Bad Weather is Good News for Spiller
The Bills running back CJ Spiller (830 yards rushing in 2012) could be looking at a heavy load today with the weather forecast predicting rain and wind. Spiller has been the most consistent back in the Bills backfield and will take the lead reins today. Facing the Jaguars 29th ranked run defense, Spiller is looking at possibly his best game of the season; a must-start today.

Rodgers Set for a Big Game with a Full Arsenal
The Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (28 touchdowns in 2012) will enjoy the return of wide receiver Greg Jennings today. Although Jennings may be brought along slowly, the Vikings defense will still need to account for him along with Nelson and Cobb. Rodgers will be looking to bounce back after a sub-par game against the Giants last week; in his last two matchups against the Vikings Rodgers has torched them for 585 yards and 7 touchdowns. Today should be just another Sunday slinging the rock for Rodgers.

Thomas Looking for a Breakout Day
The Broncos wide receiver Demaryrius Thomas is having a fine 2012 campaign, but today could be particularly huge for the playmaker. Thomas and Manning have connected six times for scores this season, a number that could grow exponentially when the two square off against the Bucs today. The Buccaneers secondary is ranked last in the league against the pass and have allowed the most fantasy points to wide receivers (including 11 touchdowns); analysis, big game for Thomas.

Clark Looking to take Advantage of Broncos D
The Buccaneers tight end Dallas Clark has become one of quarterback Josh Freeman’s trusted go-to targets and after a slow start this season, Clark’s numbers are starting to rise. Those number should continue to rise even more today facing the Broncos secondary that has struggled against tight ends in recent weeks. The Broncos allow the most fantasy points to tight ends making Clark (31 receptions and 3 touchdowns in 2012) a top 10 fantasy play for week 13.

Suicide Fantasy Football

Week 9

My SFFL fantasy team has fallen off the pace a bit the past couple of weeks with a couple of sub-par performances, but this week I am looking to improve mightily with some big performances from some big names and a strong showing from a few lesser known. My line-up leads off with a couple of notables (Michael Vick & Brandon Marshall), but also consists for a few intriguing names where I really like their matchups….


My Line-up 

Quarterback:
Despite the ups and downs and the turmoil that exists within the Eagles organization, I still believe Michael Vick is an exceptional athlete with plenty of playmaking ability and on Monday night he’ll have a great opportunity to exhibit plenty. The Saints defense has been awful this season and they have allowed the most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season. Vick and the Eagles need a big game and this Monday night is lining up to be their best opportunity.

Running Backs:
In the backfield I am starting the Lions running back Mikel Leshoure this week. The Lions are on the road to face Jacksonville and the Jaguars run defense has not been good against the run this season. The Jags are ranked 25th versus the run and have allowed 8 rushing touchdowns this season; they also allow the 4th most fantasy points to running backs.

My other ball carrier for week 9 is Felix Jones. The Cowboys running back has been running on empty it seems and with DeMarco Murray likely to return to the lineup sooner rather than later, this may be one of his last starts this season. I am not looking for a big output from Felix Sunday night, but the Cowboys need to make a big statement here and will need a solid effort from the ground game. The Falcons defense has not been great against the run this season ranked 26th, so I like for Jones to carry the load and be productive. 

Wide Receivers:
It’s time to call on one of the big dawgs this season, the Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall. the Bears are on the road this week, but for Marshall and company they meet the Tennessee Titans; ranked 29th against the pass. Marshall is off to a great start this season and has a great chance to improve his numbers on Sunday, the Titans are giving up the 15th most fantasy points to wide receiver this season, including 17 touchdowns.

My other wide out for week 9 is going to be DeSean Jackson. It what looks to be a shoot-out on Monday night, Jackson will be lining up against the Saints defense that is allowing the most fantasy points to wide receivers this season. The game will be fast on turf and could be filled with lots of big plays.

