Week 13 Diamonds in the Rough

This is the last week before the start of fantasy playoffs for most redraft leagues and it could be the last chance for some of us to play our way into the dance. If you are on the bubble and needing help, well, desperate times call for desperate measures...

QB-Trevor Siemian; the Broncos signal caller has been just awful since week 3, one of the worst fantasy quarterbacks this season (ranked 25th), but last week in relief of the injured Paxton Lynch, Siemian did play well. It was not an eyebrow raiser and sudden break-through, but for the Broncos and Siemian it’s a start. This week he’s on the road, typically not a great matchup, but it’s the Dolphins. The Phins don’t bring a lot of pressure (just 18 sacks this season) and they have allowed the most fantasy points to week opposing quarterbacks over the past 4 weeks. Don’t look for big numbers, but he could offer a safe floor.

RB-Jaquizz Rodgers; the Buccaneers will be without starter Doug Martin, so Rodgers could see more work on the early downs. He’s also an effective pass catcher, something the Packers defense has struggled with the past month allowing the 2nd most receptions (31) to opposing running backs over the last 4 weeks. Rodgers will see some work for sure, but he’ll likely split the load with Charles Simms and Peyton Barber, so his upside could be limited.

WR-Johnny Holton; the Raiders speedster is a boom or bust candidate for Week 13, but for those living on a prayer, Houlton might hear those calls. No doubt a risky play here, Holton has just 4 receptions on the year, but for 161 yards with 2 scores. The Giants defense has allowed the 8th most fantasy points to opposing receivers including 6 touchdowns over the past 4 weeks. If you’re in a bind, make a wish here.

TE-CJ Fiedorowicz; playing in only his 4th game this season, the Texans tight end saw a season high 8 targets last week. It’s a sign that his quarterback is developing some chemistry and comfort with him and heading into a week 13 matchup with the Titans (11th most fantasy points allowed to opposing TEs last 2 weeks) this could not come at a better time. Fiedorowicz is not in line for a huge day by any means, but if you’re struggling with production at the TE spot and need help CJ might provide a small spark.

What I Learned from Week 5

(Quick Takes)

There’s a Change Coming in Minnesota.

After watching the Vikings game on Monday night and in particular Quarterback Sam Bradford, a change has to be coming. Bradford just didn’t look right from the get go and was eventually replaced by backup Case Keenum. It may have been a temporary change for their week 5 matchup with Chicago, but I believe the more may end up being more permanent. Bradford is obviously not healthy and while the team has not come out with any official announcement, its obvious Monday’s attempt suffered a setback and one that could have Bradford sideline for an extended period (I believe).

The Packers may have found a running game.

While injuries are never good for any team, the injury to Packers running back Ty Montgomery may have come with a silver lining. Since Montgomery went down, the team has had a chance to look at their rookies, in particular running back Aaron Jones. Since he was inserted he’s rushed for over 170 yards and averaged almost 5.5 yards per carry. The Packers have to like what they see and what they’ve found.

Gordon could just be getting started.

The Chargers running back Melvin Gordon broke out with a huge 163 total yards and 2 touchdowns week 5 performance against the Giants. Gordon also averaged 5 yards per carry and added 6 receptions. With a week 6 matchup against the Raiders 25th ranked run defense, Gordon nmght just be getting started.

Ram’s offense struggled, but better days ahead

The Rams offense ran out of gas on Sunday scoring just 10 points after averaging 35.5 points per game through the first four weeks. We'll just chalk this one up to divisional rivalry; both of these teams know each other all too well. Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, and company could be in for a tough matchup this week against Jacksonville, but they'll bounce back with a week 7 matchup against Arizona

Deshaun Watson: "that kid is real good"

We've seen this star shine for several weeks now, so Sunday night should not have come as a surprise. Through five weeks Watson is the No.2 fantasy QB with 12 passing touchdowns (2nd most) and he leads all quarterbacks with 179 yards rushing; that kid is good.

Martin already looks good.

