THE FANTASY E.R.
Week Five Surprises & "Eyebrow Raisers"
As we close the books for week 5, once again we take a look at some of the surprising performances from those players that some fantasy owners and experts may have discounted, overlooked, and even discarded heading into this weekends' games. We you take a look at the names of some of these players, that I like to call "eyebrow raisers" and you will find these are the same players you should be looking for in your coming week's waiver wire.
When you go "Searching your scrap heaps" this week, always consider the circumstance when evaluating a players value. Fliers like Moss in New York or Breaston in Arizona may be sitting in a limited window, while others like Jones, Faulk, and Bradshaw, may have just been a one week beneficiary. but of course there are those that could be on the verge of becoming fantasy relevant like a Camarillo or Hixon.
Moving forward, here are the week 5 surprise performances from some of the not-quite-ready for "Prime-Time" Fantasy Players.
RB-DEANGELO WILLIAMS (CAR)
Perhaps Sunday's biggest surprise came in Carolina. With much of the talk leading up to the Panthers-Chiefs tilt on Sunday surrounding Carolina's rookie running back, DeAngelo Williams turned in a performance that had to catch the attention of many football fans and fantasy owners alike. Williams carried the ball 20 times, rushed for more than 100 yards, totaled more than 145 yards of offense and scored three times in the Panthers romp over the Chiefs. If this didn't raise your eyebrow, it's doubtful anything will.
RB-FELIX JONES (DAL)
Following last Sunday where he did not record a single carry or reception, the Cowboys' rookie running back bounced back in week 5 with a surprising performance. Jones had 9 carries on the day and gained 96 yards on the ground, which included a 33 yard touchdown run that raised everyone's eyebrows. (15-FPTs)
WR-SINORICE MOSS (NYG)
The Giants lose Plax for one game and a couple find hidden gems on their bench. Getting a chance to be more involved on Sunday, the Giants WR Sinorice Moss raised many eyebrows catching 4 passes for 45 yards and scoring twice. Before Sunday Moss only had 1 catch. (16-FPTs)
RB-KEVIN FAULK (NE)
The Patriots running back has a surprisingly very productive day for fantasy owners taking a chance on him as a flier. Faulk did see many touches on Sunday, but when he got them he made all of them count. Faulk had 7 carries for 32 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also added 4 receptions for 29 yards. (17-FPTs)
WR-GREG CAMARILLO (MIA)
The Dolphins stunned the football world on Sunday upsetting the San Diego Chargers 17-10 and WR Greg Camarillo surprised many fantasy owners with a nice fantasy day. Camarillo caught 6 balls for 68 receiving yards and a touchdown! (12-FPTs)
RB-TIM HIGHTOWER (ARI)
The Cardinals touchdown specialist and rookie running back Tim Hightower turned in his best game of the year on Sunday against the Bills. The rookie carried the ball for 7 times for 37 yards (5.3 yds/carry) and scored two touchdowns. (15-FPTs)
WR-DOMENIK HIXON (NYG)
Let it be known that Fox Sports Analysts and former New York Giant, Michael Strahan called his shot prior to kick-off on Sunday, when he claimed that WR Domenik Hixon "is a playmaker and will score today!" He also added he would have a big day. Hixon finished with 4 catches for 102 yards and a score raising many eyebrows. I guess Strahan knows what he is talking about. I want to be like Mike! (16-FPTs)
WR-BRANDON STOKLEY (DEN)
Would anyone give me props for this call, not that I need that. I am just happy that the Broncos won (yes I am a Bronco fan). Fantasy owners needing a serviceable fill in got more than they could have hoped for if they played Broncos' WR Brandon Stokley. Stokley raised a few eyebrows on Sunday catching 6 passes for 52 yards with a score! (11-FPTs)
More notable surprises from some fantasy "Hidden-Jewels"
**The Packers TE Donald Lee, relatively quiet thus far this season, stepped up on Sunday and found pay dirt once in the team's loss. Lee finished with only 4 catches and 25 yards, but did have his score. (8-FPTs)
**The Eagles WR Reggie Brown had his second consecutive productive game of receiving hauling in 4 passes for 84 receiving yards in week 5. Over the past two weeks, Brown has totaled 10 receptions for 163 yards raising an eyebrow or two. (8-FPTs)
**The Cardinals WR Steve Breaston played well on Sunday as the newly inserted starter replacing the injured Anquan Boldin. Breaston caught 7 passes for 77 yards turning in a solid receiving day. (7-FPTs)
**The Buccaneers WR Ike Hilliard made a little noise on Sunday maximizing his opportunities. Hilliard only caught four balls for 29 yards, but did find the end-zone. (8-FPTs)
**The Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw got into the mix on Sunday and surprised owners with a nice day. Bradshaw carried the ball 11 times for 65 yards. (6-FPTs)
**The Seahawks WR Bobby Engram made his 2008 season debut on Sunday against the Giants and surprised owners by jumping right back into the mix with 8 catches for 61 yards. Not a great game, but a good start for fantasy owners. (6-FPTs)
**The Titan's TE Bo Scaife awoke from his slumber in week 5 just in time to pull in 7 passes for 72 yards on Sunday. It was his first big game receiving since week one. (7-FPTs)
**noted scoring based on standard rules.