Tight End:
The Buccaneers offense, in particular their passing game has shown lots of life over the past couple of weeks, and tight end Dallas Clark has become fantasy relevant again. Clark has quietly become more involved as he and his quarterback Josh Freeman continue to develop a good rapport. In his first five games Clark was targeted 15 times, he has been targeted 9 times in the past two. Although Clark has yet to put up big numbers this season, he is facing the Raiders 21st ranked pass defense that allows the 11th most fantasy points to tight ends.

Place Kicker:
The Ravens have a very favorable matchup this week on the road against the Browns. Their offense should have plenty of success moving the ball, but could stall a few times in the red zone. I like Ravens kicker Justin Tucker to score big points with several kicks and several extra points.

Team Defense:
With my choices becoming more limited each week, one matchup I like is the Lions defense on the road against the Jaguars. The Jags offense is ranked last in the league, and with no MJD this looks too good to pass. The Jags have really struggled with the pass this season, ranked 32nd and 20 sacks allowed this season and have allowed the 6th most fantasy points versus opposing defenses.

Starts

With quarterback Josh Freeman playing at such a high level of late, it’s hard not to like his Week 8 matchup against the Vikings this week. Even though the Buccaneers are on the road, Freeman has a nice matchup against a Vikings defense that is ranked 11th in the league versus the pass and has allowed the 10th most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Freeman has passed for over 1,000 yards and tossed seven touchdowns in his last three starts and looks primed to continue his hot hand tonight. 

The Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin has been Mr. Everything for the offense this season, leading the team with 53 receptions and 646 scrimmage yards. Last week Harvin was held in check by a stingy Cardinals secondary, but that all could change tonight against the Buccaneers. The Bucs allow the 9th most fantasy points to wide receivers this season and Percy has managed to find the end-zone three times in his last three games; look for a productive evening from the Vikings playmaker. Last season in their lone matchup against the Bucs, Harvin tallied 7 grabs for 76 yards.

With the awakening of the Bucs passing game over the past several weeks, tight end Dallas Clark is suddenly relevant again in fantasy. Clark is coming off his best and busiest performance this season. In week 7 Clark was targeted 6 times, snagging five balls for 51 yards and a score against the Cardinals. Fantasy owners could be licking their chops with Clark set to face the Vikings tonight. The Vikings defense has allowed the 8th most fantasy points to opposing tight ends making Clark an attractive option for week 8.

Sits

The Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder is coming off a horrendous passing performance in week 7 versus the Cardinals. Last week Ponder passed for just 58 yards completing just 8 passes. While no one expects his numbers to be quite as bad tonight against the Bucs, his prospect of playing well does not look good. The Bucs 31st ranked pass defense has allowed 11th fewest fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks. Owners can expect a lot more yards than 58 this week, but finding the end zone tonight could be difficult; especially with AP in the red zone.

The Bucs running back Doug Martin has been consistent the past two weeks averaging over 120 scrimmage yards per game. Facing a couple of soft defenses versus the run the past two games, Martin will be lining up against the leagues number 11 ground stopper. The Vikings have also been very stingy in fantasy allowing running back the 4th fewest points. If you own Martin you may be faced with having to start him tonight, but just be sure to taper your expectations; it could be a long night.

The Most Notable Fantasy Players of 2010

I am just continuing with my takes on some of 2010s’ most notable fantasy players. These are the studs that raised eyebrows, caught our attention, and will be part of the chatter come fantasy draft 2011.

QB-Matt Ryan
The Falcons third year quarterback really came of age in 2010 passing for over 3,700 yards, throwing 28 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. His 91.0 passer rating along with his other significant passing numbers (yards, TDs) including completion percentage were all career highs. Ryan raised the level of his play this past season and has clearly taken a huge step toward the top tier of fantasy quarterbacks in league. He’s a top 10 gunslinger in 2011.

QB-Kyle Orton
The Bronco’s signal caller had a breakout 2010 season in his own right. Orton was well on his way to setting career highs in yards passing, touchdowns and passer rating if not for injuries and a sudden change of gears at the end of the regular season. Orton finished the season having started just 13 games, had he started all sixteen he could have easily posted some huge fantasy numbers. With Tebow part of the “starting quarterback in Denver” conversation and talks of trade, Orton’s stock value will remain on the decline. Fantasy owners will have to re-evaluate once the camp opens and we see what the plan is with Orton.

