That's My Take

Could Boldin land in Philly

Can Cards stay together in 2009?

When the Cardinal's incredible run ended in Tampa just less than two weeks ago, many football fans and experts felt that this was one of the best Super Bowls ever played. Sure, when everyone looked at the matchup prior to kick-off, many felt the Steelers held a decisive edge, but when the game concluded many realized this was a closely contested battle between two heavy-weights that were able to throw and land their best punches.

Now that it is all over, Steelers fans are confident they have a team that could possibly make a run in 2009, but what about Arizona. When the game ended, I'm sure many felt this was a good team that has an opportunity to repeat in 2009, if it can stay intact. But then that's the real question isn't it?

With Warner considering retirement, the loss of offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and linebacker Karlos Dansby likely to become an unrestricted free agent, Cardinals fans will have to wait to see what happens with their team in the Desert. With everything considered perhaps one of the biggest question marks moving toward free agency (set to start Feb. 27th) will be wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

Boldin unhappy in the desert...

It's no secret that Cardinal's wide receiver Anquan Boldin is an unhappy camper under the sun. It is hard to imagine why a player that signed a $23 million, 4-year contract extension would be unhappy, but maybe if the organization you played for reneged on a promise to rework your deal, you might understand. Not likely since I won't ever see dollars like that, but that's neither here nor there..

(photo by David Kadlubowski / The Arizona Republic)

When Boldin entered the NFL back in 2003, he was the Cardinals 2nd round pick (54th overall) out of Florida State. As a late second round draft pick, Boldin did not receive a huge pay day when he signed with the team as a rookie. But after three impressive seasons with the Cards that included two with over 100 receptions, after the 2005 season the team rewarded Boldin with a four-year $23 million contract extension.

So what's the problem?

From 2005 through 2007, both wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan had impressive runs for the Cardinals. In three seasons Fitzgerald collected 272 passes (in 44 games) for 3,764-yards and 26 touchdowns, while Boldin hauled in 256 passes (in 42 games) for 3,458-yards and 20 touchdowns. Fitzgerald received a four-year deal for $40 million. According to Boldin he received a promise to rework his four year deal that was only one year in.

A new deal was never struck and Boldin entered the 2008 season an unhappy player in Arizona. Clearly Boldin has proven to be one of the leagues best receivers and feels he's as deserving of as big a payday as his counterpart. Whether there was a promise or not, Boldin was asking for the Cardinals to show him the Quan.

That was over six months ago and all of that has now changed.

Is this Red-Bird is ready to soar as an Eagle...

No new deal was signed before the 2008 season, a season that Boldin showed his guts, skills, heart, and determination coming back from a severe facial injury in Week 4. Boldin gave his everything, perhaps to show management what they would eventually lose or maybe to display to any potential caller what they would be getting.

Recent whispers across the desert sands according to the Arizona Republic have the Cards seriously looking at possibly trading Boldin and according to ESPN's John Clayton there are a couple of teams from the East that could make a play. A player of Boldin's talent and caliber is unlikely to accept a deal to any non-contending team and when you look at possible suitors, the Eagles or Giants make sense.

Could Boldin really be traded? Well I have to say there's something oddly familair about this whole disgruntled wanting a trade situation. Just about the time Boldin was entering the NFL, the Eagles were involved with signing another number 81 that wanted out of somewhere. This past season, McNabb and company sure did make a nice run into the playoffs, but it did look as though there was a missing piece to their puzzle.

The Eagles have talent and speed on offense especially at the wideout position, but none of their current receivers have the size and strength of Boldin. With a player of his size and add the speed on the outside of DeSean Jackson and Kevin Curtis and you have a dangerous mix for quarterback Donovan McNabb. The Eagles have a few other holes to fill and questions to answer on offense, but Boldin in an Eagles uniform sure makes all of that easier to deal with.

While Clayton mentions that the Giants may be an interested party, it's pretty evident with two late first round picks that the Eagles are the front runners to make an offer the Cardinals may not be able refuse. It's never been mentioned, but if you're Arizona you don't want any prospect of a holdout heading into training camp.

If Boldin is unhappy it would make sense to do your team some justice by moving the frustrated receiver now, so you can use the additional draft picks and address some of your pressing needs on defense. The additional cap money made available would also make sense to be used to resign free agents like LB Karlos Dansby, QB Kurt Warner, and DB Arian Wilson (has one year left on current deal), as well as secure a player like DB Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie who likely be looking to restructure his six-year deal. The Cardinal's would also have the ability to upgrade their tight end position by signing someone like L.J. Smith (would a sign and trade deal make sense?).

The move to trade Boldin to Philly just makes more sense than not, simply because everyone could win. The Cardinals get to move on and address their needs not only in free agency, but in the draft with the additional picks. The Eagles would receive an instant boost to the offense and give McNabb something he hasn't had since the T.O. days. Philly would also have plenty of cap space to still be a player in free agency.

Could Boldin really land in Philly? I certainly don't see why not. I believe this Red Bird is ready to fly the coup and leave the desert. I don't believe the Cardinals are going to be able to resign him to a new deal. I can't see the team sitting on this one, when there so much to gain and so much to avoid like the negative attention and distractions associated with this whole scenario; facing a possible hold-out (ala T.O. in 2006). The last thing Arizona needs is a circus.

