Nicks Getting Close

The Giants explosive wide out Hakeem Nicks has returned to the practice field, albeit in limited fashion, but it’s a step closer to returning to the field of action. Nicks is a big play home run hitter, in two games of action he has 14 receptions for 237 yards and a score. Nicks is so dynamic on the field, if he can get back he’s a must start. Friday’s practice is expected to tell the tale and determine if we’ll see him on Sunday.

Quinn Will Get Start On Sunday

The Chiefs will be without their regular starting quarterback Matt Cassel, who was injured last Sunday versus the Ravens and will start back-up Brady Quinn this Sunday against the Buccaneers. Despite the poor play of Cassel this season (14 turnovers), Quinn is not likely a huge upgrade. Quinn has not started a game since the 2009 season and you have to worry about his chemistry with his receivers. About the only thing that seems certain, expect a lot of Jamaal Charles on Sunday. 

Are They Whispers or Cries for TO?

Right now quarterback Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets have no weapons in the passing game and that’s a fact. When you are bringing your number corner over to the offensive side to run routes, you have problems. Free Agent Terrell Owens certainly looks like he’d be a better option, better than any the Jets currently have. Owens is still a physical specimen and would be an immediate upgrade for the Jets offense. He’s not going to be anyone’s savior, but until something changes in the Jets’ offense the entire squad remains a non-fantasy factor.

BRADY QUINN THROWS FOR A BUNCH...

The Browns saw a little of what they thought they were drafting a year ago in Brady Quinn on Sunday. Although it came at the expense of one of the leagues worst, fantasy owners will take it; Brady tossed four touchdowns and passed for 304 yards. (36 fantasy points)

MATT CASSEL LEADS THE CHIEFS....

The Chiefs pulled off a shocker on Sunday and the arm of Matt Cassel played a big part. Cassel completed only 15 passes, but it was enough for 248 yards, two scores, and of course the win in overtime. (19 fantasy points)

JASON SNELLING GETS CHANCE AND SCORES....

With both Turner and Norwood sidelined running back Jason Snelling had a rare opportunity to be productive. Snelling carried the ball 25 times for 76 yards, added 13 receiving yards, and scored two rushing touchdowns in a rare start. (20 fantasy points)

SIDNEY RICE CONTINUES TO SIZZLE FOR VIKES....

The Vikings receiver continues to have a big 2009 campaign. Following a big receiving day last week, Rice did not disappoint fantasy owners on Sunday catching six balls for 89 yards and two touchdowns. (20 fantasy points)

ALEX SMITH HAS BIG DAY IN LOSS....

With his team trailing most of the afternoon, Smith took advantage in the second half and led a mini charge. Trailing by as much as 30-10, Smith passed for almost all of his 227 yards and threw three second half touchdowns to make the game close at the end. (25 fantasy points)

Some IDP Fantasy Newsmakers…

KEVIN BURNETT LEADS THE BOLTS CHARGE....

The Chargers linebacker was a big IDP play on Sunday recording eight total tackles and registering two sacks on the afternoon.

MICHAEL BOLEY WRECKS HAVOC ON SUNDAY....

The Giants linebacker was a one man wrecking crew on Sunday against the Falcons. IDP owners had to be delighted with his 13 total tackles and two sacks effort in week 11.

LANCE BRIGGS BRINGS THE HEAT ON A COLD SUNDAY NIGHT....

The Bears playmaking linebacker, just kept making plays all evening. Briggs helped to keep this one interesting turning in an 11 total tackles and one sack effort in the losing cause.

More Football news and happenings from aroudn the league; here's the latest I am hearing, reading, and following and my take on things and their fantasy impact this coming Sunday...

Player News and Notes from

Across the Wire...

Quinn to Start for Browns....

The Brown's head coach Eric Magini has announced that he will go with Brady Quinn on Monday night against the Ravens. It probable won't matter who plays, because neither quarterback has played well in 2009, but the benching of Anderson and Magini's endorsement to stick with Quinn the remainder of the season could signal the end of Anderson's tenure in Cleveland. With the league's worst passer rating, he's going to have a tough time finding work elsewhere.

Favre Feeling Better after Bye....

Unlike his stint in New York a year ago, coming off the bye Brett Favre is feeling better and his groin injury seems to be healing well. At 7-1 coming off the bye, with a well rested Favre under center against the Lions this Sunday the Vikings appear poised to seize control of the North and make their run toward the postseason. Last year at this time Favre had 15 touchdowns and 12 picks, this season his ratio (TD-Int) is 16-3.

Edwards expected to Start for Bills....

The Bills quarterback Trent Edwards will return to the starting lineup this Sunday agasint the Titans. The teams passing offense is ranked 30th in the league and is in desperate need of a lift. Edwards has only five touchdown passes to six interceptions this season in six starts.

Owens nursing injury, questionable?.....

The Bills deep passing threat Terrell Owens missed practice on Wednesday and is experiencing bothersome pain in his hip. He was unable to go full-speed, but will test the hip on Thursday. He is currently considered questionable for Sunday against the Titans.

Bears-Niners get ready for Thursday night.....

It's not the battle of Midway, but with Singletary set to face his former team this matchup should be good. Running back Frank Gore coming off a 158 total yards performance with a score could be key against the Bears 21st ranked run defense. Last Sunday the Bears were steam-rolled for 182 net yards rushing by the Arizona Cardinals.

Colston under the weather.....

