Sunday Night Game Notes

Scouting the Combine

The annual football combine is less than a week away and the importance of the annual event for fantasy owners is getting to know their rookie class. With more than 300 participants expected to part take in the five day event, it’s going to be tough to sort through the 2010 class, but here are some of the notable collegiate arms that will be at the Combine and their numbers from 2010;

Passing yards

Ryan Mallet-Arkansas, 3,869 yards passing, 32 touchdowns (ranked 5th)

David’s Daily Digest

The Most Notable Fantasy Players of 2011

The 2010 season produced a long list of new names to the fantasy world, names that owners will be coveting greatly come fantasy draft day. These are just more the studs we’ll be talking about on fantasy draft day 2011.

RB-Peyton Hillis (Browns)
The Browns not only found a starter in running back Peyton Hillis, they found a superstar. Hillis was merely a back-up and special teamer in Denver, but did show some flash back in 2008 when given the opportunity. This past season he was handed the reins and ran with it he did. Hillis finished the 2010 season with 1,177 yards on the ground and 11 rushing touchdowns. More of a power runner he still averaged 4.4 yards per carry and caught 61 balls for another 477 yards receiving. With numbers like he produced this past season, Hillis appears to be a strong top 10 fantasy candidate in 2011.

WR-Mike Williams (Seahawks)
The Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll rediscovered a college jewel and brought him to Seattle when he signed wide receiver Mike Williams. Maybe all he needed was a little motivation, but whatever it was, Carroll found the formula and Williams was reborn. The Seahawks wide receiver bounced back from the abyss in 2010 to snag 65 balls for 735 yards and two scores. Not bad for someone who had not caught a pass in over two seasons. His numbers weren’t spectacular, but he played well enough at times for folks to take notice; he could be a top 25 fantasy receiver in 2011 (especially PPR leagues).

WR-Hakeem Nicks (Giants)
The Giants 2nd year receiver exploded in 2010 with a huge season catching 79 passes for 1,052 yards receiving, and 11 touchdowns; led the team in all three categories. Nicks was a big time play-maker last season; with great hands and great speed he can only get better. Nicks will undoubtedly and rightfully fall into the top 10 for wide receivers in this summer’s fantasy drafts.

RB-Mike Tolbert (Chargers)
The Chargers less notable, but more productive running back Mike Tolbert earned his way onto the fantasy radar last season. With rookie Ryan Matthews banged up for quite a bit of the season, Tolbert was given more opportunity to carry the rock and he did it well. Tolbert was an effective running option in San Diego tallying 182 carries for the season. He also collected 735 yards on the ground and scored 11 touchdowns. He’ll see a slight decrease in touches next season if Matthews stays healthy, but he’s still fantasy worthy in deep leagues.

TE-Aaron Hernandez (Patriots)
The Patriots tight end enjoyed a pretty good rookie campaign, but it was one that could have been much more productive had he remained healthy. Hernandez played in 14 games last season recording 45 receptions for 563 yards and six touchdowns. With a healthy campaign in 2011 and Tom Brady tossing the pill, Hernandez should be a possible top 10 option for fantasy owners.

WR-Mike Williams (Buccaneers)
The other Mike Williams over in Tampa was not too bad himself last season. In fact the rookie was sensational catching 65 balls for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. These numbers were not quite the level of the elite, but they were more than good enough to have owners looking at him much earlier in fantasy drafts this summer. With an up and coming quarterback (Josh Freeman), Williams looks like he can be a very good fantasy player in 2011.

FSH NOTEBOOK: SUNDAY MORNING GAMETIME

January 2nd, 2011, Sunday
Sunday Morning Gametime

Today’s injury notes

The Eagles are looking more and more like they will sit quarterback Michael Vick today against the Cowboys. Vick has been knocked around pretty good the past couples of weeks. IF Vick does start, it would not surprise to see him give way to back up Kevin Kolb at some point.

After looking good in practice this week, head coach Mike Tomlin is leaning toward letting the Steeler’s playmaking safety Troy Polamalu play in Sunday’s matchup against the Browns according to ESPN.

The Brown’s running back Peyton Hillis is expected to be active and should start today, although he faces a very difficult matchup against the Steelers number one ranked run defense. Hillis only rushed for 41 yards in the earlier matchup this season.

Quarterback Brett Favre has finally been cleared to play for the Vikings, but his chances of getting on the field still look “iffy” at best. Favre has hardly practiced in weeks and the Lions have one of the best young pass rushers in rookie Ndamukong Suh; but then again would it surprise anyone if he played?

