Fantasy Football: Something Worth Noting

(Week 10 Takeaways)

The Giants offense is bad.

Not only are the G-men the lowest scoring team in the league, but they also have the fewest passing yards per game and only the Jets have fewer passing touchdowns. The Giants continue to set new lows and other than running back Saquon Barkley (fantasy RB24), no other G-man is in the top 100 of fantasy.

The Lions offense is fantasy gold.

Not only is Goff playing his way into a fantasy starter for the back stretch of the season, the offense has at least four other fantasy starters in Amon-Ra St.Brown (fantasy WR6), Jahmyr Gibbs (fantasy RB8), David Montgomery (fantasy RB9), and Sam LaPorta (fantasy TE4).

Other notable takeaways from Week 10.

The Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (fantasy QB4) has averaged 360.7 yards passing while completing 73% of his passes with 11 touchdowns over his last three games.

The Commanders quarterback Sam Howell (fantasy QB9) has thrown 17 touchdowns this season, including 8 in his last three games.

The Lions running back David Montgomery (fantasy RB9) who has 501 yards rushing, has rushed for over 100 yards in a game three times this season.

The Lions rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs (fantasy RB8) has cashed in with 4 rushing touchdowns this season to go along with his 476 yards rushing and 200 receiving yards.

With his 11 catches on Sunday, the Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen (fantasy WR2) now leads the NFL with 73 receptions this season through 9 games.

The Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (fantasy WR4) has been on a tear of late, totaling  41 receptions for 617 yards receiving with three touchdowns over his last four games.

With his 11 grabs on Sunday, the Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson (fantasy TE2) has hauled in 71 passes this season to lead all tight ends.

The 49ers tight end George Kittle (fantasy TE4) has totaled 35 receptions for 559 yards receiving and averaged 16 yards per reception this season.

NFL Sunday Week 9

Sunday’s Heroes

There was a lot of great action in week 10 and some fantastic performances. These were just a couple of the notable I watched on Sunday and would like to recognize for the greatness they were.

CJ Stroud (Texans) The rookie quarterback is playing well beyond his years. He’s playing his way into the MVP conversation with his recent outings. On Sunday the kid added to his legend bringing his team from behind for the Week 10 win, while passing for 356 yards and adding two scores (1 pass, 1 run). He’s the fantasy QB5 and has now entered the must-start territory.

Jared Goff (Lions) The Lions quarterback delivered on Sunday leading his team to Week 10 win over the Chargers. Goff passed 333 yards, while completing 69.7% of his passes and throwing two touchdowns. Goff is a fringe fantasy starter at the moment, but averaging 296.3 yards passing over his last three games, he’s trending upward.

TJ Hockenson (Vikings) Even when he’s banged up, Hockenson plays big. On Sunday he was a target monster (15 targets) turning in a huge performance to help lead the Vikings to a road win over the Saints. Hockenson pulled in 11 passes for 134 yards receiving and a touchdown. Hockenson is tight end gold.

Colts Defense (DST) The Colts defense showed up and delivered in Germany on Sunday, shutting down the Patriots offense. The Colts pass rush caused turmoil and chaos all afternoon for quarterback Mac Jones and company. The D recorded five sacks and forced two turnovers. The Colts defense (fantasy DST10) has now strung together solid back-to-back outings and should be owned coming out of their upcoming week 11 bye.

Fantasy Football: Something Worth Noting 

(Week 6 Takeaways)

There was plenty to take notice of from the games just played. Here’s a look back at week 6 and some fantasy football notes that I believe are worth a take or two.

Jared Goff (Lions-QB) The Lions starter has been better than good over the past three weeks averaging more than 20 fantasy points per game. In his last two starts he’s been even better, averaging 36 pass attempts, 24.9 fantasy points per game, while passing for 294.5 yards and 2.5 touchdowns per game. A solid streamer, maybe even starter in deeper leagues.

Sam Howell (Commanders-QB) The Commanders signal caller has been pretty good for fantasy managers the past couple of weeks. Over his last two starts, Howell is averaging 37 pass attempts, a completion rate of 70.3%, 269.5 yards passing, 2.5 touchdown passes, and 21.9 fantasy points. A great streaming options to get through the byes.

