Cousins (Vikings)
- The Vikings passer will face a Bears defense that allows the 2nd most passing yards this season and has allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers)
- He’s coming off a strong Week 5 performance and should have his full complement of weapons this week with the return of Mike Evans.

Sam Howell (Commanders)
- In this road matchup with the Falcons, Howell and the Commanders may have to lean more on the passing game. 92 pass attempts for Howell in his past two starts.

Kyren Williams (Rams) - Williams is the fantasy RB11. This week he gets the Cardinals run defense that allows the 4th most fantasy points to opposing running backs.

D’Andre Swift (Eagles)
- The Eagles runner has cooled off the past couple of weeks, but a matchup with the Jets could get things heated once again. Jets allow over 4.0 yards per carry and the 9th most fantasy points to opposing runners.

Zay Flowers (Ravens)
- The Ravens receiver has been targeted 25 times over the past three weeks and is averaging double digit fantasy points.

DeAndre Hopkins (Titans)
- Coming off his best game of the season in week 5 with 8 receptions for 140 yards on 11 targets, Hopkins will look to keep it going against a Ravens secondary that has allowed 6th most receptions to opposing wideouts.

Jonnu Smith (Falcons)
- The Falcons tight end has been steady averaging 7 targets per game for the last three weeks.

Zach Ertz (Cardinals)
- Ertz has a nice matchup against a Rams defense that has allowed the most receiving yards and fantasy points to opposing tight ends.

Week 6 Sits

Jared Goff (Lions)
- A tough road matchup this week against a Bucs defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks over the past two weeks.

CJ Stroud (Texans)
- The Texans starter came back to earth last week and has another tough matchup this week against the Saints defense that allows the 8th fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks.

Rachaad White (Buccaneers)
- White has a tough matchup this week against one of the league’s best run defenses this season. The Lions have allowed the 4th fewest yards per game and 3rd fewest per carry this season.

Jerome Ford & Kareem Hunt (Browns)
- Without their starting quarterback, this offense could really struggle and with the 49ers defense playing well, I just don’t trust this backfield.

Amari Cooper (Browns)
- It’s not enough that the Browns are facing the 49ers (4th best defense in the league), but they will be without starter Deshaun Watson. It’s hard to sit Cooper, but I wouldn't expect much from him.

Hunter Henry (Patriots)
- After a hot start this season, Henry has gone cold along with the Patriots offense. For now the bench is the best place until the offense starts to show more consistency.

Darren Waller (Giants)
- The Giants will be without the services of starting quarterback Daniel Jones and Waller (groin) popped up on the injury report this week.  It will be tough to trust him if he is able to play.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: FRIDAY'S FANTASY FIXX

October 13th, 2023
David’s Daily
Friday Evening Edition

Friday’s Fantasy Fixx

(Week 6: Best Matchups/Plays)

The Books are closed on wWeek 5 and we are already one game into Week 6. It’s time to look ahead to the weekend and dig deep into a number of the matchups. As I look over the football horizon into the depths of the Gridiron gladiators set to take the battlefield for Week 6, these are some of the best matchups I like.

QB-Matthew Stafford (Rams)
- After a tough matchup against the Eagles in Week 5 for the Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (fantasy QB20), I am seeing a bounce back game in Week 6. With the Cardinals up next for Stafford, he’ll face a secondary that has allowed the 6th most completions, the 4th most passing yards, and the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. With Cooper Kupp back in the lineup and his newest toy (Puka Nacua), this one sets up for a big Sunday at Sofi Stadium.

RB-Raheem Mostert (Dolphins)
- The Dolphins will be without rookie running back De’Von Achane, but that’s okay, they still have Raheem Mostert (fantasy RB5). Mostert is averaging 5.4 yards per carry, has rushed for 314 yards, and scored 8 times (7 run, 1 rec) this season. Facing the Panthers this week, Mostert will have a chance for number 9 against a defense that has allowed the most rushing touchdowns, the third most rushing yards, and over 5.0 yards per carry to opposing running backs.

RB-James Cook (Bills)
- The Bills running back James Cook (fantasy RB21) has been quiet of late coming off his worst statistical output in Week 5. With just 8 touches and 21 total yards it was a dud. Cook will have a chance to right his ship this week against a Giants defense that has allowed the 2nd most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, along with over 5.0 yards per carry. This sets up to be a get right game for Cook.