The Falcons wide receiver Roddy White practiced in full on Friday, so he is expected to play and start today against the Panthers. Even if the Falcons focus on the ground attack today, White should still effective; caught eight passes in the first matchup this season.

Reports are indicating that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will start today against the Bills, but is not likely to play no more than a few series. Sanchez has been banged up a bit over the past couple of weeks, so it makes sense for the team to rest him up for the post season.

Today’s Matchup

With an excellent matchup on his schedule it looks like running back Shonn Greene won’t get an opportunity today to take advantage. The Bills have one of the league’s worst run defenses this season, but Green won’t get a shot at them; he’s been declared inactive today.

The Giants are in a must-win game today and with no Steve Smith or Hakeem Nicks, it looks like it will be wide receiver Mario Manningham against the Redskins 31st ranked defense. Manningham has 12 cathces and three touchdowns in his last two starts.

The Bills won’t have to face Darelle Revis or Antonio Cromartie today, both have been declared inactive; start wide receiver Stevie Johnson. Johnson is having a breakout season with 77 receptions, over 1,000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.

The Broncos will likely take a cue from the Bengals last week and attack the Chargers secondary with wide receiver Brandon Lloyd. In the two Tebow starts, Lloyd has 9 catches for 190 yards and a touchdown.

With no Andre Johnson in the lineup, wide receiver Jacoby Jones figures to pick up the slack in the Texan’s passing attack. Last week with Johnson out, Jones turned in a 5 catch 115 yards receiving day.

The Raiders won’t have any questions about who they will give the ball to today against the Chiefs. With no McFadden in the lineup, running back Michael Bush figures to see a heavy load today. Bush is averaging just a tick under four yards per carry, but does have seven rushing touchdowns this season.

FSH NOTEBOOK: THE SATURDAY FANTASY REPORT

January 1st, 2010 Saturday

The Saturday Fantasy Report

Week 17 Matchups to watch…

Carolina @ Atlanta
….the Falcons will be staking their claim on their first division title since 2004 and there’s no question they will be riding the legs of Michael Turner (1,304 yards, 11 touchdowns). The Panthers rank 23rd against the run and have allowed 19 rushing touchdowns (2nd most in the league) this season. They will have their hands full trying to slow down the Falcons ground game (ranked 11th). In their first meeting this season Turner toted the rock 28 times for 112 yards and crossed the goal line three times.

Pittsburgh @ Cleveland
…..running back Peyton Hillis has been a fantasy sleeper that has been awoken in 2010. He emerged as the Brown’s featured starter in week 3 and has not looked back. Hillis has rushed for over 1,100 yards this season and ranks second on the team with 60 receptions. There’s no doubt he has brought a fantasy championship to many owners with his stellar play this season, but in week 17 he could be running into a brick wall. On Sunday he’ll face the NFL’s number one rush defense (Steelers), the same club that limited him to just 41 yards on 12 carries back in week 6. The Steelers defense has not allowed a single 100-yard rusher all season and tomorrow doesn’t look like they’ll start.

Oakland @ Kansas City
….the Chiefs ranked number one in the league in rushing and on Sunday against Raiders they figure to do more of what they do so well. With the one-two punch of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones, the Chiefs will attack the Raiders 29th ranked run defense. Charles has been tremendous this season with nearly 1,400 yards on the ground and over 450 yards receiving. He figures to get a full work load on Sunday against a Raider defense that he victimized for 100 total yards in week 9. The Raiders did a good job of slowing down Charles in their first meeting (53 yards rushing), but the Chiefs explosive back has been running very well recently averaging over 8 yards per carry in his last two games.

Tampa Bay @ New Orleans
…..the Saints are still looking for a division title and it never hurts to send a message. Last Monday they showed the Falcons they are still the defending champions and on Sunday they figure to show the Buccaneers as well. Drew Brees and company will roll their 2nd ranked passing offense into the Superdome on Sunday to face the Bucs 6th ranked pass defense. Brees has been solid once again in 2010 with 32 touchdowns, 7-300 yard games, and over 4,400 yards passing. In his first matchup with the Bucs, Brees torched his advisory for 263 yards and three scores; make no mistake Brees won’t leave Sunday to chance.

