THE NFL RETURNS!

After a long break from action, I have returned; just when I thought I was out, they pull me back. After a long hiatus I am back for another exciting season of football action. The Two-minute drill, the big hits, loud crowds, the deep passes, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat; if you are ready so am I.

The 2010 NFL season is here....

[My Take]

More football news and happenings from around the league; here’s the latest I am hearing, reading, and following with my take on things and how they will impact the coming fantasy week……

Player Notes From Across My Wire...

League lowers the Hammer on Big Ben....
The League handed down it's punishment of Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suspending him for six games. The move was expected, but maybe not as harsh although Big Ben will have a chance to have his punishment reduced to four games if he complies with certain league conditions. As a result of the suspension Roethlisberger has become the heavy subject of trade rumors and his fantasy stock is tumbling by the second.

Owens the latest subject in DC...
There is nothing imminent going on in DC, in fact there's not a lot of activity at the moment, but with quarterback Donovan McNabb endorsing the acquisition of wide receiver Terrell Owens it could be a matter of time before we see some action. Head Coach Mike Shanahan has no interest in signing the outspoken Owens, but with the draft less than 24 hours away a lot could change. Owens opposite Santana Moss just sounds like a good move, but we'll have to wait and see.

Holt joins the Pats....
The former Pro Bowl receiver Torry Holt signed a one year deal with the New England Patriots adding some depth and veteran experience to motley cast of receivers. Holt won't be reborn in Foxboro playing behind Moss and Welker, but he'll fit in nicely and add another reliable set of hands. Expect Holt to have limited value seeing limited snaps behind the Pats top twosome of Moss and Welker. With Edelman playing well last season in the absence of Welker, Holt will have to compete for the number three spot.

IDP Notes

Vikings add some help to secondary...
The Vikings undoubtedly are trying to improve one of its weak links from a year ago. There's no question when Antoine Winfield went down last season the Vikings secondary struggled mightily. With the signing of former Eagles (and Jets last season) cornerback Lito Sheppard (19 career interceptions), the team is hopeful that it has addressed some of those issues. The former Pro Bowler gives the defense added depth and adds another playmaker in the secondary.

Taylor crosses the line, turns gang-green...
Despite all of the things he has said in the past about the fans in New York, linebacker Jason Taylor has signed with the Jets. Taylor has agreed to a two-year deal and will join a very aggressive Rex Ryan defensive scheme. Expect Taylor's value in IDP leagues to rise come draft time.

Movement, Movement, Movement

Again with the recent headlines (last week) circulating from the world of football there has been more changes that will have a big impact on the coming fantasy season. This past week the wide receiver position has been the pick of the litter and with that, there could be more to come.

Recent Moves...
The last couple of weeks there have been some big moves made in the NFL, some surprising and others not so much, but either way these moves are going to have a big impact on fantasy going forward.

In Pittsburgh, the Steelers needing some damage control unloaded their former Super Bowl MVP wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets. Holmes was dealt for only a 5th round pick, undoubtedly it was a business decision to move forward without the risky proposition (Holmes) who will face a four game suspension at the start of the 2010 season. A new home, a new quarterback, and a suspension will no doubt hurt Holmes fantasy value greatly at fantasy drafts, but owners mustn’t forget his 79 catches and 1,200 yards in 2009. Lining up with Edwards and Cotchery, Santonio could be a huge second half play this coming season.

In Denver the Broncos finally say good-bye to their two time Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall (three straight seasons with at least 100 receptions). While the move could be heavily criticized, it appeared to be the best for all concerned; Marshall wanted out and the Broncos wanted to move on. Denver dealt the outspoken receiver to the Dolphins for a pair of second round picks (one this season, one in 2011) and could be looking to make a run at one of the top WR draft prospects in this year's draft. With Marshall moving south to the sunshine state (Florida) his stock may take a slight hit, but quarterback Chad Henne could see a rise in his value. Henne comes off a season where he threw 12 touchdowns. Last season Marshall had 10 alone. It would be safe to expect to see Henne improve his numbers this coming season.

Players to watch...

With the draft now just days away, don't expect activity in the NFL to slow down. Just Monday the Broncos continued to stay busy trading tight end Tony Scheffler away to the Lions as part of a three team deal that included the Eagles. The Broncos received a 5th round pick (from the Eagles), while the Lions sent Ernie Sims to Philly in exchange for the acquisition of Scheffler.