TE-Marcedes Lewis
Last season the Jaguars’tight end finally came of age as a real primary pass receiving threat, especially in the red-zone. Lewis set career high in receptions (58), yards (700), and led the club with 10 touchdown grabs (ranked tied for 1st in the league for TE’s). He also finished the season as a top five fantasy tight end. He will definitely be valued much higher in 2011 than he was last summer; with his size and skill Lewis is a legit top 10 fantasy tight end.

TE-Rob Gronkowski
The Patriots traded their deep threat receiver Randy Moss in the early parts of the 2010 season and found a star in their rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski. The rookie was even expected to be their number one pass receiving tight end, but by year’s end he was playing like it. Gronkowski finished his 1st season catching 42 balls for 546 yards and 10 touchdowns (tied for the most touchdowns for TE’s). With the Patriots loving their two tight end sets, Gronkowski shouldn’t have too much trouble replicating these numbers in 2011; his catches and yards were a little down for fantasy numbers, but he’s still a top 15 fantasy tight end.

TE-Jacob Tamme
Another player that turned a few heads in 2010 was the Colts 3rd year tight end Jacob Tamme. The Colts back up emerged from the unknown when starter Dallas Clark went down with a season ending injury. Clark is a great talent at the position, but the kid (Tamme) did an admirable job filling for the injured veteran. Tamme caught 67 balls for 631 yards and scored four times. Tamme is now on the map and his stock has risen, but with Clark expected to return at some point next season it’s not a stock worth investing heavily. Tammeis more than a capable backup, but that’s exactly what it looks like he’ll be in 2011; he’s a late round fantasy pickup for now.

Manning and the Colts Reach the Dance

It wasn’t by design, but the Colts made it back to the NFL post season for an NFL record ninth straight time with the 23-20 win over the Titans on Sunday. The Colts have had their ups and downs along with quarterback Peyton Manning who struggled through one of his most turnover prone seasons (18 turnovers in 2010).

Manning carries a lot of weight on the field for the Colts offense, whether they succeed or fail, but no one can argue that this has been one of his most challenging seasons with the flurry of injuries that have hit the offense. The Colts have seen players like Anthony Gonzales, Austin Collie, and Dallas Clark fall by the way side to injury, but Manning continues to pull the trigger and bring others like Pierre Garcon (67 receptions), Blair White (five touchdowns), and Jacob Tamme (67 receptions) to the forefront; even names like Dominic Rhodes have resurfaced.

The 2010 season has not been the best for Manning and the Colts (10-6), but once again they have secured a spot in the Big Dance with their seventh AFC South title in eight seasons. Unfortunately for the rest of the AFC, they will have to worry about Peyton Manning this post season.

The Sheriff (Manning) has struggled this season some with ball security, but the post season is a whole other ball game. Last season in two home games Peyton was sharp completing 67 percent of his passes while throwing five touchdowns with one interception; including a three touchdown an 377 passing yard effort against the New York Jets (their opponents this coming Saturday).

The Jets will be in town (Lucas Oil Stadium) on Saturday and with the Sheriff on duty they had better be ready or it could be another round-up for Manning and company as they try to get back to the Big Show once again.

Let’em Ride

Week 13 marks the final regular season matchup for most head-to-head fantasy leagues and it also means there will be some key matchups that could have huge implications on division races and fantasy post-season chances. These four may not clinch any titles for you this week, but this is definitely a week you’ll want these guys in your lineup (if you have any).

Like “the four winds of the earth” these fantasy studs are going to be riding high in week thirteen taking no prisoners and leaving no defense unturned upside down.