Buffalo @ New York Jets
….the Jets figure to rest some players on Sunday, but running back Shonn Greene doesn’t look to be one of them. With the league’s 31st ranked run defense in town, Rex Ryan is expected to rest Tomlinson and give his back-up some tune up work for the playoffs. In their first meeting this season against the Bills, both Jets running backs turned in 100-yard efforts. Greene may not hit the dual century mark, but he figures to rack up a lot on the ground.

While the Jets ground game could get loose against the very questionable Bill’s defense, the Jets defense could also have their hands full with shutdown corner Darelle Revis expected to sit. It not official, but with Revis out the Bills passing game, including wide receiver Stevie Johnson could receive a huge upgrade. Johnson did score in the first matchup, but was relatively quiet for the game with just three catches. Since their first meeting Johnson has emerged as the team’s number one receiver and is enjoying a breakout season (77 receptions, 1,001 yards, 10 touchdowns). He will likely be featured on Sunday.

These are just my takes on how I see it on Sunday…

FSH: WHAT'S THE SKINNY

December 1st, 2010, Wednesday
What’s the Fantasy Football Skinny

My Fantasy Notes:

WR DWAYNE BOWE IS ON FIRE
Right now there is not hotter wide receiver in fantasy football or the NFL than the Chiefs Dwayne Bowe. Bowe has caught at least one touchdown in each of his last seven games and has totaled 13 scores during that span. For the year Bowe leads the NFL with 14. During his streak, Bowe has been targeted 75 times (leads the league), caught 49 balls for 733 yards. He is simply hotter than the sun and the moment and is averaging 24.6 fantasy points in his last six games, including a scintillating 29 points in his last three. He’s also a fantasy gem in PPR leagues averaging over eight grabs per contest, also in his last six games.

RB PEYTON HILLIS POUNDS THE GROUND
The Bronco’s fans are undoubtedly mourning the loss of Peyton Hillis, while Cleveland fans and fantasy owners rejoice. Hillis has simply been on a tear this season, especially of late. In his last four starts Hillis is averaging over 166 yards of offense and has scored seven times. There’s no question he is having a spectacular season with 905 yards rushing, 46 receptions, 414 yards receiving, and 13 total touchdowns. For fantasy owners he’s averaging over 26 fantasy points per game (traditional scoring) in his last four.

WR ANQUAN BOLDIN REMAINS GROUNDED
The Raven’s wide receiver leads the club with 51 catches this season, but he is hardly soaring as many had expected he might when he arrived in Baltimore. Boldin has remained relatively quiet in his last four games catching a total of just 13 passes for 134 yards and one score; not quite the numbers fantasy owners were looking for.

RB FRED JACKSON JUST POWERS ON
The Bills have been receiving a little bit of fan-fair lately courtesy of the impressive play of their 3rd year receiver Stevie Johnson, but another Bill fans and fantasy owners should be taking notice of is running back Fred Jackson. The Bills starting ball carrier has only averaged 154 yards of offense in his last three games. He has also caught 14 passes and scored five times. The versatile back is proving to be solid in the feature back role, while paying big dividends for fantasy owners. This Jackson is all action averaging just over 24 fantasy points per game (traditional scoring) in his last three games.

QB TOM BRADY IS STARTING TO ROLL
The Patriots quarterback is having another one of those seasons and for opposing defense, that’s Mr. Brady to you. Brady has not thrown a pick since week six and 190 passes later, he has passed for 1,500 yards (250-yards per game) and thrown 14 touchdowns; not bad for a former NFL MVP. And most importantly for Patriot fans, the team is 5-1 in that stretch. For the fantasy owners, Brady is averaging 23.5 points (traditional scoring) in his last six games, but a whopping 31.3 points in his last three.

QB SAM BRADFORD CONTINUES STEADY PLAY
The Rams rookie quarterback is not setting any record books on fire, but he is certainly turning heads with his steady play in the pocket. In his last six starts Bradford has just tossed one interception in 210 pass attempts. The rookie signal caller has been solid with 11 touchdowns during that span, including averaging 264 yards passing in his last three games. Bradford is also averaging 19 fantasy points per game (traditional scoring) in his last six starts; not bad for a rookie or veteran quarterback for that matter.

FSH: MY WEEKLY SURVIVAL

November 17, 2010, Wednesday

My Weekly Survivors

It’s been a couple of weeks since I have recapped my progression, but over the time passed I have managed to keep steady in the top ten. Week 9 was another steay week with 79 total points highlighted by a strong performance from quarterback Aaron Rodgers (27 points) and new comer tight end Jacob Tamme (16 points).

