FSH NOTEBOOK: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

Sunday Edition
November 11th, 2012

David’s Daily Digest

Sunday notes

NFL sources have already ruled out Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin today, so you can expect to see a ton of Adrian Peterson. All-Day may have trouble finding a lot of holes today against the Lions run defense, but he’s going to get plenty of touches and is always a good bet to break one. AP is good for a 20+ carry game today and 100 yards on the ground seems likely.

The Patriots are going to be without tight end Aaron Hernandez. Going up against the Bills today, we should see lots of running back Stevan Ridley and you can count of some Gronk in the red zone. Tight end Visanthe Shancoe is expected to start in place of Hernandez, but he’s not expected to make any kind of fantasy impact today.

The Lions Calvin Johnson is expected to play according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. There’s was little chance of Megatron sitting this week as is the case with most weeks; takes more than a little Madden curse to keep Megatron out. Calvin has just one touchdown this season, but he has responded with four 100-yard receiving games; he’s on pace for 96 receptions and 1,534 yards (not bad for a curse).

Running back DeMarco Murray is still sidelined opening the door for back up Felix Jones to make his fourth straight start. Since his week six 92 yard rushing effort Jones has hardly been a factor in the run game, but he did post 109 total yards last week; although a great number came late in the game against a prevent defense. Jones is only worth a look in the deepest leagues as a possible flex play.

The Texans are calling tight end Owen Daniels a game-time decision and won’t make any decisions on whether he’ll play until we are closer to kickoff; the Texans play in the Sunday night contest. Daniels is one of the leagues’ leading tight ends, but does have a tough matchup against a physical Bears defense. With a late game today, if you have a capable backup and can avoid this situation it’s probably best.

FSH: MY WEEKLY SURVIVAL

December 2nd, 2010, Thursday

My Weekly Survivors

Well last week turned out to be a disaster. Taking Sidney Rice in only his second game back was a stretch, even though he saw extended action the week prior; just one catch for 20 yards last week. I can only imagine how many fantasy owners lost their matchup last week because Titan’s running back Chris Johnson totaled just seven yards; can you say disappointment.

Thankfully I had Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel under center to anchor my lineup. His 27 points (233 yards passing and four touchdowns) saved what would have been a horrific fantasy catastrophe.

With this being the 13th week to submit a lineup and I really have to look for a lot of the lesser known and lower caliber players with ideal matchups. This week no more stretches, I am going to stick with the better odds.

Here are my picks for week 13….

QB-Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams
The Rams rookie quarterback has been steady and solid over recent weeks. He’s coming off his best performance this season passing for over 300 yards and tossing three touchdowns last week against the Broncos. This week Bradford will be throwing against the Cardinal’s 25th ranked pass defense that has only sacked the quarterback 21 times; with time in the pocket Bradford could have another big Sunday.
(Projected: 19 fantasy points/ 255 yards passing, 15 rushing yards, two touchdowns)

RB- Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers
The Panther’s running back is back and has returned to the starting role. Last week Stewart rambled 98 yards on 12 carries and this week he could be just as effective running against the Seahawks 22nd ranked run defense that has allowed 11 rushing touchdowns. I look for Stewart to see at least 18-20 carries and that could be enough to get him to the century mark.
(Projected: 17 fantasy points/ 105 yards rushing, 1 catche, 10 yards receiving, one touchdown)

RB-Arian Foster, Houston Texans
The Texans running back has just been Mr. Everything to the offense this season. Foster leads the NFL with over 1,100 yards rushing, but he also leads the Texans with 75 receptions. He is a dual threat that is difficult to contain whether it’s rushing or receiving. The Eagles will have not only have trouble containing Foster in the run game, but covering him in the pass game as well. Foster will get his.
(Projected: 19 fantasy points/ 80 yards rushing, 6 catches, 55 yards receiving, one touchdown)

WR-Terrell Owens, Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals big physical receiver Terrell Owens is enjoying a very highly productive season with 65 catches, over 900 yards receiving, and 8 touchdowns. He faces the Saints in what will likely be an up-tempo style game and one that could see him get plenty of chances. This year Owens is tied for the lead with 124 targets.
(Projected: 16 fantasy points/ 7 catches, 105 yards, one touchdown)

WR-Anquan Boldin, Baltimore Ravens
The Raven’s wide out has been unusually quiet on the field lately, but this could be the week he makes a lot of noise. With the Steelers in town, Boldin could present some matchup problems for a very questionable 22nd ranked pass defense. In their first matchup this season Boldin caught 7 passes; expect to see him targeted often this Sunday.
(Projected: 14 fantasy points/ 8 catches, 85 yards, one touchdown)