The Saints fantasy stud receiver Marques Colston skipped practice Wednesday due to the flu according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Reports its not the swine, so with rest Colston who leads the team with six receiving touchdowns should be back for Sunday against the Rams 23rd ranked pass defense.

Jackson playing among the elite....

The Rams may not be winning this season, but that's not stopping their running back Steven Jackson from having a solid season rushing the ball. Jackson ranks second in the league with 970 total yards (784 rushing, 186 receiving). With the Saints 19th ranked run defense next he should eclipse the 1,000 yard barrier with ease.

My Take...

WR DERRICK MASON A QUESTION FOR TRAINING CAMP
My Fantasy Read: The Raven’s veteran receiver is questioning whether he will be ready in time for training camp. It’s never good when a player has doubts, but then Mason is as tough as they come. At his age, it’s probably best he doesn’t take any extra punishment during training camp. Expect him to be ready for the start of the season, but don’t expect the Mason of old. He’ll be consistent, but no better than a WR3 in most fantasy leagues.

RB EDGERRIN JAMES NOT LIKELY TO BE A SAINT SOON
My Fantasy Read: the former Cardinal’s running back is not generating much interest anywhere else and it appears the Saints will take their time. We still have training camps to get through, but the aging veteran running back is likely to have very little fantasy value in most fantasy leagues.

RB LERON MCCLAIN STILL EXPECTED TO GET CARRIES
My Fantasy Read: The Ravens leading running back last season will spend most of 2009 season opening holes for Ray Rice and company, but the newly improved Baltimore fullback is still going to merit some fantasy value. LeRon McClain is still expected to see a lot of short yardage carries as well as goal line totes. Last season the Raven’s runner punched the zone 10 times and he’ll get just as many opportunities in 2009, making him very fantasy relevant.

QB BRADY QUINN LOCKED IN TIGHT RACE
My Fantasy Read: Not exactly what Brady Quinn fans expected from the former 2007 1st round selection. Now entering 3rd season, Brady has yet to crack the starting lineup with any kind of separation. Locked in a closely heated battle with quarterback Derek Anderson, fantasy owners will have to be concerned if Quinn does not win the job outright. Entering his 3rd season in the league, he could see his fantasy stock drop considerably if he starts the season on the sidelines.

TE TODD HEAP BACK ON THE FIELD PRACTICING
My Fantasy Read: The former All-Pro tight end has become somewhat of a forgotten man in fantasy football over the past couple of seasons. Injuries have played a huge part in Heap’s demise, but recently it was reported he was practicing at full strength. While that appears to be good news, fantasy owners won’t relish over it too much. Over the past two seasons Heap has only caught 58 balls and has missed 10 games (all in 2007), although he was banged up often in 2008. His value has sunken to a new low and he’ll likely be overlooked by many in fantasy this season.

2009 Quarterbacks

So now that the NFL Draft is just 25 days away, it's never too early to start looking ahead to the upcoming fantasy season. One of the topics of discussion will not only be the top quarterbacks heading into the 2009 season, but also what rookie quarterbacks might emerge from this year's class.
Will there be any Matt Ryans or Joe Flaccos?

Well before I open that debate, let’s look at last year’s big arms. Drew Brees blew away the competition a year ago passing for over 5,000-yards and tossing a league high 34-touchdowns. While these numbers were far from Tom Brady's 2007 season, they were still quite very impressive. With Brady expected to return in 2009 healthy, but coming back from a severe knee injury, Brees has to be considered the favorite to go as the number fantasy quarterback. He'll have his normal array of weapons, with a healthy Marques Colston, Lance Moore, and healthy Reggie Bush, so fantasy owners can expect another big year from the former Boilermaker.

The debate will open with who is number two. After the impressive run by Batman (Kurt Warner: over 4,500-yards w/30 touchdowns) and Robin (Larry Fitzgerald: 96 receptions for 1,431-yards) down the stretch and into the playoffs last season, Kurt has to be a favorite to go top five and as high as number two. Many will argue that Mr. Tom Brady could take his rightful spot back near the top at number two, especially with all of his tools; Randy Moss and Wes Welker. One never knows how a player will respond coming back from injury, but training camp will definitely be a great place to get a better read, so right now it may be a bit of stretch to put all your eggs in Brady's bunch.

Rounding out the top five should include the consumate professional Peyton Manning, who was dynamite during last season fantasy playoffs, averaging 319.6-yards passing with seven touchdowns and zero turnovers. Now that is money and why he'll be drafted in the top five quarterbacks taken once again in all 2009 fantasy drafts. Another money player down the stretch in 2008 was the Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers. The Bolts leader completed 65 of 101 passes (64%) in his last three games averaging 282-yards per game with nine touchdowns to just one interception.

Certainly this is an impressive list of quarterbacks with more than worthy credentials, but a few names to keep watch for that could make a run to crack the top five in 2009, Jay Cutler (wherever he lands), Aaron Rodgers (a second year at the helm will take him far), Donovan McNabb (if the Eagles get him help outside, he's a shoe in), and Matt Cassel (Brady's understudy ready to take lead role in a new show).

It's always nice to have high hopes for some of the up and coming kids, but there's just too much talent here for names like Ryan, Quinn, or Flacco to make a large enough splash to break in the top five in 2009. This year's crop of freshman like Stafford and Sanchez could find some early playing time, but none figure to have any relevance in fantasy this season.