After having to sit out three games due to suspension, in his return to action in Week 5 the Buccaneers running back Doug Martin already looks good. Martin rushed for 74 yards and a score without missing a beat and looks ready to return to his featured back role; time to drop Jacquizz Rodgers.

Thursday Afternoon Edition

Thursday's Twitter Takes

Last week kind of an easy pick with Green Bay handling the Bears fairly easily; actually took the Packers in my survivor. Although the Pack won it was costly losing Montgomery (ribs) and Adams (concussion). Of course Rodgers was on point, but with a full quota of receivers (Nelson, Cobb, and Adams), there wasn't enough looks for Geronimo Allison to go around (whiff). Bennett did his usual cameo, but for maybe a few more yards while Montgomery's shortened evening hurt owners. Not much to speak about when it comes to the Bears. Jordan Howard (Thunder) salvaged his night with a late score. Tarik Cohen (Lightning) flickered some, and even Kendall Wright ended up being playable.

Well that was last week, so let's talk about tonight's contest;

"Mike Evans should have a big night on Thurs night against the No.32 ranked pass defense. He's definitely a Week 5 stud!" @FantsySprtsHome

The Patriots are surrending north of 300 yards passing per game and have allowed 11 receiving touchdowns in just three games. Another concerning factor is the high percentage (69.7) of completions the secondary is allowing. There's little doubt Winston and company will test the corners and attack them with his big target Mike Evans. It's hard to imagine Evans not getting into the endzone tonight at least once.

And while the Pat's defense is lacking against the pass, the Buccaneers are not far behind. Only the Patriots allow more yards passing per game, but a big factor to watch is the lack of pressure. The Bucs have only sacked opposing quarterbacks once in three games; yes once! If Brady is given time, he's like a mad scientist and will completely dissect the defense. Expect the mad doctor to go operating tonight, especially since the run game is lacking.

"Doug Martin returns to action tonight, but don't discount Jacq Rodgers. He'll still have plenty of flex appeal tonight!" @FantsySprtsHome

While the Patriots are bad against the pass, they are not much better against the run, ranked 26th. A notable stat, the Patriots also allow 5.1 yards per carry. I'm sure we're going to see Martin sprinkled into this one, but I would be surprised if Rodgers didn't log at least 12-15 carries tonight, and haul in a couple of passes.

"After seeing what Watson was able to do against this defense, Winston owners have to be salivating; Top-10 fantasy QB this week!"

Two weeks ago the Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson had a terrific game against the Patriots, passing for 300 yards and tossing two scores. Tonight the 3rd year Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston enters his matchup against the same Patriots defense with some pretty good weapons of his own. If experience counts for anything, we just may see Winston a very mobile and capable QB in his own right take his game to the next level; fantasy owners get your popcorn ready.

If numbers mean anything, the Patriots defense is going to have a rough go at it trying to slow down and stop the Buccaneers offense. That being the case, it just may be up to quarterback Tom Brady to keep his team in this one throughout and hopefully close the game on a late drive. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Brady and company will likely have to rely on his arm. Through 4 games the running game (ranked 20th in the league) has not been there averaging just 3.6 yards per carry. Brady, the No.1 fantasy QB this season, through 4 games is averaging over 38 pass attempts per game; tonight he's got a great chance at surpassing his average with ease.

Currently DeSean Jackson is ranked outside the Top-50 wide receivers with just 9 receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown. His long this season is just 32 yards; not exactly what you would expect from a burner like DJax. The Patriots secondary is going to have to account for Evans all night, giving Jackson opportunity. Jackson will also have the good fortune of attacking a secondary that has allowed 19 pass plays of 20 or more yards (3rd most in the league), including 4 pass plays of 40 yards or more (tied for 2nd most).