Quarterback:
The St. Louis Rams are not enjoying one of their best seasons this year, but it’s been a hue step in the right direction. And as luck would have it improved play especially at the quarterback position has them sitting on top of the NFC West and talking playoffs. This is quite a bit more than the team imagined when it drafted quarterback Sam Bradford out of Oklahoma last spring, but there’s no question his steady has been a big part of why the Rams are sitting where they are. In 11 games Bradford has passed for 2,466 yards and thrown17 touchdowns to just nine interceptions; better than that he has 11 touchdowns and one pick in his last six starts. With a dependable ball carrier (Steven Jackson) lining up in the backfield Bradford has been able to operate with great success this season, despite losing his two best weapons (Avery & Calyton) to injury. This Sunday he gets the Cardinals shaky secondary (ranked 25th against the pass) and an opportunity to bring his club back to .500 and remain atop the West. Bradford struggle some in their first matchup this season way back in week on. This time around the Cards will be seeing a different Bradford; a much more composed and mature quarterback with the savvy to throw the pill. Bradford is coming off his best game as a Ram throwing three touchdowns and passing for more than 300 yards. This Sunday may be an encore performance.
(My Prediction: 22 of 36 passing, 255 yards, two touchdowns)

Running Back:
Since the air started getting colder and the season started getting a little longer, it seems the Chicago Bears are now rolling out an old brand of smashmouth football. In the past two weeks the Bears have remained grounded and just pounded the ball an average of 28 times for 110 yards per game. With the focus shifting of late to the ground game running back Matt Forte has become more instrumental averaging 107 yards on the ground his past two games. With the team traveling to Detriot, Forte returns to the motor city where he is averaging 113 yards per game in his two career appearances at Ford Field. With the Bears leaning more on the ground game, I am expecting another solid game from Forte who also has 34 receptions and seven total touchdowns this season.
(My Prediction: 22 carries, 105 yards rushing, 4 receptions, 20 yards receiving, one touchdown)

Wide Receiver:
The Bronco’s wide receiver Brandon Lloyd has been one of the biggest surprises not only to fantasy owners, but the NFL as well. Lloyd was with the Broncos a year ago, but played in just two games. This season not only does he find himself on the field staring in seven of the team’s 11 games, but he is leading the entire league with over 1,100 yards receiving; quite the turnaround. After 12 weeks into the season his turnaround is not fluke and this week he looks to add to his career numbers; 58 receptions, 1,122 yards, 9 touchdowns (all career highs). This week Lloyd will face a 24th ranked Chiefs pass defense that has been victimized by the big play (40 yards or more) nine times this season; it could be a big day for the Bronco receiver.
(My Prediction: 8 receptions, 155 yards, one touchdown)

Tight End:
When the Colts lost their star tight end Dallas Clark, there were a lot of many worried Peyton Manning fantasy owners. Since Clark went down a new name in Indy has risen; Jacob Tamme. The back up tight end has stepped in and has done an admirable job trying to fill the mighty shoes of the great Dallas Clark. One key factor to Tamme’s immediate success has been the trust of Manning in his new tight end. Since taking over duties at the tight end spot since week 8, Tamme has been targeted 56 times, second only to Reggie Wayne’s 59. Tamme has also made the most of the opportunity catching 38 of those passes thrown to him for 364 yards and three scores. His numbers lead the team in all three categories since week 8. This Sunday Tamme will be lining up against the Cowboys 22nd ranked pass defense that have struggled with opposing tight ends in recent weeks; expect big things from Tamme.
(My Prediction: 9 receptions, 105 yards, one touchdown)

FSH: SUNDAY MORNING GAMETIME

Sunday Morning Gametime

The 2010 season has arrived and with the first game in the books, football fans get set for the opening Sunday and full slate of 13 games today. The Thursday night game was anything, but a barn-burner. It may have lacked some of the excitement we have come to expect from the NFL, but it was never short of drama.

Not quite a Favre-like performance left the Vikings on the short end of the victory stick, while the Saints and Drew Brees simply marched into the new season with the same step they ended their Superbowl run over seven months ago.

Favre and the Vikings will be looking hard over the next few weeks to try and solve their offensive woes and improve a passing game that was simply lacking any real playmaking threats. With a less than 100% Percy Harvin (missed a lot of training camp) and an injured Sidney Rice, the Vincent Jackson sweepstakes could be just the ticket.