Week 10 was more of the same with action starting a little early. Last Thursday my team started fast with quarterback Joe Flacco (21 points) and wide receiver Roddy White (25 points) getting out of the gate quick. The week finished okay with my team totaling just 78 points, but it was enough to climb to 7th place in this 35-team dog race.

This week the well that was once deep is starting to dry up, but if you search deep and long you can still find a few gems.

Here are my picks for week 11….

QB-Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons quarterback has been quite the hot commodity this season leading his team to a 7-2 start. Ryan has been accurate (62.7 completion percentage, 91.9 passer rating) in the pocket and a player maker thus far this season with 16 passing touchdowns. In his last three starts he has seven tosses to paydirt versus one pick. This Sunday he’ll face the Rams 18th ranked pass defense on the road, but in a dome. 13 of Ryan’s touchdown passes have come indoors.
(Projected: 22 fantasy points/ 265 yards passing, three touchdowns)

RB-Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills
The Bills starting running back did an excellent job last week handling the bulk of the team’s rushing duties and if given that opportunity this week against the league’s 22nd run defense he should find success. Jackson is averaging over four yards per carry this season with three rushing touchdowns, but he has also turned into a nice receiving option out of the backfield with 11 receptions in his last two starts. The Bengals run defense has surrendered eight rushing touchdowns this season and have allowed 11 run plays of 20 yards or more; expect Jackson to be very busy again this Sunday.
(Projected: 16 fantasy points/ 85 yards rushing, 5 catches, 25 yards receiving, one touchdown)

RB-Peyton Hillis, Cleveland Browns
The “Brown Bus” was on the move again last week and tanked his way to 82 yards rushing and a score against one of the league’s toughest run defenses. Hillis has been a fantasy plus this season for owners with over 700 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns. This Sunday when he faces the Jaguar’s 21st ranked defense that has allowed 12 rushing touchdowns Hillis will be geared to bring more smiles.
(Projected: 19 fantasy points/ 105 yards rushing, 5 catches, 30 yards receiving, one touchdown)

WR-DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles
There is no denying his explosive capability and paired with his quarterback’s strong arm, it’s big play galore. Jackson has five touchdowns this season and is averaging over 20 yards per grab. Last week he only saw five balls in his direction, but he made the most catching two and scoring on one for 88 yards. He’ll face a tough Giant’s secondary (14 touchdowns allowed), but one he has had success against. In his last two starts against the G-men, Jackson has 9 grabs for 256 yards and two scores.
(Projected: 15 fantasy points/ 6 catches, 90 yards, one touchdown)

WR-Percy Harvin, Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings playmaker looks to be the center of attention in the passing game once again with the news of Sidney Rice unlikely to go. Harvin is having a solid season and has been terrific the past several weeks. In his last three games he has 19 receptions for 294 yards receiving and a score despite the injury bug. With an important match up with the Packers this Sunday, expect Harvin (70 targets this season) to be highly active.
(Projected: 13 fantasy points/ 5 catches, 75 yards, one touchdown)

TE-Jermaine Gresham, Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals rookie tight end has not been a big play much of this season, but coming off his best game last week (9 catches, 85 yards, one touchdown) this could be the start of something good. This week he faces the league’s worst pass defense against tight ends. The Bills have played better, but have still allowed 8 touchdowns this season; that’s enough to convince me to start Gresham.
(Projected: 12 fantasy points/ 6 catches, 60 yards, one touchdown)

PK-Dan Carpenter, Miami Dolphins
The Bears and Dolphins will square off Thursday night in what will likely be a defensive slugfest. I would suspect points could be at a premium and touchdowns tough to come by. The Bears don’t give much on the ground and the Phins could be forced to settle for a few extra kicks in the game.
(Projected: 11 fantasy points/ three field goals, two extra point)

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

November 10th, 2010 Wednesday

David’s Daily Digest

My Fantasy Notes:

PEYTON HILLIS GOES NUTS ON SUNDAY
The Cleveland Browns must be sending over thank you cards to Bronco’s head coach Josh McDaniels every Sunday for trading running back Peyton Hillis. Built in the same form as a Mike Alstott, Hillis has shown much more versatility and playmaking ability. Sunday was just another, ho hum one of those days with Hillis scampering his way to 184 yards rushing with a couple of scores against the Patriots.
My Fantasy Read:
If any doubt had existed about Hillis’ ability, he has certainly erased all of it and earned his way onto fantasy owner’s weekly starting lineups. With 644 yards rushing, 30 receptions, and eight total touchdowns this season Hillis is a must-start every week, including PPR leagues.