Raheem Mostert (Dolphins-RB) Handling lead back duties in week 6 and expected to continue in this role for the near future, Mostert is cementing himself as a weekly must-start. In his last two starts he has totaled 4 touchdowns (3 run, 1 receive), averaged over 100 yards of offense, and averaged 25 fantasy points per game. He's locked into weekly lineups.

Alvin Kamara (Saints-RB) Over the last two weeks, the Saints running back is the fantasy RB7. He’s averaging 20.5 rush attempts, 74 yards rushing, 26.5 yards receiving, 5 receptions, and 18 fantasy points per game. Another weekly lock and a reliable DFS play.

Travis Etienne Jr (Jaguars-RB) The Jaguars running back has been stellar for fantasy managers over the last two weeks leading all ball carriers in fantasy scoring. Over his past two games, Etienne Jr has averaged 22 rushing attempts, 95.5 yards rushing, 3.5 receptions, 38 yards receiving, two touchdowns, and 29.9 fantasy points per game. A DFS anchor and weekly starter.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (Lions-WR) The Lions wide receiver has been about the most consistent this season. He suffered an abdomen injury that forced him to miss Week 5, but this season St. Brown has caught at least 5 passes in all of his games, including 26 receptions in his last three. He's locked in every week.

Adam Thielen (Panthers-WR) The Old man in Carolina has found the fountain of youth this season. Thielen is currently the fantasy WR6 (points per game) this season and he’s averaging 11.3 targets, 9.7 receptions, 99.3 yards receiving, and 23.8 fantasy points the past three weeks. H has to be started every week.

Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins-WR) Living in the shadow of Tyreek Hills the Dolphins other wide receiver has been steady the past couple of weeks. In his last two games, Waddle is averaging 9.5 targets, 6 receptions, 43 receiving yards, one touchdown, and 16.3 fantasy points. His upside makes it difficult to sit him anytime, a lineup staple.

Kyle Pitts (Falcons-TE) The Falcons tight end is starting to come alive this season averaging 15 fantasy points in his last two. Pitts has posted back-to-back strong outings with 11 receptions, 130 yards receiving, combined with one touchdown. He's back in the weekly starter conversation now.

Dalton Schultz (Texans-TE) The Texans tight end has been heating up of late. Schultz has scored in three straight and in his last two games he’s averaging 8.5 targets per game, tied for 2nd most among tight ends. He's a safe starter.

NFL Sunday Week 5:

Sunday’s Heroes

Week 5 is in the books with all of the games now concluded. It’s once again that time of the week to look back on Sunday and recognize some of the memorable performances from our Gridiron Heroes.

These were some of the NFL Week 5 Sunday Heroes.

QB, Jared Goff (Lions) - The Lions quarterback enjoyed his best game of the season, completing 20 of 28 passes (71.4% completion rate), throwing for 236 yards and tossing three touchdowns. His week 5 performance was good enough for fantasy QB3. Up next for Goff and the Lions, the Buccaneers (allow the 8th fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks).

RB, Breece Hall (Jets) - The Jets running back Breece Hall enjoyed his 2023 season coming out party against the Broncos on Sunday. Hall rushed for 177 yards (led all running backs for the week) on 22 carries, averaging 8.0 yards per carry and added a 72 yard rushing touchdown. The 2nd year back also added three receptions for 17 yards on the day. His numbers were good enough for the fantasy RB3. Next week the Jets will play host to the Eagles (ranked 3rd vs run this season).

WR, DJ Moore (Bears) - The Bears wide receiver DJ Moore continued his strong play in week 5. In the Thursday night tilt, Moore was tremendous hauling in 8 passes for 230 yards receiving and three scores. He finished the week as the fantasy WR1. Next week the Bears will play host to the Vikings (have allowed the most receiving yards to wide receivers).

TE, Dallas Goedert (Eagles) - The Eagles flew into Sofi Stadium on Sunday and soared past the Rams led by Goedert and company. The Eagles tight end caught 8 passes on 9 targets and registered 117 yards receiving with one touchdown reception. His performance was good enough for fantasy TE2. Up next for Goedert and the Eagles are the Jets (over the last two weeks have allowed the most receiving yards to tight ends).

