The Rookie Report
(The 2009 Class)

This Year’s Class is Shinning with Prospects

The 2009 class will not have any shortages of new stars in the league this season. With players like Sanchez, Coffee, and Maclin making an impression this preseason, fantasy owners will be scrambling to find the next up and coming rising star in the NFL.

The Quarterbacks….
With so much attention surrounding the Lions top draft selection quarterback Matthew Stafford on draft day, many may be surprised that these days it’s the Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez grabbing most of the headlines. Sanchez has been the pick of the litter thus far, but Stafford will have his time soon enough. Others rookie quarterbacks that could get a chance at some action this season and be worth watching include; Josh Freeman (TB) and Chase Daniel (Was).

The Running backs….
2009 will be an interesting season to watch the rookie runners as this year is deep with talent. With players like James Davis (Cle), Mike Goodson (Car), and Glenn Coffee (SF) drawing so much attention, it will be tough to keep these kids off the field. All three have been impressive this preseason and are strong candidates to figure in the regular mix this season. A couple of rookies that will definitely be fantasy worthy in 2009 are the Colts rookie Donald Brown and the Eagles rookie LeSean McCoy. Both backs have already shown ability and skill that will warrant time on the field. Chris Wells in Arizona is off to a slow start, but watch the kid it may only be a matter of time before we see a lot of him. Other notables to watch include; Knowshon Moreno (Den), Bernard Scott (Cin), and Shonn Greene (NYJ) are just a few.

The Wide receivers….
This may be the one position in this year’s class that is lacking more of the quality depth fantasy owners might be looking for. While there is plenty of talent available, there are no sure things just lots of promise. Leading the way in this year’s batch of rookie “sure hands” is the Giant’s rookie receiver Hakeem Nicks. With an opportunity to play the kid has looked dynamite and may have the best chance to make an immediate impact this season. Without any proven talent (except an injury prone Javon Walker) in front of him, the Raiders other rookie receiver Louis Murphy is trying his best to make a huge impression. Other youngsters that will be demanding some consideration as the season progresses along include; Jeremy Maclin (Phi), Deon Butler (Sea), Brian Robiskie (Cle), Kenny Britt (Ten), Johnny Knox (Chi), and Kenny McKinley (Den) to name a few.

The tight ends….

Never one of your more productive positions in fantasy, nonetheless the tight end spot will still demand as much attention as any other. Most teams do not feature this position in the passing game, so there is a deficiency of fantasy options available. While owners may pass on some of these rookies there are still some talented players to eye. Notables that will be on the radar include; Brandon Pettigrew (Det), Jared Cook (Ten), Shawn Nelson (Buf), and Chase Coffman (Cin).