TE-Visanthe Shiancoe, Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings offense has been a tough one to read, but one thing that has been much easier to read this season is the Buffalo Bills matching up with opposing tight ends. The Vikings and Shiancoe will have the comfort of home and while the Bills have improved over recent weeks I expect to see Favre and his tight end to enjoy some success. Shiancoe led the Vikes last week with only three catches for 54 yards, but he was targerted six times; look for this trend to continue with greater success.
(Projected: 11 fantasy points/ 5 catches, 55 yards, one touchdown)

PK-David Akers, Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles had some struggles last week with the Bears stout defense, but this week against the Texan’s 28th ranked defense they should have great success moving the ball up and down the field. I would expect to see plenty of scoring opportunities for the Eagles and their kicking game.
(Projected: 12 fantasy points/ three field goals, three extra points)

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

November 10th, 2010 Wednesday

David’s Daily Digest

My Fantasy Notes:

PEYTON HILLIS GOES NUTS ON SUNDAY
The Cleveland Browns must be sending over thank you cards to Bronco’s head coach Josh McDaniels every Sunday for trading running back Peyton Hillis. Built in the same form as a Mike Alstott, Hillis has shown much more versatility and playmaking ability. Sunday was just another, ho hum one of those days with Hillis scampering his way to 184 yards rushing with a couple of scores against the Patriots.
My Fantasy Read:
If any doubt had existed about Hillis’ ability, he has certainly erased all of it and earned his way onto fantasy owner’s weekly starting lineups. With 644 yards rushing, 30 receptions, and eight total touchdowns this season Hillis is a must-start every week, including PPR leagues.

JAMES JONES BREAKS OUT AGAINST COWBOYS
With an ailing Donald Driver sidelined, wide receiver James Jones had the perfect opportunity to step up and shine. Jones did just that and cashed in nine targets on Sunday for 8 receptions, 123 yards receiving and a score. Jones could have had a second touchdown, but dropped the sure pass.
My Fantasy Read:
The Packers number three slot receiver has the talent and given the opportunity he can make plays. Sunday night was his second 100-yard game of the season. With time to heal through the upcoming bye week Driver should heal and return to action, but keep your eye on Jones down the stretch. As he continues to earn Rodger’s trust, he could see plenty more balls his direction even with Driver back.

BRETT FAVRE HAS A CAREER DAY IN WEEK 9
The Vikings and their fans have been waiting and maybe, just maybe they got what they have been waiting for all season; some Brett Favre magic. Trailing by 14 points late in the 4th quarter, Favre engineered two touchdown scoring drives, capped with an 25 yard scoring strike to his tight end Visanthe Shiancoe with just 27 seconds left in regulation. The score was enough to tie the game and send it into overtime, where Favre continued to work his magic and lead his team to the game winning field-goal by kicker Ryan Longwell. On the afternoon Favre set a career high with 446 passing yards and added a pair of touchdowns.
My Fantasy Read:
This may have been what Viking fans have been waiting for and it just may propel the team back into the playoff hunt, but it was hardly enough to convince any fantasy owner to jump aboard. It’s definitely a good sign, but Favre will need to string a couple of more games together before he can be considered a dependable fantasy start

WATERCOOLER CHAT

The Weekly Waiver Wire

Wayne “The Wire” Bosco

(Courtesy of the Fantasy Football Gang)

The Bye weeks continue in the NFL and the Waiver Wire just keeps getting busy. As the fantasy football season progresses, you weekly moves take on more importance; your studs are on the bye, your lineup is depleted and you need some serious help. Never fear because Wayne is always here to lend a helping hand, offer some good advice or just take up 10-15 minutes of your day with some senseless rants about a few guys he believes may have something to say this week!

So once again grab a cold one (better make it two) and tae a lot of notes, and just remember Wayne is working hard, so you don’t have to and because he’s got nothing better to do!

Week Seven

After spending the first five weeks of the season dormant, the Saints wide receiver Lance Moore has awaken from his slumber. Slowed by injuries, Moore has played very little in 2009 missing a few games and being limited, but on Sunday it was a different story. Finally looking healthy Moore resembled more of his 2008 self catching six passes for 78 yards, including a 12-yard score. With the Saints flying high and Brees getting the ball to everyone, Moore looked very good on Sunday and could be one of those options down the road with a big game here and there. He’s definitely going to figure into the Saints passing attack and if available needs to be on someone’s roster.

With the Panther’s return to doing what they do best, run the ball running back Jonathan Stewart will figure into this equation. Last week against the Buccaneers Stewart saw his fair share of carries with 17. He gained 110 yards on the ground and scored a rushing touchdown. With the inconsistent play from the passing game it's safe to expect the Panthers to run the ball. As long as Carolina is committed to the run, expect Stewart to have good value always with plenty of chances to score. Coming off the injury bug Stewart should be available and would be a good bye week fill-in.