WR-DJ Moore (Bears)
- The Bears receiver DJ Moore (fantasy WR5) has been on fire the last several weeks. Since week 2, Moore has either tallied more than 100 yards or receiving or scored a touchdown, and in two games both. His numbers during this stretch, 32 targets, 25 receptions, 506 yards receiving, and 5 receiving touchdowns. The outlook for Moore to continue his sizzle this Sunday is good. He’ll face a Vikings defense that has allowed the most receptions, receiving yards, and 3rd most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers.

WR-Christian Kirk (Jaguars)
- After a slow start in week one, the Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk has been very consistent. He’s scored in double digits fantasy points for four straight weeks, with a floor of 14.4 points and a ceiling over 21. Kirk is currently the fantasy WR24 through five weeks and has a great chance at moving up the board this week. Facing a Colts defense that allows the 9th most fantasy points to opposing receivers, including the 7th most receiving yards and 5 touchdowns.

TE-Logan Thomas (Commanders)
- The Commanders tight end Logan Thomas (fantasy TE6) is coming off his best game of the season in week 5 where he caught 9 passes for 77 yards and a score. With that strong performance a week ago, Thomas is looking at a great matchup in week 6 against a Falcons defense that has really struggled against opposing tight ends. Over the past two weeks the Falcons defense has allowed the most fantasy points to opposing tight ends which includes surrendering 17 receptions for 156 yards and a score.

Flex-Saquon Barkley (Giants)
- The Giants running back has a chance to return this week, although if he does, he’s likely to be limited in some fashion. Barkley hasn’t played since week 2, but could make his return Sunday night. Even if he’s limited in some capacity, the opposing running backs numbers against the Bills (allow the most yards per carry) this season have been so good, Barkley could still post flex worthy numbers.

These players may be in your lineup or they may not, but if they are sitting on your bench and you are facing a start’em dilemma this week consider these plays for Week 6. I guarantee nothing and offer much less, these are just my best guesses for their respective week 6 matchups.

Strong plays to consider for DFS as well.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: THURSDAY NIGHT MATCHUP

October 12th, 2023
David’s Daily Digest
Thursday Afternoon Edition

Thursday Night Matchup: DFS Faves

We are now into the fall season, and this is the time of year for witches, ghosts, goblins, and all things scary. Well, if you are the Denver Broncos heading into tonight’s matchup with the Chiefs, you have plenty to be scared about.

Through the first five weeks of the season, it’s been a disaster out of the gate for head coach Sean Payton and company. The Broncos are reeling at 1-4 and their defense has looked worse than flat, they’ve been bottom of the barrel awful (ranked dead last this season). The Broncos defense has not only allowed the most total yards this season, but they have also allowed the most points. If there ever was a cure to get this ship turned around for Broncos, facing the Chiefs at Arrowhead is not it.

Patrick Mahomes just may be the Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th reference) the Broncos would love to avoid. The Chiefs offense has yet to really look like it’s normal dominant self, but a matchup with the league’s worst defense could quickly remedy this. If it’s sound like, avoid the Broncos tonight and roll out all of the Chiefs players, that may just be about the soundest advice anyone associated with fantasy football could offer.

The game still has to be played, so I’ll offer my thoughts on tonight’s best matchup and add this little nugget to the fray. It is true what they say about the NFL, Any Given Sunday. But tonight’s matchup in Arrowhead will be played on Thursday night.

Thursday's (DFS) Take Five;

1.  Isaiah Pacheco (RB) - The Chiefs running back should be poised for a big night against the league’s worst run defense. Since week 2 the Broncos run defense has been in the bottom for fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs in three of the four games. With the tight end Travis Kelce possibly slowed with a bum ankle, Pacheco coming on strong the last three weeks, the Chiefs will likely feature their running game early. I, as I am sure many do, like Pacheco a lot in this one. He runs violently and strong and will surely break several tackles, maybe even break loose for a long run or two. (DK-My Captain)

2.Patrick Mahomes (QB) - The Chiefs quarterback has typically had great success against the Broncos in the win-loss columns, even when his numbers have not been the best. This season Mahomes numbers seem a little down, but a matchup with the Broncos may be just what he needs to get his numbers back the normal Mahomes tier. Last season in week 17 Mahomes torched the Broncos for 328 yards passing and three touchdown passes. I would not be surprised to see similar numbers on Thursday night.

3. Rashee Rice (WR) - The Chiefs rookie wide receiver has been the team’s most consistent over the past couple of weeks. With Kelce ailing, even if he goes, more opportunities for Rice could open up on Thursday night. He’ll offer some great value in DFS with some true potential for a big game.

