THE ATL REPORT

Around the League

QB Kyle Orton struggles badly in preseason opener….
The Bronco’s projected starting quarterback played very poorly in the team’s preseason opener and coupled with Chris Simms impressive play it appears we may have a quarterback controversy brewing in the Mile High City. Following his dismal performance, Orton may have just lost all of his fantasy stock. He still has a chance to be a sleeper and now could come very cheap as a late round pick-up.

RB Peyton Hillis sees plenty of action in opener.…
The Bronco’s starting Full-back and H-back saw plenty of carries and touches in the team’s Friday night preseason opener. Many folks are not giving Hillis much fantasy consideration, but he could easily figure in the mix and work nicely as a late round RB3 pick-up.

WR Michael Crabtree remains a hold-out…..
The Niner’s rooke receiver remains at home holding out for a big payday. While he continues to wait for the team to blink, his fantasy value is continuing to dwindle. Crabtree becomes a very risky fantasy pick-up at this point. Even if he signs in the near future, his value is very skewed, except for dynasty and keeper leagues, where he still has considerable value.

QB Sage Rosenfels takes hold of the position…
The Viking’s starting quarterback Sage Rosenfels played very well in the team’s preseason opener and may have just created a bit more separation between he and back Tarvaris Jackson. Rosenfels completed 10-of-13 for 91 yards and is the current favorite to win the starting job. Rosenfels isn’t likely to be a fantasy stud in 2009, but he has enough upside to consider a fantasy sleeper.

RB LaDanian Tomlinson expects to play tonight….
The Charger’s starting running back is saying he expects to play tonight, which is a big surprise, considering he hasn’t seen preseason action in years. The team is always concerned with keeping LT fresh and healthy, so if he does play it will likely only be a few plays. Tomlinson appears healthy and despite his fall down the ADP charts, he’s still a top-10 fantasy back and worthy of an early selection.

QB Mark Sanchez looks impressive in preseason debut….
The Jet’s rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez made a nice bid to be the team’s starter with his impressive play in his first NFL action. Sanchez was limited to just a few snaps on Friday night, but he made the most of his opportunity completing 3-of-4 passes for 88 yards. Following that performance Sanchez looks like the favorite to win the job, but he’ll have little fantasy value to start the season.

RB Knowshon Moreno will likely sit the preseason….
The Bronco’s rookie running back suffered a mild MCL sprain and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks. The rookie is McDaniel’s prized pick, don’t expect to see the team rush him back soon, but he should be ready for the team’s season opener. With the temporary setback, Moreno is best viewed as a mid to low RB3 in fantasy drafts.

TE Brent Celek banged up in preseason opener….
The Eagles tight end suffered a minor shoulder injury in the team’s preseason opener and missed practice on Saturday. The injury is not being reported as serious, so he’s expected to return to the practice field soon. With L.J. gone, Celek will be the reliable target over the middle for McNabb. He’s viewed as a mid TE2, but after his impressive post season run, he could very well be a fantasy sleeper in wait.

QB Tom Brady shakes the rust and throws a pair….
Despite all the time missed from recovering from major knee surgery, Tom Brady stepped into his first action since Week one of 2008 and threw a pair of touchdowns. Brady is quickly removing any doubt as to whether he’ll be ready to return to form in 2009. He’s still a slight risk at a high draft spot, but he comes with tremendous upside.