Saturday afternoon Edition

My Week 4 Four Horsemen + a Flex

(Bold Predictions: By the Numbers)

Time to check out our report card for last week and I have to tell you, it feels like getting a test back that you already know you didn’t do well. So let’s take a look. At quarterback we tanked with our Rivers picked. Apparently the Chargers move from San Diego to Los Angeles didn’t change a whole lot of things; three picks, no touchdowns

Who would’ve thought the Saints defense would show up in week 3 and on the road nonetheless. Running back Jonathan Stewart was basically held in check limited to just 61 total yards. Our receiver DeAndre Hopkins was busy last Sunday with 7 catches, but finishing as the No.30 fantasy WR (PPR) is not good enough. Tight end Jared Cook wasn’t far off the mark with 43 yards and score, finishing as the No.8 fantasy TE (PPR) last week. Running back Lamar Miller, our flex fared no better than Stewart, finishing with just 63 total yards. And for good measure the Steelers defense ranked 13th in fantasy last week.

Overall Grade D-

There’s no question it was a rough week, but maybe we can bounce back in a big way in Week 4;

Quarterback

It’s not been a good season thus far for picks, but I’m a gambler and I’ll play every time. This week I am riding with the rookie arm of Deshaun Watson. Ever since his debut as the starter in week 2 on Thursday night, I’ve been impressed. He had Mike Vick moves then and last week showed some grit standing toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and the Patriots. He’s still a rookie and going to make mistakes, but I love his upside when you add in his running skills and Bill O’Brien’s play-calling. This week he’ll have more success against the Titans; 20 0f 30 passing, 185 yards passing, 1 TD pass, 1 Int, 45 yards rushing, 1 rushing TD.

Running Back

If I have any real bold picks here, this one will be the boldest of the bunch. This will be Buccaneers running back Jacquizz Rodgers last dance in the spotlight (start Doug Martin returns next week) and after a less than dismal week 3 finishing with just 15 yards rushing on 5 carries he’s going to be looking to bounce back in a big way. Last week was not a good week in general for the entire offense, but fortunately for Rodgers and company the Giants roll into town. Through 3 weeks, the G-men have not been good against the run. Let’s look at the numbers; ranked last against the run, allow 4.5 yards per carry, and allow 10th most fantasy points to opposing runners. The Bucs have enough weapons to keep the G-men from stacking the box; 75 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards and a score.

Wide Receiver

Bold, maybe not, but playing the numbers yes. Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry was heavily targeted back in week two (15 targets) and followed that performance with 11 more last Sunday. His busy Sundays have yet to produce a lot of yards, 19 receptions for just 126 yards. So I am just playing the numbers on this one, Landry is getting opportunities and his week 4 matchup looks like a good one against the Saints (ranked 31st against the pass). It will be another busy Sunday for Landry; 8 receptions, 85 yards, and a touchdown.

Tight End

I’m not going to mince words here with my week 4 tight end pick. What’s the saying, hard to keep a big man down or something like that? At 6’5” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is nearly larger than life and after a hugely disappointing week 3 (just one catch), he’s bouncing back this week. You can count on Andy Reid making sure of that. It’s a great matchup against a Redskins defense that struggles against opposing tight ends; 7 catches, 75 yards receiving, a touchdown.

Flex

Over the past two weeks the Redskins rising star ball carrier Chris Thompson has been on a roll. I am a believer in the third time’s a charm. Thompson is electric in space, has great hands, and I believe Jay Gruden will game play to get the rock to him on Monday night. He’s my flex this week; 35 rushing yards, 6 catches, 55 receiving yards, and a score.

Defense: And once again we are playing a team defense this week, since we love DFS. This week I am streaming the Jaguars defense. I am not expecting a repeat of last week’s domination, especially since entering this matchup, the Jets offense is coming off a good showing. The Jets are home this Sunday, so I’d expect them to keep some of that momentum this week. I am playing the numbers here and just like the Jags defense (the No.3 overall defense, number one in sacks-13, 2nd in turnover differential) too much to think McCown and company will be able to generate a lot of yards and points.

Although he struggled in his first week back, I have to put Bell at the top of my rankings for Week 2. He’ll be featured in the short-passing game as well as the run game this Sunday against the Vikings, so what he’ll lack on the ground he will more than make up in the air.