The Raiders have had more than their share of offensive woes in this young season, but just last Sunday there was a ray of some hope. With injuries sidelining Darren McFadden, running back Justin Fargas has had opportunity this season. This past week Fargas earned 23 carries and totaled 98 yards. In one game Fargas doubled his carries for the season and with the Raiders in search of any kind of offense, expect head coach Tom Cable to start with Fargas. The former SC Trojan running back is not going to blow up, but he's a solid runner and a decent fill-in to cover a bye or injury.

When Fred Taylor went down, the Patriots turned to Sammy Morris, now that Morris is down they'll look to running back Laurence Maroney. In his first extended action of the season or the past decade (injured in 2008) or so Maroney jumped all over the chance and made the most of his time in the spotlight. As the team’s featured snowplowing machine this past Sunday Maroney touched the ball 19 times and totaled 133 yards of offense. With numbers like this the Patriots will more than likely stay with the hot hand and keep feeding the horse. With the schedule sitting right in the middle of the byes, Maroney becomes an appealing fill-in option with the Bucs up next.

“Wayne’s Word”

Enough with the running back theme, looking for a hot tip or just some helpful advice, either way Wayne has the latest insight for this week. Another worthy spot where you can find some good help is the tight end position and with this week’s hottest pickup Wayne offers you these words;

Over the past several weeks the Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe has quickly become quarterback Brett Favre’s most reliable target. Shiancoe is not being heavily targeted, but he’s not dropping many of Favre’s rockets. In the past three weeks the tight end has seen 11 passes thrown his direction and he’s managed to snag everyone; more importantly he’s making the most of his opportunities. Shiancoe has four touchdown receptions in his last three games and has five for the season. With Favre spreading the ball so well, expect him to keep looking for Shiancoe in the critical moments and in scoring position. As long as Shiancoe remains a favorite of Favre’s his numbers figure to improve. His fantasy scoring for the past three games is 7-points, 10-points, and 16-points.

Playing the Fantasy GM

Don-Pietro "The GM" Zamboni

Trade’em away or cut your ties
With the season one third of the way in, it’s time to start shaping your team for it’s championship run; and that means time to trim the fat. After six weeks of football we’ve seen plenty to know what needs to be done. You have a few studs that still have some appeal, but it looks like they could be heading for a cooling trend. Before their plate cools off, it’s time to make a move and trade away your stud for some potential upside that could come into play when the stretch run starts.

The GM Game
When the 2009 season opened up running backs Fred Jackson, Willie Parker, and LaDanian Tomlinson had the look of promise, but six weeks later a lot of that has changed. With injuries piling up and bye weeks coming into play a fantasy GM has to get creative to make his team better. These players may offer more value in a trade than in your lineup;

Trimming the fat….

Out of the gate running back Fred Jackson looked like he was going to be a beast in Buffalo, but since the return of Marshawn Lynch to the lineup in week four Jackson has seen his number dip significantly. He’s averaging only 14 touches and 56 yards per game in his last three starts. With the memories of what Jackson did in the first three weeks (291 rushing yards) still somewhat fresh, now is the time to part ways and get good value for him.

Like Jackson, the Steelers running back Willie Parker may offer some value for what he has done (in the past) and not what he is doing. Parker is an explosive runner that has the potential for big games, but playing behind Mendenhall, it may be a while before we see a big game. Your better off dealing him away to an owner that can afford to wait for Fast-Willie to come around. Parker is still not healthy and likely drafted as a mid RB2, you can’t afford to have him just riding your bench and taking a roster spot. He’s not going to give much value injured, but you may still be able to deal him away as insurance for Mendenhall or if the market is dry just cut your losses.

Now Tomlinson is a different story. With L.T. being injured and off to a slow start this season, you have already addressed your needs at running back. His Monday night performance (100 total yards) was not brilliant, but there were a few runs we saw that made you think, if the Chargers had stayed with the ground attack more perhaps he could have had a big night. Signs or not, Tomlinson is still a name and still has a market and will also be worth more to you in a trade, than in your lineup. The Chargers defense is not going to hold many leads and this is River’s team now. The offense will flow through the pass and while L.T. will contribute his value will be limited. Right now would be a great time to make a deal to trade L.T. with a strong game under his belt. Someone will be willing to acquire the former NFL MVP and you should be able to get good value. Make the deal now and fill the holes at other positions in your lineup.

Keep checking back for more football....

