Monday Morning Huddle

So What I Saw in Week 6

Sunday week six of the NFL was another fun-filled day of action. With 13 games packed into a short 11 hours starting with the morning schedule and culminating with the weekly Sunday night feature, it's more excitement than a New Years day parade.

With so many games, there was plenty to see;

In Minnesota I saw a Packer legend reach back and find some magic once again, but Green Bay wasn't in town. Wearing his new purple, Brett Favre engineered his 41st 4th quarter comeback of his career.

In New Orleans I watched the Giants defense get blitzed by Drew Brees and the Saints passing game. Entering the game the Giants secondary was ranked first against pass, but they were lit up for 369 yards passing and four touchdowns; so much for their ranking.

In New England I watched Tom Brady and the Patriots absolutely thump the Titans in an early Christmas game. With a snow covered field, Brady and company piled up 59 points and the defense pitched a donut. It was one of the most dominating performances I had ever witnessed; poor Titans.

Worst of the Worst

Sure the Rams are bad, but as bad as they’ve been this season, they may not be the worst team in the NFL. Yeah they’ve dropped sixteen straight, but amidst all of their deficiencies they have come close on a couple of occasions and their 20 points last week says something (not much, but something). Over the last two weeks, one team that has just looked worse is the Washington Redskins. In the last three weeks the Redskins gave the Lions their first win in 20 games and last Sunday they gave the Chiefs their first victory in 2009. Now that’s bad

Jury is still Out

The Jets and Mark Sanchez are done.

It’s a little too late to be counting the rookie out. He’s struggled over the last three weeks with nine turnovers, but head coach Rex Ryan is going to stick with the kid. Although he has not looked very good the past several games, you have to like his chances to improve with a talent like Braylon Edwards coming on board; like a new toy you have to give the rookie time to play with his new toy. It was also quite evident Sanchez is not used to playing in East coast weather with the winds and chills. In the coming weeks Sanchez has the Raiders (ranked 16th against pass), Dolphins (18th), and a bye in week nine. If the Jets can get to the bye at .500 they could be in a good position to make a second half run starting with Jacksonville (ranked 30th) in week 10. It’s not over yet, the jury is still out.

10 Things I Remember From Sunday

(Week 6)

  1. Superman is back as the Patriots quarterback (Brady) passes for a ton of yards (380 yards) and throws a million (six) touchdowns and buries the Titans 59-0.
  2. Aaron Rodgers and the Packer’s passing is lethal as long as he is on his feet and not on his back. Heading into Sunday sacked 20 times, sacked another five times.
  3. The Texans explosive offense loves to play on the road. Matt Schaub is a road-dawg this season averaging 373 yards passing with 10 touchdowns on tour.
  4. Sanchez played more like a rookie against the Bills this past weekend, committing turnover after turnover (five in all).
  5. As long as the Bills have those quarterbacks, Terrell Owens will remain a non-factor in the NFL and in fantasy.
  6. At 31 years of age, running back Thomas Jones is not done yet. His 210 yards this past Sunday are the season high and his 481 total yards rushing and six touchdowns are solid.
  7. The Eagles get stunned by the Raiders, but what is more shocking is the Brian Westbrook’s six carries (for 50 yards). Where was the run game?
  8. The play of Ray Rice has been so impressive (194 total yards and 20 touches), it’s quite apparent that the committee in Baltimore has been disbanded.
  9. The Cardinals looked down earlier this season, but don’t look now Warner and company are back on top (tied for first in West) with a big win over Seattle.
  10. After seeing Cutler talk his way out of Denver, watching the Bears lose on Sunday night is unforgettable.