I’ve moved the rookie Leonard Fournette way up my rankings this week. He’ll face a Titans defense that yielded 76 yards rushing (on 18 carries) to Marshawn Lynch a week ago, but Fournette will get more than just 18 chances.

I’m going to buy into the Chiefs rookie running back Kareem Hunt this week, but I’m not going overboard. I have him ranked 9th this week, going against a pretty good Eagles front, he’s a dual threat and will stay productive out of the backfield.

I’ve dropped DeMarco Murray a few slots; not thrilled with his matchup this week against the Jaguars defense. This one will be close throughout, so Murray should see even touches to salvage the day.

The Saints and Patriots could be locked up in a shootout this Sunday and while it’s hard to figure who’s going to see the majority of snaps, I favor Mark Ingram (ranked 15th this week). The Saints rookie Alvin Kamara actually saw more snaps in the backfield than Ingram did last week, but the veteran was considerably more productive; even with Adrian Peterson’s presence I expect Ingram to lead the way.

I have said before that I like Jamaal Charles over CJ Anderson, but until the Broncos coaching staff commits to giving JC an extended look, Anderson will carry the reigns. Anderson was successful in week 1 totaling 81 yards on the ground on 20 carries and could see similar work this week. Charles will have to be patient.

Lastly, a notable insertion at the 23rd spot is Buccaneers running back Jacquizz Rodgers. Last season when Doug Martin went down, Rodgers was a strong fill-in averaging better than 4 yards per carry. He’ll be at home this week against the Bears and should see plenty of opportunity.

Going to start with the top. No quarterback has been as hot as the Falcons Matt Ryan, who leads all fantasy scorers (standard scoring) this season. With the Falcons playing host to the leagues number one run defense (Packers), expect Ryan and company to take to the air. And of course Ryan's favorite target is the leagues leading receiver Julio Jones (830 receiving yards). Ryan and Jones should put up some hefty numbers on Sunday making all fantasy owners proud.

The Broncos are home this week playing host to the visiting Chargers. With running back CJ Anderson out, rookie running back Devontae Booker will take the reins. Last week Booker totaled 83 yards on 17 carries and could see as many or more touches this week against a Chargers defense that allows the 6th most fantasy points to opposing running back.

The Browns have been awful this season allowing the 4th most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers and with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick back under center, wide receiver Brandon Marshall will see plenty of balls in his direction. In the six previous games Fitz started, Marshall has averaged 10 targets per game. He's likely to see at least that many on Sunday.

Tight end Greg Olsen (60 targets this season) has a tough matchup with the Cardinals on Sunday, but being one of quarterback Cam Newton's favorite targets he's going to see plenty of chances on Sunday.

The Broncos lost on the road to the Chargers back in week 6, so no question revenge will be on their minds when they play host this Sunday. You can expect Broncos Defensive Coordinator Wad Phillips to turn up the heat on quarterback Philip Rivers and the Chargers offense.

That's my take.

Week 7 Fantasy Notes & Predictions

Tomorrow, week 7 kicks off early with another London matchup featuring the Rams and the Giants. I'm pretty sure Todd Gurley owners are starting to get a little restless. In six games this season Gurley has yet to top 100 yards rushing, but a new continent could be the difference tomorrow. The Giants have been pretty good this season against the run, but they do allow more than 3.8 yards per carry this season and have allowed the 11th most fantasy points to opposing running backs over the past two weeks. Perhaps maybe some jet-lag or overseas distractions could kick in and take their toll as well. With that said, I like Gurley to finally top the century mark and reach the endzone.

The Falcons will be playing host to the visiting Chargers and for quarterback Matt Ryan that will likely mean his 5th game with more than 300 yards passing in seven starts. Ryan leads all players in fantasy scoring and has been huge this season with 2,075 yards passing and 15 touchdowns in six games. The Chargers secondary have had their struggles this season allowing the 10th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks and nearly 300 yards passing per game. Tomorrow could be another long Sunday on the road for the Bolts defense. With Ryan throwing for a bunch tomorrow, fantasy owners should keep their eyes on wide receiver Mohamed Sanu; could be a nice day for the Falcon wideout.