4. Chiefs Defense (DST) - There is no question after what we’ve seen from the Chiefs and Broncos this season, it’s pretty easy to predict the likelihood of this contest. The Chiefs will score early, build a lead, then turn the hounds loose. I wouldn’t expect a dominant performance, the Broncos should be able to post a couple of scores, but trailing big, the O-line will surrender 3-4 sacks and the Chiefs defense will force a turnover or two.

5. Marvin Mims Jr (WR) - The Broncos rookie wide receiver can’t seem to break-through in the rotation averaging just 28% of the snaps this season. He’s not only behind the starters Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy, but he’s well behind Brandon Johnson (49%) as well. The offense has had its ups and downs this season and now the team faces a monumental task when they face Mahomes and company. Russell Wilson and the Broncos offense desperately need a spark and Mims Jr could be the ignition needed. He’s had a couple of big plays this season and that’s something the Broncos will really need on Thursday night. He’ll offer great value and could be the catalyst for the Broncos to put points on the board.

The Broncos have activated tight end Greg Dulcich. If the Broncos are going to have any success tonight quarterback Russell Wilson will need to find his tight end. Dulcich could be a low value sleeper pick tonight in DFS.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: THE WEDNESDAY WATERCOOLER

October 11th, 2023
David’s Daily Digest
Wednesday Evening Edition

The Wednesday Watercooler

Targets Equal Opportunities

5 weeks in and with week 6 on the horizon, there’s still one formula to success in fantasy football. Your guy needs to get the ball. In fantasy football luck will always play its part, but success is all about chances and opportunities. You can’t win if you don’t have the ball and your dudes can’t score fantasy points if they don’t have a chance.

Here are the weekly leaders for Receiving Targets;

Week 5
Top 10 WR
1. Ja’Marr Chase (19)
2. Adam Thielen (13)
3. Cooper Kupp (12)
4. Stefon Diggs (11)
5. DeAndre Hopkins (11)
6. Puka Nacua (11)
7. Zay Flowers (11)
8. DJ Moore (10)
9. George Pickens (10)
10. Jakobi Myers (10)

It looks like the Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp didn’t skip a beat in his week 5 return. But more importantly for fantasy owners, it appears the other Rams receiver Puka Nacua was able to continue his high volume assault in the passing game. Through five games Nacua leads the NFL with 63 targets.

Top 10 TE
1. Travis Kelce (11)
2. Logan Thomas (11)
3. Kyle Pitts (11)
4. Darren Waller (11)
5.Dalton Schultz (10)
6. Mark Andrews (10)
7. Dallas Goedert (9)
8. Chigoziem Okonkwo (9)
9. TJ Hockenson (8)
10. Evan Engram (8)

And just like that the effect of Pop-icon, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has not affected Travis Kelce’s game. Another strong performance from the Chief’s tight end in week 5, has him back on top of the fantasy tight end pedestal. Kelce ranks second among tight ends with 37 targets this season and over the past three weeks he ranks 1st with 23 receptions, 2nd with 196 yards receiving. His three receiving touchdowns is also tied for the league lead among tight ends.

Top 10 RB
1. David Montgomery (6)
2. D’Andre Swift (6)
3. Antonio Gibson (6)
4. Travis Etienne Jr (5)
5. Josh Jacobs (5)
6. Tyjae Spears (5)
7. Samaje Perine (5)
8. Tony Pollard (5)
9. Patrick Taylor (5)
10. Jaleel McLaughlin (4)

The Raiders running back Josh Jacobs is starting to look more and more like the league’s leading rusher from a year ago, but it is apparent he has elevated his pass receiving skills this season. It is evident with his 30 targets (most among running backs) and 23 receptions this season, he is also being featured more in the passing game. Last season Jacobs caught 53 balls and currently he is on a pass to exceed 75 catches.

Touches Are Fantasy Gold

Just like a receiver needs to be targeted, a running backs success leans heavily on how many times they touch (carries + catches) the rock.

