Monday Morning Huddle
So What I Saw in Week 5
Still undefeated and Still Perfect!!….
With five weeks in the books there are four teams in the league that boast a perfect 5-0 record. While there are many prognosticators that have their doubts about the legitimacy of the Denver Broncos, few can argue that at 5-0 it’s hard to deny what your team has accomplished. Rounding out the 5-0 teams are the Colts, Giants, and Vikings. The Colts have been the most explosive, the Vikings every bit impressive, but it’s been the Giants that have been the most balanced. Not to forget anyone the Saints are also 4-0 and with a week six meeting with the Giants, we’ll soon find out who’s telling the truth and who’s pretending.
Perfection is not an easy thing to attain or to maintain in the NFL; next Sunday the Broncos face another big hurdle with a divisional matchup with the Chargers, while the Vikings will play host to the Baltimore Ravens. The Colts will enjoy their bye. Week six should be very telling with these pivotal matchups and give us a very good look at which teams we might be seeing in January.
The Falcons look fine in 2009….
It’s amazing how the bye week can fix things in a hurry. The Falcons were 2-1 coming off a disappointing 26-10 road loss to the Patriots and as a result there were a lot of questions surrounding their offense. On Sunday quarterback Matt Ryan and wide receiver Roddy White found a lot of the answers. Ryan was solid completing 22 of 32 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns, while his number one target was superb catching eight of those passes for 210 yards. White also scored twice to help the offense score 45 points and total 477 yards. The running game was anchored by Michael Turner and his 97 yards and two touchdowns; so what’s the problem?
Worst of the Worst
Following their thumping by the Giants on Sunday by a score of 44-7, many would argue that the Raiders are still the worst of the worst. If you watched the Bills and Browns game, it’s pretty clear that either of these teams could fit that billing just the same. Both the Browns and Bills combined for a total of nine points and together converted only 10 of 33 third downs. The Raider’s weren’t much better managing a single touchdown and converting only one of 11 tries on third down. It’s a long season, but for these teams it may be too long.
Jury is still Out
The AFC East is up for Grabs!!
Before we go ahead and crown the second coming of “Broadway Joe” or announce that Tom Brady is back, it looks like the Dolphins have decided to throw their hats in the ring. With the Monday night game just concluded it is quite evident that none of the teams in the East have a firm grasp hold and that this season the division will be up for grabs. Another thing we viewed tonight was the emergence of possibly another new young star, quarterback Chad Henne. With two consecutive wins as a starter, head coach Tony Sparano and his fish may have just found their quarterback of the future.
10 Things I Remember From Sunday
(Week 5)
- Tom Brady is human. Against the Bronco’s on Sunday he was not able to engineer one of his infamous 4th quarter comebacks.
- The Bills and Brown’s game was one of the worst games I have ever seen; let’s forget in a while, ever.
- The Cowboys are just not a good as they should be, but they do have a lot of talent on offense; case and point Autins Miles and his 250 yards.
- Steven Jackson is more than a man. Against the Viking’s eight and nine man fronts he was still able to grind out 84 yards on the ground.
- Donovan McNabb is not close to being done yet and with a full compliment of weapons they will be the rest of the way.
- It looks like the old men can still play. Brett Favre has been saccurate this season (104.1 passer rating), while Kurt Warner seems to be finding his football legs with his big game in week 5.
- Peyton Manning is king, in case you doubted him; averaging 329 yards passing with 12 touchdowns this season.
- Kyle Orton; the fantasy sleeper is finally awake. On Sunday Orton completed 35 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns; now this is what we were expecting.
- Knowshon Moreno knows how to run, but he’d better learn how to hang onto the ball or he’ll be “Know-ing” how to sit.
- Matt Hasselbeck is an elite quarterback; he passed for 241 yards and threw four touchdowns on Sunday. Now if he can just stay healthy.