JAMES JONES BREAKS OUT AGAINST COWBOYS
With an ailing Donald Driver sidelined, wide receiver James Jones had the perfect opportunity to step up and shine. Jones did just that and cashed in nine targets on Sunday for 8 receptions, 123 yards receiving and a score. Jones could have had a second touchdown, but dropped the sure pass.
My Fantasy Read:
The Packers number three slot receiver has the talent and given the opportunity he can make plays. Sunday night was his second 100-yard game of the season. With time to heal through the upcoming bye week Driver should heal and return to action, but keep your eye on Jones down the stretch. As he continues to earn Rodger’s trust, he could see plenty more balls his direction even with Driver back.

BRETT FAVRE HAS A CAREER DAY IN WEEK 9
The Vikings and their fans have been waiting and maybe, just maybe they got what they have been waiting for all season; some Brett Favre magic. Trailing by 14 points late in the 4th quarter, Favre engineered two touchdown scoring drives, capped with an 25 yard scoring strike to his tight end Visanthe Shiancoe with just 27 seconds left in regulation. The score was enough to tie the game and send it into overtime, where Favre continued to work his magic and lead his team to the game winning field-goal by kicker Ryan Longwell. On the afternoon Favre set a career high with 446 passing yards and added a pair of touchdowns.
My Fantasy Read:
This may have been what Viking fans have been waiting for and it just may propel the team back into the playoff hunt, but it was hardly enough to convince any fantasy owner to jump aboard. It’s definitely a good sign, but Favre will need to string a couple of more games together before he can be considered a dependable fantasy start

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

September 28th, 2010

David’s Daily Digest

My Fantasy Notes:

KYLE ORTON POSTS A HUGE NUMBER ON SUNDAY
The Bronco’s signal caller passed for 476 yards and a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts in the team’s 27-13 loss on Sunday. Orton used 57 passes on the day to post his huge numbers, but struggles in the red-zone kept the Bronco’s off the board limiting his overall production.
My Fantasy Read:
Without a healthy Knowshon Moreno the Broncos may struggle to find their ground game, but their 2010 passing game is no anomaly. It’s a safe bet to expect Orton to continue his flourishing ways in the short passing game. He may not launch another 57 passes, but he should continue to complete a high percentage, chew up the yards, and the team is bound to improve in the red-zone.

LANCE MOORE HAS BIG DAY IN LOSS TO FALCONS
Without their explosive running back Reggie Bush, the Saints looked to another source for playmaking on Sunday and found wide receiver Lance Moore. Against the Falcons Moore caught six passes for 149 yards and found paydirt twice.
My Fantasy Read:
With Bush out, it’s no surprise that Brees was able to find another go to especially Moore. Remember in 2008 Moore was his main target with 79 receptions and 10 touchdowns. On Sunday Moore led the team with seven targets and should continue to be a regular source of production.

PEYTON HILLIS POUNDS THE RAVENS ON SUNDAY
The Brown’s running back Peyton Hillis became the team’s featured back on Sunday against the Ravens. Hillis carried the ball 22 times for more than 140 yards on the ground against one of the leagues toughest defenses. He also added seven receptions for another 36 yards.
My Fantasy Read:
Hillis basically proved he can be a dependable and impressive every down back. Even when Harrison returns, expect to see Hillis carry the brunt of the load. He should be a dependable fantasy option going forward.

JABAR GAFFNEY FLOURISHES AGAINST THE COLTS
The Bronco’s receiver is no stranger to McDaniel’ system and on Sunday he was a huge benefactor catching 12 passes for 140 yards. It was a breakout game for Gaffney who is tied for the team lead with 17 receptions.
My Fantasy Read:
Gaffney was targeted a team high 14 times on Sunday, This is probably not something he will see too much more of going forward (at least not that many targets in a game), but as the team's passing has success so should Gaffney. He’ll have some value in deeper leagues, but owners may want to hold off rushing to the wires just yet.

FSH: MONDAY MORNING HUDDLE

August 3rd, 2009 10:37pm PST

The Most Notable Back-ups to Watch

Back-up Running Backs that Could Make an Impact….
Just like any year in fantasy football or any competitive team sport for that matter, depth is going to key for you team to go further. Perhaps the most key and arguably the most critical position for any fantasy football team is the backfield.

Certainly a big arm can make a huge world of difference, but while some fantasy owners try to ride the bandwagons of Brady and Brees in 2009, there will be those that stock up talent and depth in the backfield leaving the rest to scrounge for the bottom of the barrel.