FSH: THE FANTASY SPORTS ZONE (FIRE AND ICE)

September 18th, 2009 1:37am PST

Fantasy Football
Fire & Ice

(Your weekly Stock Exchange)

The Hottest Stock this week

If you enjoyed the first week of fantasy football, there’s a good chance that Drew Brees may have had a big hand in that enjoyment. There was no one as hot as the Saints quarterback who threw for over 350-yards and completed 76 percent of his passes while demolishing the Lion’s secondary. Brees very well defined the term “Mr. En Fuego” tossing an incredible six touchdowns on the afternoon.

Week One’s “Mr. En Fuego”

Saints-QB, Drew Brees/358-yards passing, six touchdowns

Aside from your typical weekly stud performers, when playing the fantasy football stock market, the key is finding those gems that are valued low and rising fast. After one week of action there are plenty of stocks to buy low, great ones to sell high, and more importantly we have a few that you might want to consider dumping (sell).

Week One Stock Exchange Notes:

The Quarterbacks...
Fire (Rising stock):
Not noted as a big fantasy scorer, the Steeler’s quarterback Ben Roethlisberger played very well in week one. His 363-passing yards were second most in week one. While Big Ben is a winner, the key for the Steelers is their ball control offense. Right now Ben’s being overvalued; he doesn’t figure to throw the ball 40-plus times week-in and week-out and he’s only finished in the top-10 among fantasy quarterbacks once in the past five seasons.
(sell high)
Ice (falling stock):
Brett Favre’s arm may be surgically repaired, but his skills still need some fixing. The almost 40-year old quarterback looked liked nothing more than a journey man quarterback passing for a mere 110 yards and a touchdown. It may be too soon to panic with Favre’s value dropping. If you own him, keep him benched until further notice. (hold)

The Running Backs...
Fire (Rising stock):
The Buffalo Bills will have a tough decision to make in a couple of weeks when running back Marshawn Lynch returns to the line up. On Monday night against the Patriots, running back Fred Jackson made just his fifth start in the NFL. When Jackson has been featured in the backfield he has played very well and Monday night was no exception (140-total yards). With Lynch due back, head coach Dick Jauron will have to carefully manage Jackson’s playing time. As well as he performed in the “no-huddle offense” the team has to get him on the field often. We can’t imagine his touches diminishing too much, so if you can acquire the former Coe College Kohawk be advised.
(buy low)
Ice (falling stock):
The Redskins running back Clinton Portis has quickly become less than a fan favorite in fantasy football. Last season after a hot start, he broke down raising concern about his durability. Already just one week into the season and Portis is sounding off complaining about aches, pains, and soreness. With only 72 total yards in week one it may be time to move this stock. This early in the season Portis still has value, so before this stock goes belly-up get what you can. (sell)

The Wide Receivers...
Fire (Rising stock):
It’s not often these days you hear anyone endorse any Oakland Raiders offensive players for fantasy football, but rookie receiver Louis Murphy looks like the real deal. The kid is a trailblazer and already seems to have a good chemistry with JaMarcus Russell (if he can just him the ball). Against the Chargers Murphy saw nine balls his direction, so his stock certainly appears promising. Relatively unknown, he’s likely very cheap (and unowned) in many leagues, so now may be the time to strike.
(buy low)
Ice (falling stock):
Surprisingly in the Saints week one thrashing of the Lions, wide receiver Marques Colston was much of a non-factor. The lanky speed merchant caught just three balls for only 30 yards. With such a disappointing week one performance, there are going to be those impatient owners that are going to be willing to deal Colston. It’s really too early to jump off the bandwagon. Colston didn’t have numbers, but he had chances (six targets). If he becomes under-valued in your league and is offered, make a move. This is some stock you need to grab. (buy low)

The Tight Ends...
Fire (Rising stock):
As has been said in the past, one game does not make a career, but there will be those that will run to the waiver wires to grab Patriots tight end Ben Watson. In week one Watson caught six passes for 77 yards, including two scores. This was a monster game for the tight end, who only had one game last season with more than four receptions (just two in 2007). If you own Watson (likely drafted as your TE2), you probably won’t see his value as high as it is right now, if you have need you have a movable commodity.
(sell high)
Ice (falling stock):
When veteran quarterback Brett Favre arrived in Minnesota many fantasy owners assumed that tight end Visanthe Shiancoe would benefit most. Knowing Brett’s love for the tight end position, Shiancoe was expected to be a security blanket for the passing game and a big time scoring threat in the red-zone. After one week with just three catches for 26-yards, fantasy owners are likely scratching their heads and feeling burned by Brett once again. That’s okay fantasy owners, that just means more good news for those that like to go shopping at the market. Disgruntled owners are going to have an easier time letting go of Shiancoe cheap following his week one let down, so go shopping. (
buy low)