With Redskins starting tight end Jordan Reed expected to be sidelined again this week, fantasy owners looking for a plug and play option should consider Vernon Davis. Davis will get the start and facing the Lions defense he'll have a good shot at scoring against a defense that has allowed the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing tight ends and 7 touchdowns (most in the league). Davis is likely a boom or bust option for redraft leagues, but has great value in DFS.

The Buccaneers return from their bye to face the visiting Niners and with Doug Martin still sidelined, running back Jacquizz Rodgers will get the start. Rodgers carried the load in week 5 with 30 rushing attempts for 101 yards and added 5 receptions for another 28 yards receiving. This week he matches up against the Niners defense that has allowed 3rd most fantasy  points to opposing running backs, including 9 rushing touchdowns (2nd most in the league). Rodgers is a borderline RB1/RB2 this week and is in line for another productive Sunday. He's also a great value play in DFS.

That's my take for Week 7.

MNF (on Saturday) Quick Takes

The Lions have little or no running game to speak of heading into this week 16 matchup with the Falcons expect to see a lot of Matthew Stafford (which has become the norm). Stafford is averaging 50 pass attempts in each of his last four starts and is very likely to exceed that plateau tonight. Despite the Falcons stingy ways versus the pass (just 13 touchdowns allowed this season), it will be tough to keep Stafford and Megatron out of the end zone. Stafford is a reach this week, but is still a better option than Flacco, Dalton, or Freeman.

Megatron remains the one constant in the Lions lineup week in and week out. Last week Johnson pulled down 10 passes for more than 120 yards, but was kept out of the end zone. The Falcons secondary ranks 17th against the pass; expect better numbers today from Megatron and at least one trip to pay dirt.

The Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan leads a group that even at 12-2, they are still fighting for respect from the rest of the league. Ryan is coming off an impressive win and performance against the Giants last week passing for 270 yards and tossing three touchdowns and will likely need a similar performance and win tonight to fight off the critics again. The Lions are no walk in the park, but Ryan has too many weapons to exploit the Lions 11th ranked secondary. Ryan has been on and off at times this season, but under the light and in the dome(s) he’s golden for fantasy owners; start him.

The Falcons running back Michael Turner is coming off a strong 52 yards rushing performance against the Giants last week. The Lions rank 18th against the run and though they allow the 15th fewest fantasy points to running backs, the defense has surrendered 11 rushing touchdowns this season. The Falcons should move the ball well in the air and could set up some easy scores for Turner. He’s not a top-10 start this week, but he’s a worthy fantasy start for championship weekend.

The Falcons and Lions will meet in primetime on this Saturday night and wide receiver Roddy White is a go. White is Mr. Monday night, the last time the Falcons played during the Monday night broadcast was back in week 2, he tallied 8 catches for 102 yards and a score. White has always been big in the Falcons passing attack and tonight should be more of the same. Facing an uninspired and underachieving Lions team and secondary tonight, expect White to play big with much more on the line. He’s a solid start for fantasy owners.

more Starts & Sits…

Jaquizz Rodgers is a risky start, he’s been on and off, but has yet to produce the type of game worthy of starting except in custom and PPR leagues.

Tony Shceffler should be a very good start, but too many drops and inconsistent play make him a shaky start. Nonetheless he does offer a higher ceiling, with limited options he may be worth a flier.

Julio Jones has too much potential and playmaking ability to sit. He’s the very definition of hit and miss, but owners can’t afford to see this freakish talent.

The Lions basically offer a committee rotation at running back with none of the options standing out from the others, avoid this backfield if possible.