Here are the weekly Touch leaders;

Week 5
Top 10 RB
1. Travis Etienne Jr (30)
2. Joe Mixon (29)
3. Derrick Henry (28)
4. Zack Moss (25)
5. Breece Hall (25)
6. Alvin Kamara (25)
7. Josh Jacobs (25)
8. D’Andre Swift (23)
9. David Montgomery (21)
10. Christian McCaffrey (21)

Over the past two weeks, since he returned to action following his three-game suspension, the Saints running back Alvin Kamara is averaging 24.5 touches per game (ranks 4th among running backs). As a result of this high-volume workload, Kamara has totaled 181 yards of offense, caught 16 passes, and scored one rushing touchdown, making him the fantasy RB8 in that span.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: THE WAIVER WIRE

October 10th, 2023
David’s Daily Digest
Tuesday Late-Evening Edition

The Waiver Wire

With Week 5 long gone and in the mirror, it’s time to look ahead to week 6. With injuries always playing its’ part in the game, the Waiver wire never runs dry with new names, faces, and options to fill the void caused by the Bye weeks and injuries.

My first Waiver wire notes are the pickups of the week (for week 6). The Steelers running back Najee Harris continues to lose volume to teammate Jaylen Warren. In week 5 Harris narrowly out snapped Warren 37 to 32 and the touches were 15 (Harris) to 12 (Warren). Warren has proven to be the more effective running back, particularly in the passing game. If he’s available, he needs to be owned.

In Kansas City where there is no clear-cut number two receiving option behind tight end Travis Kelce, I believe the rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice could emerge. Rice has averaged nearly 6 targets per game over his last three games and has 12 receptions for 124 yards and score. He has nearly doubled in fantasy points the next Chiefs receiver closest to him. The Chiefs offense has yet to hit its stride this season and in what could be a high volume, high octane offense, the second round draft pick (Rice) is one of the pieces that should be owned.

Here’s the list of other notable claims that should be made this week.

RB-Kendre Miller (Saints) - Alvin Kamara is the clear starter, but Miller would be the cuff to own and worth the stash.

RB-Jordan Mason (49ers) - Just like Kamara, Christian McCaffrey seldom comes off the field. But Mason is the cuff and he should be owned and stashed.

RB-Emari Demercado (Cardinals) - With Conner going on IR, Demercado, the fantasy RB18 in week 5, looks to be the next man up.

RB-Tyjae Spears (Titans) - Recorded 11 touches for 69 yards of offense in week 5.

WR-Josh Downs (Colts) - 21 targets in last three games, led team in receptions and yards in week 5.

WR-Jonathan Mingo (Panthers) - He was second on the team in week 5 with 7 targets. He has been targeted at least 5 times in every game played this season.

WR-Trenton Irwin (Bengals) - Targeted 10 times in week 5 to Tyler Boyd’s 7.

TE-Dalton Schultz (Texans) - He may have fallen off for a bit, but looks to be back on the radar (10 targets in week 5).

TE-Jonnu Smith (Falcons) - Despite the strong performance from teammate Kyle Pitts, Smith was still heavily involved. He out-snapped Pitts and was targeted 7 times in week 5.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: FF SOMETHING WORTH NOTING (WK5)

October 10th, 2023
David’s Daily Digest
Tuesday Evening Edition

Fantasy Football: Something Worth Noting

Looking back, at what was Week 5, I have several takeaways that not only define the week, but also provide some fantasy football implications owners can take with them into week 6.

Patriots are awful (both sides)
Right now the Patriots are a mess and look terrible on both sides. The offense is in shambles, no production from any of the skill positions and the defense looks like a house of cards ready to fall at the first site of a strong wind. Avoid Patriots starters for now and start any team defense facing New England. If you have any running backs (ppr) matched up against the Patriots defense, they should be considered a safe play.

Broncos have worst defense, absolutely awful vs run
I don’t think I’ve seen any other team nearly as bad against the run this decade, as the Broncos have been this season. The Dolphins massacre may have been considered an outlier that slightly inflates the numbers, but after their performance in week 5 against the Jets, the numbers are true and you are what your record says; yards per carry allowed ranked last, rushing yards allowed per game ranked last, rushing yards allowed this season last, and rushing touchdowns allowed second to last.

George Pickens is a stud - just give Pickett time.
He was one of my pre-draft targets this season, although I was only able to get him in two of my six drafts. Pickens has great hands, crazy athletic ability and if the Steelers O-line can just give quarterback Kenny Pickett time, good things happen. Pickens is the fantasy WR19 at the moment, but trending in the right direction. Three of his last four games have been 75 yards receiving or more with two over 125 yards. Just give it time.