IDP, Quincy Williams (Jets) - The Jets 5th year linebacker had himself a day on Sunday. Williams recorded 5 solo tackles, 4 assists, one tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. Williams and the Jets defense harassed Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson all day wreaking havoc in the backfield. Williams added two sacks and 3 QB hits. Up next for Williams, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles.

Fantasy Football Wins!

(NFL Week 2)

I am going to have bad picks and I’m going to have some good ones too. It’s just the nature of this game, so here are my week 2 picks that hit.

Jared Goff (QB) - The Lions quarterback was sizzling for most of the Sunday afternoon, with the exception of one glaring pick-six mistake. The rest of his day he produced 323 passing yards and tossed three scores. He finished as fantasy QB8 for the week. 

James Cook (RB) - The Bills running back turned in his first big Sunday of the 2023 season, finishing the week as fantasy RB11. Cook was solid carrying the ball 17 times for 123 yards and added 4 receptions for another 36 yards.

Amon-Ra St.Brown (WR) - The Lions wide receiver was solid, but not spectacular. He turned in a serviceable 6-catch, 102 receiving yards effort, good enough for fantasy WR34 for the week. Not quite wide receiver one territory, more like a solid flex play, but that’ll work for fantasy purposes.

Tee Higgins (WR) - Following a week one dud, the Bengals stud receiver came to life in week 2. Higgins posted a big donut in the team’s season opener, but on Sunday he was spectacular. Higgins caught 8 passes on 12 targets for 89 yards receiving with two touchdowns, finishing the day as fantasy WR4.

Deebo Samuel (WR) - Coming off a quiet game in week one, you just knew Deebo would be featured (11 touches on Sunday) and he delivered. Deebo totaled 101 scrimmage yards and added a touchdown, finishing as the Week 2 fantasy WR12. Of course he did.

Hunter Henry (TE) - Two weeks in a row Henry has been the top pass catching option at tight end. This seems hardly sustainable for the duration of the season and since he was unlikely drafted as your starter in your league, he (or your original first tight end pick could be a high sell.

Cam Akers (RB) - This one seemed predictable to me, considering some of the off-field issues the team dealt with last season. Although Akers seemed to have turned things around in the latter half of last season, it seems now maybe all of the issues did not get resolved. In any case, the Rams seem to be moving on, as should fantasy owners for the time being.

Pat Freiermuth (TE) – Another predictable outcome with this pick. The Steelers offense was bad in week one and for the most part (with the exception of the Pickens score) they were bad last night. Freiermuth recorded one catch for two yards on a single target on Monday night.

The season is early and there’s a lot more football to be played. This list will grow.

FSH NOTEBOOK: 10 THINGS FOR NFL SUNDAY

10 Things for NFL Sunday

(Week 2)

With the Kickoff to NFL Sunday week 2 just a few hours away, I’m getting fresh batteries for my remotes, breaking out the second TV, switching on Youtube TV (with Sunday Ticket), checking my fantasy lineups, making some last minute adjustments, and tuning into the latest fantasy shows for injury updates.

There’s a lot to take in and the clock to kickoff is counting down. On top of the inventory check on cold beverages and football foods supply for the day, here are the Top-10 things on my mind as I anxiously await for NFL Sunday to kick off;

1. “James gets cooking” - I like what I saw from the Bills running back on Monday night. Although he did not put up great numbers, his snap share and his usage indicated to me, he’s the guy. It’s only a matter of time before he gets cooking and week 2 versus the Raiders is as good a time as any.

2. “Joe Cool to Chase” - The Bengals passing offense was stagnant in week one, but you had a tough Browns defense and horrible weather. It looks like the weather won’t be a factor this week

3. Henry is still King” - At least for another Sunday, Titans running back will show why he is King. The Chargers are traveling back east for an early game, so this sets up as one of those games where they could fall flat. You know the Titans will lean hard on Henry, especially with a banged up D-Hop (DeAndre Hopkins).