This was just some early movement for draft week, but a couple of names to keep on your radar with the draft coming up quickly would include; Jets running Leon Washington (signed tender), Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell (rumored to be on trade block), Bear's tight end Greg Olsen (not happy in windy city), and surprise, surprise (according to ESPN's Adam Schefter) the Dolphin's running back Ronnie Brown. This of course is all speculation, but as the draft approaches, we could see conversations heat up and rumors fly. Stay tuned for the NFL draft 2010.

What's the Latest

Marshall goes to Miami...

Well it came as little surprise the trading of Brandon Marshall (10 touchdowns in 2009), but how quickly it was done and to whom he was traded may have raised a few eyebrows. Marshall (10 touchdowns in 2009) had lobbied last season (with Denver) for a trade and last week the Broncos obliged by trading the two-time Pro Bowl receiver to Miami for a pair of second round picks.

For the Dolphins they acquire a legit go-to receiver and raise the fantasy stock value of their 3rd year quarterback Chad Henne. Last season Henne through just 12 touchdowns, but with Marshall's large frame that should instantly add a few more to the total for 2010.

Niners pick up Ginn...

With the arrival of Marshall to Miami, it became time for the Phins to part ways with wide receiver Tedd Ginn Jr. The Dolphins already had Ginn on the block, but once they pulled the trigger on other deal this move was much easier to execute. The Niners gave a 5th round pick for Ginn and get not only some added depth at the receiver spot, but some playmaking ability on special teams.

Ginn is an exceptional special teams talent. In three seasons with the Dolphins he has three returns for touchdowns, including two in 2009. He will add a dimension to the Niners that was missing last season. He also has the talent and ability to challenge for the starting job opposite wide receiver Crabtree.

Big Ben likely to face punishment...

Despite no criminal charges being filed, the whole sticky mess that Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has gotten himself into will cost him dearly. According to "The National Football Post" NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said today that Big Ben has violated the NFL's personal conduct policy.

Big Ben was under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a 20-year old Georgia woman. He was not charged, but is now likely to face a league suspension for his involvement with the whole incident. There has yet to be any speculation for the length of the penalty, but considering the sensitivity and nature of this particular situation four games would not come as a surprise.

The Washington Post is reporting the suspension could come down as early as Wednesday.

Quarterbacks on the Rise....

With the recent headlines circulating from the world of football there has been a lot of changes that could have a big impact on the coming fantasy season. The most notable changes made thus far this offseason could have a great impact on several signal callers.

On the Rise...

With the acquisition of wide receiver Anquan Boldin, Donte Stallworth, and the re-signing of veteran wideout Derrick Mason, the Joe Flacco stock appears to be soaring. In a predominant run-system Flacco (21 touchdown passes in 2009) was a decent number two fantasy quarterback last season. With the team has adding some new weapons this offseason to give the passing game a boost and the emergence of running back Ray Rice (78 receptions) 2010 could be a breakout season for Flacco.

The most recent move to make headlines has been the Jets acquisition of wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Added to a talented corp of receivers that include Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards, quarterback Mark Sanchez could quickly become a popular pick come fantasy draft time. The former Trojan quarterback had his ups and downs in 2009 (12 touchdown passes, 20 interceptions), but with a solid running game (ranked number one last season) and more talent on the outside Sanchez could be a late sleeper in his sophomore campaign.

Now finally out of the shadow of Donovan McNabb, fourth year quarterback Kevin Kolb inherits a fine cast of receivers that include DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, and Brent Celek; this will surely bolster his stock value. With just two career starts under his belt Kolb is going to suffer through some growing pains in 2010, but with a great supporting cast he could be another late sleeper.

Falling down the Charts...

Not all these moves of the current offseason appear to be paying off for everyone. In Washington Jason Campbell is now a fantasy stock in serious trouble of crashing. With McNabb in place as the starter, unless Campbell can find work as a starter somewhere else he'll have virtually no fantasy value around draft time.

With Pete Carroll shaking things up in Seattle with the acquisition of quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, the Matt Hasselbeck stock is starting to look even shakier. There's no question given Hasselbeck's recent injury history his stock is risky at best, but add a new coach, a new system, and some competition and his stock value takes a hit. Expect the better Whitehurst looks this summer the more Hasselbeck's value will fall.

With a lot of recent trade rumors at the quarterback position including the Bills, the stock value of Trent Edwards will continue to tumble this offseason. McNabb was rumored before eventually landing in DC, names like Jason Campbell continue to circulate. Last year Edwards threw just six touchdowns in seven starts, probably not enough to guarantee him a job in 2010. With an open competition this training camp his stock will remain very shaky and a high risk with no reason to believe there's a big pay-off in the future.

Just my current take on some of 2010's fantasy quarterbacks.
