FSH NOTEBOOK: THE MORNING HUDDLE

September 22nd, 2011 Thursday

The Morning Huddle
Thursday Edition

As the 2011 fantasy season continues to pick up speed and grow momentum, we are quickly seeing that this year is truly becoming the “year of the quarterback.” Over the first two weeks of this young season we have seen the most passing yards in one week this league has ever seen; and we have now seen it twice in consecutive weeks.

What to make of it, the obvious is the new league rules or modified rules implemented to protect the quarterbacks and defenseless receivers would seem to favor the offense greatly. If this is the case, get ready for more explosive offense coming your way in the coming weeks, but before we start to look too far ahead, we should at least recognize what we have already seen;

Breaking Down the QB’s

If you thought the Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton was solid in week one, how about his week two encore with over 400 yards passing and two more touchdowns (one passing, one rushing). Newton is quickly becoming a mainstay in fantasy lineups; it may be something some owners may want to hold off on for the moment, but with over 800 yards passing, over 70 yards rushing, and five total touchdowns, how much longer can you keep him on your bench?

There’s little doubt that the Bills gun slinging quarterback Ryan Ritzpatrick was not drafted as your starter, but after seven passing touchdowns (tied for NFL league) in the first two games this season, it is becoming difficult to keep him on your bench. One of the Fitzpatrick’s more impressive stats is his 5 for 5 scoring drives in the second half of week two’s matchup against the Raiders. That kind of production efficiency will always earn you lots of fantasy points!

After his first two weeks of play it becomes difficult to not recognize Matt Hasselbeck’s re-emergence among the top half of passers in the league. Hasselbeck had a very decent week one performance; it was not bad at all, but it was nothing like week two against the Ravens. In week two, the Titan’s starter passed for more than 350 yards completing 30 of 42 passes and adding one touchdown toss. It was not a breakout performance by any stretch, but it is an attention grabber and great indicator that more good numbers are on the way.

Now we can’t talk about performances or quarterbacks without at least showing some respect to the Patriots quarterback Tom Brady; he once again delivered a huge performance in week two. Like Brady, a couple of arms that deserve some fantasy recognition include Matt Stafford (4 touchdown passes), Tony Romo (300 yards passing and one heroic effort on Sunday), and Philip Rivers (another 350+ yards with two touchdowns).

FSH NOTEBOOK: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

September 21ST, 2011 Wednesday

David’s Daily Digest
Fantasy Notes:

Foster Does Not Practice
What most fantasy folks may have figured, the Texans running back Arian Foster was limited this week in practice and does not look good to play on Sunday. This is great news for fantasy owners that have been teetering back and forth with back up Ben Tate and Foster. It appears Tate will be the starter this week and he should be in most fantasy lineups. Tate has been solid this season racking up 219 yards on the ground and figures to carry the brunt of the load this week against the Saints.

Kenny Britt limited with Hamstring Injury
According to Britt the hamstring injury is the same as the one that hampered him during the preseason, but what I have been reading it does not sound serious or anything to be concerned about. Britt has been a beast in the passing game for the Titans and is now a fantasy must start every week. Next up for Britt the Broncos secondary that was just torched for 385 yards in week 2.

Newton sets his sights for the Jags
It’s starting to look like rather than opposing defenses having a target on the Panthers rookie quarterback each week, Cam Newton is measuring up his gridiron foes for destruction. In just two weeks Newton has passed for over 800 yards and rushed for another 71; he has also accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). Newton looks like a dynamic playmaker and this Sunday appears to be another opportunity for him to showcase his talents; if you are not starting him, better get him in your lineup.

Matthews quietly Becoming PPR Stud
Ryan Matthews may be splitting time in the backfield with Mike Tolbert this season, but with his lack of carries (just 24 this season) he is quickly making up for it in the passing game. In the team’s first two games this season Matthews has already collected 10 balls for 135 yards. With that kind of production, Matthews could quickly become a fantasy gem in most PPR formats, especially if he can start finding the end-zone more often.

FSH NOTEBOOK: SUNDAY'S HEROES (WEEK 2)

September 21ST, 2011, Wednesday

Sunday’s Heroes (Week 2)

Who is Making Fantasy Headlines in 2011
[Points based on standard scoring]

NEWTON TOPS CHARTS AGAIN
The Panthers have found themselves a gem of a quarterback in Cam Newton. In his first two starts this season he has simply been magical, posting some incredible numbers. Sure there have been a few growing pains (four turnovers), but fantasy owners can’t complain about his production. In week two Newton passed for another 432 yards added 53 more yards on the ground and scored twice (one passing, one rushing). His season total is now at five touchdowns and you can expect a lot more going forward. (28 fantasy points)

STAFFORD CONTINUES TO SIZZLE
The Lions are on a roll and 3rd year quarterback Matthew Stafford is roaring loudest with his arm. After a strong performance back in week one Stafford backed up his play with another stellar game in week 2. The young Lion threw four touchdown passes and 294 yards passing on Sunday and looks poised to have many more afternoons like this one. (33 fantasy points)

PETERSON IS A MAN AMONG BOYS
The Vikings running back Adrian Peterson plowed his way through the Buccaneers defense on Sunday for 120 yards on the ground averaging nearly five yards per carry. Peterson also added two more rushing touchdowns to his totals to lead the ground assault. Right now Peterson is a beast on the field with no equal; the number one fantasy running back in most formats. (26 fantasy points)