Not to fear my fantastically football challenged. While the talent pool may quickly seem watered down once you get through the perennial starters in the league, there are a great number of back-ups that are worth taking note. These are in some cases the hidden gems that may possibly serve as football gladiator saviors for the upcoming fantasy season.

The most heralded of this year’s non-starter without question is the Saints Reggie Bush. While he is not the starter, he is less likely a back-up and in many circles considered a starter off the bench. With Pierre Thomas filling the McAllister role, the dynamic Bush will more than likely play the more versatile role we saw his first couple of seasons.

Aside from the dynamic Mr. Electric, there are a handful of running backs in the league that will sit far enough down the depth charts and could be overlooked. There are going to be quite a few hidden gems that on surface may lack shine and could get passed over, fantasy owners should take note.

The running back by committee trend is still alive and well and finding those places where the wealth is spread generously may not be elusive as first thought. In 2008 the Ravens, Falcons, Patriots, Panthers, and Giants all ran the ball over 500 times. And while the Broncos, Chiefs, and the Jets did not have as many carries, they did move the ball well on the ground averaging over 4.5-yards per carry.

If you are looking for added depth and can’t grab Reggie as your late running back pick in your fantasy draft, here are the next best picks to follow that will surely add that needed dimension to carry your team further;

2009 Best of the “Runner-ups to Reggie”

  1. Jonathan Stewart (Car)…..with 10 touchdowns in 2008, he won’t be overlooked.
  2. Derrick Ward (TB)…could emerge as the starter at some point.
  3. Ahmad Bradshaw (NYG)…should see lots of work behind Jacobs.
  4. Leon Washington (NYJ)…with an aging Jones, Leon will see more action.
  5. Felix Jones (Dal)…could play much bigger role in offense this season.
  6. Kevin Faulk (NE)….almost 1,000-yards of offense in 2008.
  7. Ladell Betts (NO)…had a big 2008, but will step down behind Colston.
  8. LeRon McClain (Bal)…could see enough red-zone to be relevant in 2009.
  9. Fred Jackson (Buf)….early opportunity could open door down the road.
  10. Peyton Hillis (Den)…quietly becoming a fave in Den, could be a huge sleeper.

Note Worthy:

Darren Sproles (Ari)…if LT breaks down, could play a much larger role.
Chris Wells (Ari)…..has big upside, expected to be eventual starter.
TJ Duckett (Sea)…could play similar role as McClain in Baltimore.
Jamaal Charles (KC)…a better fit in the spread offense, could do very well.
Jerious Norwood (Atl)…expected to see more work in 2009.
Tasard Choice (Dal)….needs an ooportunity, too much talent in front.
Michael Bush (Oak)…if he gets the chance, could prove to be a deep sleeper.

Peyton Hillis: The next A-train

Bronco’s fullback has some kick….
Just ask the Bronco’s defense how tough fullback Peyton Hillis really and don’t be surprised if linebacker Tim Crowder is the first to agree. On Saturday during team drills, Hillis brought the wood and put a hurting to Crowder who was still feeling the pain a day later.

The toughness and ferocity that Hillis has shown is truly reminiscent of former Buccaneer running back Mike Alstott. A tough hard-nose runner and blocker, Hillis plays the game old-school.

Even with a packed backfield that includes Lamont Jordan, Correll Buckhalter, and top rookie selection Knowshon Moreno, Hillis should still figure into the equation on offense. During the teams recent OTA’s Hillis has been seeing a lot of snaps in one back sets and head coach Josh McDaniels, likes his ability to catch the ball.

Like Alstott did much of his career in Tampa, the Bronco’s fullback could serve as a primary blocker in two back sets, but be utilized as the team’s primary short-yardage carrier. The dynamic that could prove most useful for McDaniel’s offense is Hillis’ pass receiving skills.

Last season Hillis caught 14 passes for 179-yards, which included seven in Week nine against the Dolphins. The following week, because of an injury to rookie running Ryan Torain, Hillis was moved to tailback. From Week ten on he became the team’s primary ball carrier with 57 handles over the next four weeks, before his season ended with a torn hamstring.

According to McDaniels, Hillis “is a valuable player and versatile and can create some matchup problems for defenses” if the Broncos use him right. While at Arkansas blocking for Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, Hillis showed his versatility playing fullback, tight end, wide receiver, and special teams, along with tailback. Over his collegiate career he managed over 2,600 all-purpose yards and scored 23 touchdowns.