4. “Big Sunday for Big Mike” - The Chargers wideout was quiet in week one and as per the norm, he’ll bounce back this week with a big performance. It’s a good matchup for Big Mike and three times last season when he was targeted fewer than 5 times, he averaged nearly 22 fantasy points.

5. “ASB & Lions keep prowling” - When was the last time the Lions started out 2-0? How about 2023? The Lions will be on the prowl today squaring off with the Seahawks. This matchup looks like a great opportunity for Goff to ASB (Amon-Ra St. Brown) to be called a couple of times. The Seahawks secondary was torched in week one.

6. “Texans not out of Woods” - It’s not surprising to see Robert Woods still hanging around in the NFL, but after the past two quiet seasons I hardly expected to hear his name called again. Now he didn’t light up the scoreboard last week, but he did turn in a solid 6 catch, 57 yards receiving performance. The glaring statistics were his 10 targets and 75.3% snap count. He may not have much fantasy relevance leading into the 2023 campaign, but those numbers might say otherwise.

7. “Mooney is money” - DJ Moore who? Did everyone forget about Mooney? Mooney was a 1,000 yard receiver for the Bears in 2021 and before going down to injury in 2022 he was a primary target for quarterback Justin Fields. Fields trust him and knows he’s money. Don’t count him out.

8. “Waller is winning” - The Giants tight end doesn’t carry an injury designation leading into Sunday. Fantasy owners can grab your popcorn and get ready to see what all the hype during training camp was all about.

9. “Sunday is Deebo Time” - It’s rivalry Sunday, Rams and Niners and that means Deebo time. The Niners wideout has scored in four of their last five meetings, including 5 total touchdowns. He was relatively quiet in week one, but against the Rams I expect a lot of noise from the playmaker.

10. “Jeudy will bring the Juice” - He may be on a pitch count, but no question when he’s on the field he’ll make it count. One element missing last Sunday from the Broncos offense was explosiveness. Jeudy has great speed and can be electric, on Sunday he will bring the juice.

FSH NOTEBOOK: (DFS) THE FAVORITE FIVE

My week one picks didn’t fare too well. With Justin Herbert (QB5) and Travis Etienne Jr. (RB6), my backfield was secure, but beyond that it was lackluster. Both of my wideouts finished outside the top 20, Chris Godwin was WR40 and Mike Williams was WR50. And in an ugly week for the tight ends, Juwan Johnson finished as the TE18.

Looking ahead to Sunday, I am hoping to bounce back with some strong plays that deserve Week 2 consideration.

QB-Jared Goff ($6200) - I love this matchup for Goff and company. At home this week against a reeling Seahawks secondary that allowed 334 air yards in week 1 (ranked 30th vs pass). Goff’s showing in week one was a bit pedestrian (just one score), but he’ll have the luxury of home cooking this week and should take advantage. At his salary, I consider him a great play against the Seahawks.

RB-Travis Etienne Jr ($6900) - Again a great matchup this week for Etienne and at his salary I love this play. In week one the Jags running back finished as the No.6 fantasy running back and this week he could finish as a Top-10 once again. Etienne was in on 80% of the offensive snaps and totaled over 100 yards in week one, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. The Chiefs defense allowed better than four yards a tilt against the Lions in week one, so with his 18 carries and 5 targets in week one, I’m expecting Etienne to again find similar success. He’ll be a week 2 Stud to anchor my DFS lineups.

WR-Amon-Ra St.Brown ($7800) - I gotta tie St. Brown to Goff in this one. One of the biggest keys to the success of the Lions passing game and to Goff is Amon-Ra. In week one he was targeted 9 times (tied for 17th among WRs), a low-number considering he totaled 146 in 2022 (ranked 8th). I am expecting to see ASB heavily targeted in this one against a secondary that allowed the 2nd most receptions to opposing wide receivers in week one. ASB will be another one of my Stud anchors in my DFS lineup for week 2.