VINCENT FLYS HIGH ON SUNDAY
The Chargers explosive receiver was pure TNT on Sunday, scorching the Patriots secondary for big play after big play. Jackson caught 10 balls for 172 yards in the air and scored twice to lead the Bolts. Jackson looked unstoppable on Sunday and should be viewed as one of the league’s elite pass-catchers going forward; expect more big games. (29 fantasy points)

FITZPATRICK KEEPS THE HOT HAND
The Bills have found their Jim Kelly replacement in quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The signal caller is off to a fast start this season and last week’s stat line is a good indication of how hot he is; three touchdowns and 264 yards passing. Fitzpatrick’s seven passing touchdowns tops the list in the NFL (tied with Stafford and Brady), but it remains to be seen if he can continue this torrid pace. (28 fantasy points)

MACLIN SHINES AGAINST THE FALCONS
It may have been all the attention the defense paid to shutting down wide receiver DeSean Jackson, but nonetheless you can hardly argue the effort turned in by Eagles wide out Jeremy Maclin. The stud receiver was just that Sunday night grabbing 13 balls for 171 yards receiving with two touchdowns to lead the Eagles passing attack. (29 fantasy points)

The IDP Fantasy Newsmakers

HARPER PLAYS BIG IN SAINTS WIN
The Saints safety recorded two sacks to go with seven tackles to lead the team in its’ big win over the visiting Bears. Harper also added a forced fumble for good measure. The Saints defensive back is off to a fast start with 16 total tackles and 2-1/2 sacks in two games and looks like a fantasy IDP gem in the early part of this season.

BISHOP IS QUIETLY BECOMING A STAR
The Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop is churning out solid performances with regularity. After a strong week one showing, Bishop came back with another nine tackles and one sack in a week two victory over the Panthers. Bishop appears to be a staple in the Packers defense unit and should continue to be a strong IDP option throughout the season.

FSH NOTEBOOK: SUNDAY GAMETIME

September 18TH, 2011 Sunday

Sunday Morning Gametime

There’s no doubt that the NFL got off to a high flying start in week one and if you are thinking that the offenses might become a little grounded in week 2, don’t hold your breath. With the Bolts of San Diego and Philip Rivers (335 yards passing) traveling to Foxboro to face Tom Brady (517 yards passing) this matchup promises to be filled with plenty of fireworks. It’s not just the high profile contests that will generate lots of fantasy scoring, but there are quite a few enticing matchups today that will garner plenty of attention.

Watch-list

Last week the quarterback Matt Stafford (three touchdown passes) started off with a hot hand on the road against the Buccaneers. This week the young Lion will be at home and have a very tasty matchup against a Chiefs secondary that yielded four touchdowns a week ago.

Like Stafford, I like quarterback Rex Grossman to back up his week one success with another strong outing against a very shaky Cardinals’ secondary that allowed over 400 yards passing in week one. Grossman might not have a ton of yards, but he’ll connect in the end-zone a number of times.

After their dismal start a week ago against the Ravens, I am expecting a big day from Steelers’ running back Rashard Mendenhall. A week ago Mendenhall only gained 45 yards on 12 carries, fantasy owners can look forward to both of those numbers increasing significantly today when the Steelers host the Seahawks.

On Monday the great play of Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall was overshadowed by huge games turned in by the Patriots offense. Marshall was solid out of the gate with seven catches for over 100 yards. He could see similar results today against a Texans secondary that allowed over 100 yards receiving to Colts wide out Reggie Wayne.

One more player to watch today is Browns’ running back Peyton Hillis. Last week against the Bengals Hillis was held in check limited to just 57 yards on the ground. Today he faces the Colts run defense that surrendered 167 yards on the ground last week, so look for Hillis to get things rolling today.

Today’s Fantasy notes:

Today’s 20 Fantasy Quarterbacks (Week 2)

1. Matt Stafford (Lions)
2. Aaron Rodgers (Packers)
3. Tom Brady (Patriots)
4. Drew Brees (Saints)
5. Michael Vick (Eagles)
6. Philip Rivers (Chargers)
7. Matt Schaub (Texans)
8. Tony Romo (Cowboys)
9. Joe Flacco (Ravens)
10. Jay Cutler (Bears)
11. Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers)
12. Kyle Orton (Broncos)
13. Rex Grossman (Redskins)
14. Matt Ryan (Falcons)
15. Josh Freeman (Buccaneers)
16. Eli Manning (Giants)
17. Kevin Kolb (Cardinals)
18. Mark Sanchez (Jets)
19. Cam Newton (Panthers)
20. Donovan McNabb (Vikings)

My Picks Today

My “Four Horsemen”

Matt Schaub; It’s hard not to like a quarterback that gets to face a defense that just allowed over 500 yards passing a week ago.

Rashard Mendenhall; The Steelers were embarrassed a week ago, I expect them to really try to imp0se their will and pound the ball. I am looking for a lot of Mendenhall today.

Stevie Johnson; The Bills are hot at the moment coming off an impressive win last week; they will try to build off this momentum today by attacking the Raiders questionable secondary. I expect Stevie Johnson to see plenty of chances today to find the end-zone.

Dustin Keller; I missed my pick here last week, but today against the Jaguars I like Keller to pick up the slack in the passing game with an ailing Santonio Holmes.