There’s no question Hillis’ presence in Denver is going to upset the fantasy balance of the Bronco’s backfield, but the former Arkansas Razorback is making a strong case to see his share of touches. Fantasy owners had better take note; this Hog is demanding the ball and his 504 total yards (329-rushing, 175-receiving) with six touchdowns in his last six games in 2008 should be enough to merit such a demand.

It’s a good bet that Hillis won’t be the team’s starting tailback in 2009, but by the looks of things in Denver he’s a shoe-in to be fantasy relevant this season.

FSH: TUESDAY (FOOTBALL) TALK

TUESDAY (FOOTBALL) TALK
[Saturday Edition]

As the annual NFL draft approaches, there seems to be plenty of time to do your homework for the upcoming 2009 fantasy football season, but it's never too soon to get started. There have been plenty of moves (signings & releases) this offseason and figures to be plenty more. With the faces of many teams always changing it can be quite a chore to keep up with what to expect and even more difficult to know who to watch. This week I give you three players that should be on your radar come fantasy draft time.

Fantasy Football Watch

Aside from all the distraction being caused by the "Cutler-McDaniels Chronicles" one of the bright spots in the Denver camp this offseason has been the progress of running back Peyton Hillis, who is coming back from surgery to repair his hamstring. Currently Hillis is ahead of schedule and should be healthy by mid-April. With Hillis figuring to be back in camp at 100%, despite all of the offseason movement in the backfield in McDaniels new system the Broncos bruising back could become a fantasy sleeper in 2009. The former Razorback when given the opportunity showed great versatility as a runner and pas catcher. With the new additions to the team it doesn't look like Hillis will be given many chances to run the ball, but could see some short yardage carries. With McDaniels bringing in his pass friendly offense from New England, Hillis could see lots opportunities. In the three seasons under McDaniels, running backs in New England averaged 77 receptions per season. Because of his ability to make plays in the passing game, Hillis could be a player to watch for 2009 fantasy football.

Fantasy football fans in Jacksonville will witness firsthand the fall out from the release of wide receiver Matt Jones and it all may not be all that bad. With Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter already gone, the release of Jones now paves the way to a starting position for wide receiver Mike Walker making him a possible 2009 sleeper pick. Walker should remain off of most radars, because of an unproductive 2008, but last season when he was healthy and given the opportunity he was able to show promise as a receiver. In Week 5 he caught six passes for 107-yards. 2008 was mostly filled with injuries and Walker saw little action (especially playing behind Williams, Jones, and Northcutt). He'll be given every opportunity in 2009 to be a starter, but could be a bit of a risky play in Del Rio's conservative game plan. He more likely to offer more value as an in season pick-up, rather than expending a valuable fantasy draft pick. He'll be one to watch in training camp and the early weeks of the 2009 season.

For two reasons fantasy owners should be keeping their eyes opened and focused on the Broncos passing attack in 2009. Sure with all this Cutler mess, you have to wonder who will be under center and with wide receiver Brandon Marshall in trouble, who's going to catch the ball. So just where should owners be focusing their attention, how about wideout Eddie Royal. As a rookie in 2008 Royal caught 91 passes for 980-yards and also scored five touchdowns. He figures to be a big part of the Broncos new passing system under McDaniels and will play the Wes Welker-role in Denver. He'll have premium value in PPR leagues. If the Broncos do in fact trade Cutler, Royal still figures to be a very productive receiver and should be drafted no lower than a low-level WR2. If Cutler stays in town, with Marshall expected to miss up to eight games (suspension) and no bona fide replacement in site, Royal could see his value surge as high as low level WR1 in deeper leagues. Royal will be a hot option to watch leading up to 2009 fantasy drafts.

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST (FANTASY 411)

March 18th, 2009 9:30pm PST

David's Daily Digest
[My Take]

It's 10 o'clock on the west coast and do you know where your TV remote is? I haven't a clue where mine is at the moment, but it doesn't matter. Right now I am not interested in watching a re-broadcast of NFL Total Access or the water-downed retread of Sportscenter. These days I can go online and catch up with the what's happening in just minutes, well maybe a little longer than minutes. Over the past several days I have been noting some of the current action taking place in the NFL offseason. Sure the whole Culter-McDaniels Chronicles has everyone's attention, but just the same there has been movement by several teams that is worth noting. Here's my take on the latest...

My Take...