Sunday Games:

The Thursday night lack-luster display was just a taste of what football fans have been waiting for since February, but don’t expect today’s games to be anything less than mouth-watering and lip-smacking good.

13 games are slated for the opening Sunday with a classic divisional matchup encore featuring the Cowboys and the new-look Redskins. Romo and company will be traveling to D.C. to meet the Redskins in tonight’s finale, but

The Bengals have added a few wrinkles to their lineup this season with the signing of wide receiver Terrell Owens, but against the Patriots (ranked 13^th against the run in 2009) their biggest key could be running back Cedric Benson. Benson finished last season with 392 yards rushing in his last four starts and will anchor the team’s ground game in 2010. Another player to watch will be the Bengals rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham who could get lost in the shuffle with defenses paying more attention to T.O. and Ochocinco.

There won’t be any new surprises in Houston today with a typical AFC South shootout on order for today’s matchup between the Colts and Texans. Tight end Dallas Clark is healthy and back in the line-up, so along with the usual cast fantasy owners can expect a productive day. Even with a healthy defense, there will be little chance of the Colts slowing down Texan’s wide receiver Andre Johnson. Rookie running back Arian Foster could see a good day on the ground against the Colts 24^th ranked run defense (in 2009).

Denver has a new look this season without stud receiver Brandon Marshall (traded) and his absence could open the door for a more productive season for running back Knowshon Moreno. Despite the lack of playmakers on the outside, quarterback Kyle Orton could still put up respectable numbers from under center. He’s not going to turn any heads, but he’s got great command of the offense’s short passing game.

Taking a little peek ahead at Monday night, in Baltimore the Raven’s offense has been given a huge face-lift and upgrade with some key off-season signings and a last minute addition. The arrival of wide receiver’s Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmanzadeh will instantly make Joe Flacco a more appealing fantasy option and productive NFL quarterback. The upgrade in the passing game will also stretch the defenses and give running back Ray Rice more room in 2010 to operate in the run game.

Notables;

There’s will be plenty to watch today and even more to talk about, but for now I leave you with a couple of notables that I will be keeping my eye on today…..

In St.Louis, even with a rookie quarterback calling the signals, I am expecting to see good things from wide receiver Laurent Robinson.

If the Browns can give quarterback Jake Delhomme time, I don’t think it will take him long to find the team’s leading wide out Mohamed Massaquoi. Running back Jerome Harrison will interest, at least for a day against the leagues worst run defense a year ago.

It might be the Lions they are playing, but my focus won’t be on quarterback Jay Cutler, but rather running back Matt Forte who has had success on the ground in the past. On the other side, I expect a strong showing from wide receiver Calvin Johnson who will give the Bear’s secondary fits all afternoon.

With a lot of focus going to Eagle’s receiver DeSean Jackson, it’s Jeremy Maclin who could come up with a big game as well. A much bigger target with great speed as well, Maclin could be a hot item in the Eagle’s passing game today. In the same game Packer’s wide receiver Greg Jennings won’t disappoint fantasy owners, but a surprise play could be third year receiver James Jones.

There’s going to be plenty of action today and much for fantasy owners to cheer about, when the games kickoff in under two hours who will you be watching?

Ready to Make the Grab

Top Fantasy wide receivers:

Everyone already knows about both of the Johnson brothers, Andre and Calvin. Andre has been the giant the past two seasons in Houston leading the NFL in receiving yards with over 1,500 in each. In Detroit, Calvin enters his fourth season with 21 career touchdowns under his belt and a blossoming strong-armed quarterback ready to elevate “Megatron” to fantasy royalty.

As I review my top twenty for 2010, the most notable receivers on this list are Sidney Rice who I might have ranked higher had he not gone down for at least six weeks. Vincent Jackson is in a similar spot poised to sit out significant time, although at the time of this posting there are rumors suggesting he could land in Minnesota. If VJ gets traded to the Vikings, an early risky pick for fantasy owners could pay heavy dividends in the second half of the fantasy season.