WR-Darnell Mooney ($4400) - If there ever was a value play in week 2, this has to be it. Despite the low volume passing in the Bears offense (only 13 passes to WRS - 3rd fewest in week 1), Mooney still finished as WR20. Mooney dominated the WR target shares with a 53.8% share and 18.9% overall. He converted his opportunity to 4 catches for 53 yards and a score. This Sunday Mooney faces a Bucs defense that was torched for 242 air yards by the opposing WRs. A similar line in week 2 is gold in DFS.

TE-Adam Trautman ($3000) - The Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was highly efficient in week one and will have one of his primary weapons in Jerry Jeudy back this week. The Commanders defense will be forced to deal with Jeudy’s explosiveness which could offer a lot of room for the underneath stuff. At his salary Trautman is worth the risk, especially considering the Commanders defense allowed the 2nd most receptions to the position in week one. 

These are my favorite plays for Week 2.

FSH NOTEBOOK: FRIDAY'S FANTASY FIXX

(Favorable Matchups)

After one week of data it doesn’t get any easier for fantasy owners to decide who to start and who to sit, but the information does help. So let’s take a look at the week 2 matchups and set our lineups for Sunday.

QB-Jared Goff (Lions) - Coming off a week 1 win over the defending champion Chiefs, Lions quarterback Jared Goff will be playing with a lot of confidence in this week 2 matchup. Goff and company will square off against a Seahawks defense that allowed 334 yards passing (3rd most) in week one. This could be a big afternoon for Goff.

RB-Bijan Robinson (Falcons) - Considering his usage in the passing game in week one, this Sunday against the Packers could be a big afternoon for the Rookie. Robinson was targeted six times in week one and will face a Packers defense that allowed 11 receptions (2nd most) last week. The Falcons rookie should have another productive Sunday.

WR-DeAndre Hopkins (Titans) - Just playing the numbers with this call. Last week Hopkins was heavily targeted and no reason it should not continue. This Sunday the Titans will face a Chargers secondary that surrendered the most receptions, yards, and touchdowns to opposing wide receivers. Fantasy owners can expect Hopkins to turn in another busy Sunday.

WR-Ja’Marr Chase (Bengals) - After a quiet week one, this sets up to be a great bounce back game for Chase and the Bengals offense. In two games versus the Ravens last season Chase was targeted 25 times, so the elite wideout can be expected to be heavily involved in the passing game this week.

TE-Evan Engram (Jaguars) - The Jags tight end was a bit quiet in week one, but still finished as the No.5 fantasy tight end with 5 catches for 49 yards. This week Engram will take his shot at the Chiefs defense that surrendered 7 catches (tied for 3rd most) last week to the opposing tight end. Last postseason, the Chiefs were able to limit Engram to 31 yards receiving, but that was the pre-Ridley era. Results this Sunday should be very different.

These are not necessarily considered week 2 start’ems, as some are of course already locked in your lineups as they should be. These are rather my predictions or feelings about their respective week 2 matchups and outcomes this weekend. 

These are my week 2 favorites with some great matchups.

FSH NOTEBOOK: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

Who Are You Starting & Sitting

A lot of games on the slate today for Sunday Week 10 and with fantasy playoffs fast approaching it begs the obvious question, who are you starting and sitting today?

GB @ CHI

The Bears have a pretty good defense, so I am not expecting much from the Packers offense. I am sitting Ty Montgomery today. With Aaron Jones having earned the starting backfield duties, Montgomery will be limited. Since returning from injury Montgomery is averaging just 7.3 touches per game.

CLE @ DET

The Browns do a pretty good job against the run and the Lions don’t run the ball well, so I am starting Marvin Jones Jr. The Lions will once again have to rely on Stafford and the pass and Jones (No.15 fantasy WR in PPR) has been trending upward for weeks now.

PIT @ IND

With Martavis Bryant back and the emergence of JuJu Smith-Schuster, I am starting Big Ben today. He’ll be a JuJu-Bee special today against the Colts!

LAC @ JAX

The Jags are tough against the pass and while I might not be sitting Keenan Allen today (but not expecting a lot), I am starting running back Melvin Gordon. Gordon is the No.5 fantasy RB in PPR and the Jags yield a lot of yards on the ground (125 yds/game).