QB JAY CUTLER NOT GOING TO D.C.
Despite some loose rumors abound, quarterback Jay Cutler is not going to the Redskins. According to Redskins GM Vinny Cerrato the team is content with quarterback Jason Campbell. Currently the Broncos are not planning to entertain talks, but as the draft nears disinterested teams could change their minds quickly. Cutler in Denver is considered a possible top five quarterback pick in fantasy leagues, but could lose some value depending on where he lands if traded.

TE L.J. SMITH NOW A RAVEN
With Todd Heap falling off the map, the team needed to find another pass-receiving tight end, but I'm not so sure about the injury proned Smith. L.J. has never been an elite receiver, but has usually been a mid-level producer when healthy. His 2008 season was a bust with just 37 receptions and he's missed nine games the last two season. The Ravens haven't been getting much production at the tight end position anyway, so with the addition of Smith any little bit will help except for fantasy owners.

WR BOBBY ENGRAM FINDS WORK WITH THE CHIEFS
It's pretty evident that the Chiefs new head coach Todd Haley is planning to build another prolific passing game around his new quarterback. There's no question that in K.C. the go-to man is receiver Dwayne Bowe, but with the team adding Bobby Engram, he'll be a nice slot addition and give Cassel more weapons to utilize in the passing game. Engram is hardly going to light-up any draft boards, but in deeper leagues he could be a serviceable WR3 for the bye weeks.

RB PEYTON HILLIS REHAB AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
The Broncos running back Peyton Hillis, who is expected to start at full-back and possibly play a bit of a hybrid position is rehabbing very well. The Bronco's ball carrier is expecting to be full strength by mid-April. Don't be surprised if the new coaching genius in Denver takes advantage of Hillis' pass receiving skills. With Hillis likely to be designated for short-yardage situation, his versatility could earn him extra work on the field and create huge miss-matches for the Denver offense with formation changes, without changing personnel.

WR BRANDON MARSHALL ALREADY TUNING UP
Despite the looming distraction of a possible suspension, the Bronco's talented wideout is already preparing for the 2009 season. The Denver Post was reporting that Marshall is attending mini-camp, but with possible disciplinary action by the NFL likely no matter how ready he is, fantasy owners may have to re-think their drafts. Marshall is a bona fide top-10 wide receiver, but eight games is too many to risk with an early round pick.

RB MARSHAWN LYNCH VISITS GOODELL
The Bills running back met with the NFL commissioner and came away expecting to receive punishment for his recent off-the-field debacle. Lynch is likely to get hit with a two-to-four game suspension at the start of the 2009 season. If he only gets a two game hit, he may only see his fantasy value drop slightly, maybe a second round fantasy pick, but with as many as four games Lynch would likely fall to a RB3 draft position.

IDP Notes:

For those of us that can never get enough football, fantasy never stops on the offensive side of the ball. The past several days has been just as busy on the "Dark-side" of the ball. Here's my take this week on the recent moves and news...

STEELERS RE-SIGN DB FERNANDO BRYANT
The Steelers lost Bryant McFadden to free agency this offseason, so the signing of Bryant is more likely to add depth, insurance, and fill the nickel and dime packages. He'll have limited value in any IDP leagues and is not worth drafting barring any injuries to the team's secondary.

DL PAUL SPICER JOINS SAINTS
The Saints don't have a lot of cap space to play with, but they are managing to keep busy by making moves. The team added DL Paul Spicer to give the defense some inside support against the run. Spicer not known as a big pass rusher is more of a clogger. He'll have little value as a IDP starter, but could be a serviceable play coming off a 2008 season with 34 tackles and four sacks.

DL JASON TAYLOR POSSIBLY A PATRIOT?
There are rumors floating that the former Redskin, Jason Taylor could be a Patriot. At the age of 34, Taylor is running out of time and could be willing to take a pay cut and reduced role to win a championship. If Taylor lands in Foxboro, he'll likely become a pass-rush specialist and if healthy could still be a mid-level D-lineman in IDP leagues.

DL JULIUS PEPPERS LINKED WITH PATS
According to credible sources in the football community, there is no validity to the rumors circulating linking the Panthers defensive lineman Julius Peppers with the Patriots. While this rumor is not likely to lay to rest anytime soon, it appears very improbable with the amount of dollars that would be tied to Peppers in any deal. Peppers is considered a top defensive selection in IDP leagues, but if moved to OLB in a 3-4 system elsewhere than Carolina, he could be a risky early round selection. He's athletic and talented, but undisciplined at the position his numbers could suffer.