Turner Limited, Rodgers Could See More Action

The Falcons starting running back Michael Turner has been limited all week in practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday. Turner, who has remained relatively ineffective most of the 2012 campaign, could lose some touches this week should he even play. Back up Jacquizz Rodgers has slowly become more a part of the weekly game plan averaging 9 touches a contest over the team’s last three games. Rodgers has shown great productivity in his limited role averaging 65 yards of offense in the same span. Rodgers season high for carries is 10, something we could very well see him match against the Cardinals 23^rd ranked run defense with Turner ailing. Rodgers is a risky play in normal 10-team leagues, but in deeper formats he could be a sneaky sleeper.

Murray Doubtful for Sunday, Time for More Felix the Back

The Cowboys will likely not have the services of running back DeMarco Murray on Sunday, opening the door for back up Felix Jones. The Cowboys back up runner says he is feeling good and will have a great opportunity to show just how much agains the Browns 26^th ranked run defense. Jones is averaging less than four yards per carry this season and has scored just two rushing touchdowns in four starts this season. The Browns are allowing 4.3 yards per carry and have allowed only 7 rushing touchdowns this season, but they are giving up the 11^th most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Jones has a good matchup this week and looks to be a good flex option in deeper formats.

Tom Terrific Set to Shine on Sunday Once Again

With the emergence of a couple of youngsters and the return of an old foe, quarterback Tom Brady has seemingly become lost in the shuffle by normal standards. Despite the less press he’s been receiving in fantasy circles and the regular media, Brady has been terrific in 2012; 18 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 293 yards passing per game. With the Colts up next, Brady looks set to shine once again. The Colts rank 15^th against the pass and allow the 13^th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, numbers that figure to rise after Sunday’s tilt. Brady has also been on fire as of late averaging 24 completions, 265 yards-plus passing per game over his last three starts; he’s also tossed 8 touchdowns without an interception. He’s a must start and facing a strong Colts passing game, Brady could post some big numbers this week to set the pace.

There are certainly no-brainers and must plays up and down the boards this week, but if your lineup is lacking a few of those options these are some players worth consideration in week 10.

Week 10 fantasy help;

Jonathan Dwyer, RB
The Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer returned to a full practice on Friday and looks set to return to action on Monday night. Dwyer would seem to be the favorite to start coming off his two 100-yard game performances, but even if he ends up just splitting expect him to be very effective against the Chiefs 23rd ranked run defense. The Chiefs also allow the 6th most fantasy points to running backs.

Kenny Britt, WR
The Titans big receiver Kenny Britt has been getting healthier each week and after completing a couple of days of full participation in practice he looks ready for Sunday. Britt has been mostly quiet this season and a non-factor, but facing the Dolphins 30th ranked pass defense this Sunday could be his coming out party. The Dolphins surrender the 4th most fantasy points to receivers this season and it looks like Britt will have quarterback Jake Locker under center this week; could the stars be aligning?

Jacquizz Rodgers, RB
It seems anytime you face the Saints defense, your skill players have an opportunity to play big. When the Falcons meet the Saints on Sunday running back Jacquizz Rodgers will have a chance to test that theory. The Saints defense ranks dead last in the league and allow the most fantasy points to running backs. Rodgers has gradually become more a part of the offense this season and could see plenty of extra work on Sunday; the more work, the bigger the points.

Greg Olsen, TE
The Broncos defense simply struggles with opposing tight ends. Last week the Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham post season highs in catches (6) and yards receiving (108) against the Broncos defense. This week the Panthers tight end Greg Olsen will get his shot at the Denver defense. Olsen is second on the team with 53 targets this season, but has yet to post a 100-yard receiving game. The Broncos defense allows the 4th most points to tight ends, so Olsen chances of a big game look good.

Danario Alexander, WR
The Chargers newest addition to their passing attack is wide receiver Danario Alexander. The former Ram receiver made his debut last week and wasted little time getting involved recording three catches for 61 yards. Alexander is already on a few radars this week with the team planning on getting him more involved. And with the Bucs next up on the schedule Alexander looks poised to make some noise. The big 6’5” receiver will face the Bucs secondary that has allowed the 3rd most fantasy points to wide receiver and he should have lots of success.