NO @ BUF

The Saints have been good this season, but traditionally they do not travel well. That being the case here, they will have a tough matchup against a good Bills defense. While I’d be nervous starting any of the Saints, I am starting running back Alvin Kamara. He’ll see his usual workload today and I love his contributions in the pass game; 37 receptions this season.

NYJ @ TB

With a road game today, I am starting Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson against a terrible Bucs defense. Anderson has been trending in the right direction and the Bucs allow the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing receivers.

MIN @ WASH

With Redskins tight end Jordan Reed on the shelf for Sunday, I am starting Vernon Davis. I am not expecting a big output, but he should provide decent numbers for owners in a bind today.

CIN @ TEN

After five straight games with less than 60 rushing yards, I am sitting Titans running back DeMarco Murray. Murray has been dinged up most of the season. He doesn’t look right, he’s not producing, and right now he’s too risky to trust.

HOU @ LAR

With the Rams rolling and the offense playing well this season, I am starting quarterback Jared Goff. The 2nd year passer has played very well this season and I love this matchup against the Texans at home. Over the past two weeks, the Texans secondary has been toasted for 760 yards passing and 6 touchdowns.

DAL @ ATL

This game is being forecasted as a potential shootout and along with Julio Jones, I will be starting Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. The Cowboys have allowed 10 touchdowns to opposing receivers and with a lot of attention focused on Julio, I think Sanu sneaks one in.

NYG @ SF

With a road matchup today with the Niners, I am starting Giants running back Orleans Darkwa against one of the league’s worst run defenses (allow 135.6 yards/game). I expect to see Darkwa receive a heavy workload and have success today.

NE @ DEN

The Broncos offense has struggled mightily for several weeks now, but tonight against the Patriots I am starting wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. The Broncos receiver is coming off a 8/70/1 stat line; he’ll the main focal point of the pass game against secondary that has allowed the 5th most receptions and 3rd most receiving yards to opposing receivers.

The Year of the Goff

In just a year’s time, the Rams quarterback Jared Goff has gone from the out-house to the Penthouse. It just took the genius mind of the Rams new head coach Sean McVay to bring out the best in Goff. And what a difference a year makes.

Under the Jeff Fischer regime, the Rams were cellar dwellers with a record of 4 and 12. This season however, the Rams are currently 6-2 atop the NFC west and the play of quarterback Jared Goff has been a big part of the turnaround.

Through the halfway point of the season Goff is the No.12 fantasy quarterback, up from finishing as the No.37 in 2016. This season Goff has been more accurate with the ball, completing 147 of 244 passes for a 60.2 percentage and has been more effective averaging better than 250 yards passing per game.

The Rams offense has also been more explosive (ranked 1st in scoring this season) and effective this season, in large part to the passing success of Goff who has 13 passing touchdowns. What a difference a year makes.

After a precarious start to his NFL career just one season ago, the Rams and their fans have to be excited about the turnaround of their young signal caller. It wasn’t much of a start last season, but a great start this season has made 2017 look like the Year of the Goff!

Week 9 Strong Plays

Looking over Sunday’s matchup, here’s a quick rundown of a few of the lineups I am liking very much;

Jared Goff, QB;

I’m not expecting big numbers here, but I do like Goff’s matchup against the Giants. Goff has been steady this season, but not spectacular, and the Giants defense has not been good versus quarterbacks; allow 6th mos fantasy points. This could be a good bounce back week for Goff

DeMarco Murray, RB;

It has not been Murray’s year this season, as the Titan’s running back has only one 100-yard rushing game this season. Fortunately for Murray and the Titans, this week’s opponent is the Ravens; have allowed 2nd most rushing yards this season.

Devin Funchess, WR;

With Kelvin Benjamin shipped off to Buffalo, the Panthers receiver Devin Funchess is in line for a larger role and more targets this Sunday. The Falcons have been pretty good against receivers this season, but I like Funchess and believe this is an opportunity for him to step up and separate.

Jack Doyle, TE;

The Colts tight end is coming off a huge Sunday last week (12 receptions, 121 yards, and a score) and I am feeling good about his chances to continue the momentum against the Texans; allow 6th most fantasy points to opposing tight ends.