I rate Terrell Owens higher than Ochocinco, simply because this preseason TO has been targeted more and looked more reliable as the possession type-receiver. Also his size has to make him a favorite in the Red Zone.

My Watch list…

In Indy, fantasy owners need to keep an eye on wide receiver Pierre Garcon. Garcon came on last season finishing strong in the post season with 21 receptions, including two for scores. With so many other weapons around him, he is one that is ready to breakout this season with a big year.

Very similar in Green Bay is third year wide out James Jones. Jones battled through injuries last season, but when healthy showed by play potential. With Jennings and Driver grabbing much well deserved attention, Jones could quietly blossom this season.

A third wide out that I will be watching closely is the Eagles second year receiver Jeremy Maclin. With DeSean Jackson grabbing the headlines with his big plays last season, defenses will be rolling their coverage in his direction often (but they better watch out). As a rookie last season, Maclin caught 56 passes for nearly 800 yards. The Eagles have enough weapons in the passing game for Maclin to see a lot of single coverage; could be a sleeper pick in 2010.

A last notable mention for what it’s worth is the Ram’s wide receiver Laurent Robinson. The Ram’s wide out started out looking very strong on a weak offense last season, before going down in the third game. He is healthy this season and rookie quarterback Sam Bradford looks more than capable to get him the ball. He may not be a top10 this season, but Robinson could be worth a flyer this season.

Without question 2009 was the year of the long ball with 12 quarterbacks throwing no fewer than 26 touchdowns. Names like Manning, Schaub, Brees, and Favre head the list of today's NFL gunslingers.

And while many fans were being entertained with the big pass plays, players like Chris Johnson and Steven Jackson were churning out the yards on the ground. At 31, Jets running back Thomas Jones showed little slow down with another solid campaign that included 14 rushing touchdowns.

In 14 games this past season, the Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker had a memorable year catching 123 passes, while the Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson gave fans a lot to cheer about with so many big plays in 2009; Jackson had 10 plays of over 40 yards.

Looking back on 2009 there were quite a few performers that stood out from the rest. Here are my picks for the Studs in 2009.

(Quarterback)

Drew Brees (Saints) turned in another big season passing for over 4,000 yards for the fourth straight season. The Saints passer would finish the 2009 campaign with 4,388 yards passing and he would also completed 70 percent of his throws. Brees led the league for the second straight season with 34 touchdown passes.

(Running back)

Chris Johnson was by far the most dominant running back in 2009 turning in a breakout sophomore season with 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns. Johnson was solid in his rookie season, but the versatile back exploded this past season. Johnson became just the sixth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards and added 50 receptions and another 500 yards receiving. His 2,509 total yards also set a record for most yards from scrimmage in a season.

There were a few notable receivers that had a big year in 2009, but none more than the Texans Andre Johnson. The fantasy beast had another 1,500 yards receiving to go along with nine touchdown reception. Johnson also caught 101 passes in 2009; it was the third time in his career with over 100 receptions in a season.

The Colts did not lack any firepower in the passing game this past season. One of their best weapons was tight end Dallas Clark. The sure handed receiver had his best season in his career with career highs in receptions (100) and yards (1,106). Clark also posted 10 touchdown receptions.

Noteworthy

Brett Favre not only turned in a notable season for any young gun under center, but at age 40 he defied father-time with 4,202 yards passing and 28 touchdowns to lead the Vikings to the NFC Championship.

Running back Ray Rice proved that he can be a versatile featured back in the Raven's offense. Rice rushed for over 1,300 yards, caught 78 passes, and scored eight touchdowns to lead the Ravens.

The Bronco's wide receiver Brandon Marshall showed star power again in 2009 with over 100 receptions and 10 touchdowns catches to lead Denver.

The Niner's passing offense showed more than a pulse in 2009 with the re-emergence of tight end Vernon Davis as a viable receiving threat. Davis turned in career highs with 78 catches, 965 yards receiving, and a league high 13 touchdowns.