The Giants may have found Waller.
I just can’t figure out what the objective is when the Giants have the ball. All preseason the tales just continued to grow about Waller and Jones, but so far this season there’s been little evidence. That is until week five, where Waller was targeted a season high 11 times and recorded 8 grabs for 86 yards. I’d like to think the Giants have found possibly their best pass catcher, but this is a tough read for fantasy owners. Jones was knocked from the contest late and the Giants were trailing by multiple scores late. Regardless I’m just hoping the Giants watch the tape and realize they have Waller.

The Joe Cool and Chase show is back
It took five weeks, but well worth the wait. I admit, I jumped the gun and believed I had to look elsewhere and move off Joe for week 5. Now I never entertained the idea of dropping Joe, just wanted to wait until he plays better and looks healthy. He definitely looked great, threw the ball incredibly well and when Chase has his buddy Joe slinging it, great things happen. It’s safe to say, keep rolling with Joe Cool and JC.

Kupp and Nacua - the new Dynamic Duo
There was little doubt in my mind that a Sean McVay offense could support both Nacua and Kupp. I’d say my only hesitation was how much workload would Kupp be ready to handle. I’d say 12 targets would indicate nothing to worry about. And his teammate Nacua saw 11 of his own. Both receivers finished fantasy WR11 (Nacua) and WR12 (Kupp). They look like the new dynamic duo.

Justin Fields forever Moore.
There’s something happening in Chicago. The past two weeks have been a big indicator and I am believing that Fields has found his go to in Moore and fantasy owners can expect to see more of this going forward. Over his past two games Moore has caught 16 passes for 361 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s also scored a touchdown in three straight games. Fields, now the fantasy QB4 has tossed 8 touchdowns with one pick in his last two starts and his 11 total touchdowns passes ranks tied for 2nd this season. Both are must-starts going forward.

The Niners are the best team right now
I don’t think I need to announce this to anyone who watches the NFL. But after their week 5 Sunday night dismantling of the Cowboys, it’s really hard to not recognize the Niners as the best and most complete team. As impressive as they are with weapons on offense like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, etc., they are equally impressive on the other side. IDP studs would include Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, and Dre Greenlaw. They may not run the table, 17 games is a long season, but they are going to be a tough out in the playoffs for whatever unlucky team has to face them.

That's my take!

FSH NOTEBOOK: SUNDAY'S HEROES WEEK 5

October 9th, 2023
David’s Daily Digest
Monday Evening Edition

NFL Sunday Week 5:
Sunday’s Heroes

Week 5 is in the books with all of the games now concluded. It’s once again that time of the week to look back on Sunday and recognize some of the memorable performances from our Gridiron Heroes.

These were some of the NFL Week 5 Sunday Heroes.

QB, Jared Goff (Lions) - The Lions quarterback enjoyed his best game of the season, completing 20 of 28 passes (71.4% completion rate), throwing for 236 yards and tossing three touchdowns. His week 5 performance was good enough for fantasy QB3. Up next for Goff and the Lions, the Buccaneers (allow the 8th fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks).

RB, Breece Hall (Jets) - The Jets running back Breece Hall enjoyed his 2023 season coming out party against the Broncos on Sunday. Hall rushed for 177 yards (led all running backs for the week) on 22 carries, averaging 8.0 yards per carry and added a 72 yard rushing touchdown. The 2nd year back also added three receptions for 17 yards on the day. His numbers were good enough for the fantasy RB3. Next week the Jets will play host to the Eagles (ranked 3rd vs run this season).

WR, DJ Moore (Bears) - The Bears wide receiver DJ Moore continued his strong play in week 5. In the Thursday night tilt, Moore was tremendous hauling in 8 passes for 230 yards receiving and three scores. He finished the week as the fantasy WR1. Next week the Bears will play host to the Vikings (have allowed the most receiving yards to wide receivers).

TE, Dallas Goedert (Eagles) - The Eagles flew into Sofi Stadium on Sunday and soared past the Rams led by Goedert and company. The Eagles tight end caught 8 passes on 9 targets and registered 117 yards receiving with one touchdown reception. His performance was good enough for fantasy TE2. Up next for Goedert and the Eagles are the Jets (over the last two weeks have allowed the most receiving yards to tight ends).

IDP, Quincy Williams (Jets) - The Jets 5th year linebacker had himself a day on Sunday. Williams recorded 5 solo tackles, 4 assists, one tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. Williams and the Jets defense harassed Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson all day wreaking havoc in the backfield. Williams added two sacks and 3 QB hits. Up next for Williams, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles.

That's my take!
