WATERCOOLER CHAT
With the Waiver Wire moving full speed ahead fantasy owners are going to have to dig deep to find the needed talent if they’re to survive the marathon season that is fantasy football. Always taking a look across the league, our pal Wayne tells us which players are the ones you should be targeting for your week five waiver moves;
Week Five
If you were watching Monday night football, you might have thought you were watching a star is born with the great play of Packer tight end Jermichael Finley. The 2nd year tight end played sensational making one big catch after another and even more impressive were his moves after the catch. Finley caught six balls on the night and dashed his way to 128 yards (21.3 yards per catch). The highlight of the kid’s night was an impressive 62 yard catch and run for a score. With so much attention going to the Packers talented wideouts, look for more to come from Finley.
If there is a blue print to attack the Seahawks defense there is no better architect to study than quarterback Peyton Manning. After coming off his best passing day of the season (27 of 37 passing) Jaguar’s quarterback David Garrard looks like a pretty good prospect heading into week 5. Last Sunday Garrard passed for 323 yards and completed passes to eight different receivers. On the season, Garrard has been efficient completing nearly 60 percent of his passes and throwing 5 touchdowns to only one interception. This week he’ll see the leagues 16th ranked pass defense.
After his breakout game in Week four against Cincinnati, it hard to ignore wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi. Against the Bengals the rookie receiver snagged eight passes for 148 yards, but most impressive was the precise route running clutch grabs. With Anderson under center there seems to be great chemistry and his 13 targets on Sunday would indicate a greater chance to succeed.
“Wayne’s Word”
Once again always looking for the hottest pickups each week, Wayne offers his best options with his weekly “Wayne’s Word.” This week he eyes one receiver that has to be the talk of fantasy towne, the Viking’s third year wideout Sidney Rice. While his arrival may seem overdue, for many young receivers it has typically been the third year when they begin to reach their potential. Overdue or on time the fact is the time is now. Rice has looked good over the past couple of weeks (9 catches, 126 yards, 2 touchdowns) and more importantly quarterback Brett Favre has looked for Rice more over the past two weeks (15 times). Now is the time to grab the 6’4” rising star.
Playing the Fantasy GM
There’s always a time to reach for the clouds, a time to take a chance, a time cut your losses, and a time to put them on the shelf for now. With certain high profile players not performing to par, how long do you wait before giving up?
The GM Game
It’s never an exact science to know when to pull the plug and when to tough it out, so you have to look carefully at the situation when making this big decision. It’s always tough to carry dead weight and with limited roster space you can’t have players riding for free, but in the case of a very select few putting them on the shelf makes good sense.
In Denver a new offense, a new quarterback, and some preseason turmoil had things completely upside down for a while. Last year as a rookie wide receiver Eddie Royal caught 91 passes for 980 yards, but this season it has been slim pickens for the Bronco’s second year wideout. With only eight catches this season and the offense still searching to find it’s stride in the passing game, for the moment the right move is to put Royal on the shelve. With Marshall suddenly becoming a factor once again, defenses are going to have to start turning their attention. This could happen sooner or later, but before we go through another one catch for four yards performance, sit Royal and wait until he starts producing.
The same can be said for Bill’s wide receiver Terrell Owens. He too is in a new system catching balls from a new quarterback. Clearly after four games this season, there’s no chemistry between his new field general and himself. What also seems apparent is quarterback Trent Edwards lack of trust in throwing the deep ball. Right now the Bill’s offense looks stagnate and inept at times. With the team struggling and a quarterback change in order (whether it happens or not we’ll see), for now the safe move is to sit Owens until Edwards and the passing game can show some life.