I believe it's just that time to trade Boldin and move on. Don't be surprised to see Anquan building a new nest in the middle of Lincoln Financial Field and wearing Eagle green before the start of the 2009 season.

That's my take.

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST

February 12th, 2008 11:00pm PST

David's Daily Digest
[of football]

We hit the 11 day mark, post Super Bowl XLII, but with just six days until the combine the 2009 season is steaming full-speed ahead. More player news activity this week continues with cuts, releases, waiver wire acquisitions, as well as signings.

Some less than worthy news...

The Redskins jumped all over the Bronco's castaway, running back Anthony Alridge, but there's nothing to note here it's not likely he'll have a huge impact in DC. The recent acquisition of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski to Oakland was nothing to see, just another senseless play by a team still trying to recover from last season's debacle. The former Panthers and Saints linebacker Dan Morgan was reinstated by the league today and returns to the Saints roster. Morgan is trying to make a comeback from an injury plagued season that forced his retirement.

This week's stories...

BUCS SIGN LUKE MCCOWN, REALLY?
Well it wasn't the signing of the century, nor was it the most lucrative contract ever, but just the same "really?" Not to knock on McCown, I am sure he is a capable quarterback, "quarterback of the future", that I am not sure of. At least the team to not invest all its' savings in Luke's arm. If he can find some Jedi in him, maybe he'll win the starting gig in 2009, but at $7.5 million for two years can he overcome "the Force" of an NFL pass rush remains to be seen.

COULD LT BE LEAVING SAN DIEGO?
It's hard to imagine the Chargers running back LaDanian Tomlinson in any other uniform that the Bolts, but in today's economy his $8.8 million salary in 2009, and considering his recent injury history, is it possible? There have been some quibblings about LT and the team restructuring his deal, but with impending free agent Darren Sproles to consider, at this point its a tough guess. One thing is certain LT says he wants to be a Charger, but after having two disappointing back-to-back finishes in 2007 and 2008 it would not be surprising if the Chargers did not share the same sentiment.

BULGER TO THE JETS?
So where did this come from? Sure, with Favre gone now, he come all of the stories angling one or another quarterback ending up in the big apple. We've already seen reports of some interest in Derek Anderson and there's even a headline or two indicating the Jets could take a shot at Kurt Warner (it's one helluva long shot). The 2008 Rams will soon want to forget last season, if they haven't already and quarterback Marc Bulger will try to put his past two unproductive years behind him. Anyone following the game knows the problems on offense for the Rams lie with their offensive line. Something that should be a major focus in the upcoming draft. Bulger still has some gas left in the tank at 31 years of age and the team has too much money tied into him. Don't expect to see Bulger anywhere but under center in St.Louis in 2009.

GARCIA TO HIT THE FREE MARKET
With the recent signing of McCown in Tampa, it's pretty clear that veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia won't be returning. At 38, Garcia because an aging and high risk signing at the quarterback position. Last season Garcia missed most of camp due to injury and was plagued through the 2008 campaign. It's not likely any team will come calling with a starting option, but he could land a few places as a serviceable back-up if he'll play for cheap money.

BURRESS' AGENT MAKING NEWS AGAIN
It seems the only times these days Plaxico is in the news is regarding legal issues, delinquent tax matters, lawsuits filed against him, and of course his felonious gun troubles. Now the latest is the actions of his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Recently Rosenhaus sent out a letter stating that his client was available for trade, to the disliking of his clients current employer. When you are in the spotlight for wrong-doing, doesn't it make sense to keep it low-key? Hey Drew, FYI pissing off the Giants and creating more negative attention and distraction is not low key.

COULD FOOTBALL BE RETURNING TO LA?
There have been numerous recent reports indicating the City of Industry is getting closer to bringing the dream of an NFL team returning to Los Angeles to life. A recent approved proposal for an $800 million football Stadium by Los Angeles's industry planning commission was the latest obstacle surpassed by the project developer Majestic Real Estate Co. On February 26th the Real Estate group is hopeful to get the final approval to the plan from the City Council. With the approval it appears that the next step will be getting a commitment from an NFL team to move to LA. Once Majestic has this, through private funds, the group can begin construction. From some whispers I have heard, if the glass is half full, there's a chance LA could have a team playing as early as 2010 or 2011.

FSH: WEDNESDAY WATERCOOLER

WEDNESDAY WATERCOOLER

The Other season is well under way...

For all the diehard football fanatics, there is no end to the season when it comes to the NFL. In just seven days the 2009 season actually starts with the scouting combine in Indianapolis. The seven day event will be covered by the NFL network with live broadcasts from February 21st to February 24th.

If your looking for the latest NFL drama, the place to start not long after the combine will be free agency. Some teams with plenty of cap space could decide to go on big spending sprees, when the Free agent market is scheduled to open on February 27th. There's no question that there will be plenty of big fish to fry when free agency starts, but the question is "which teams actually plan to use their big nets in the water?"

With today's economy where it is, there could be a sense of caution played by some GM's. Rather than put all of their eggs in the 2009 free agent market, some teams could opt to sit out the initial wave and follow a more cautious signing path. Always a possibility is the big ticket players getting caught up in some of the delayed movement and having to sign at a discount.

I would expect to see players like Albert Haynesworth, TJ Houshmandzadeh, and Julius Peppers to find new homes right away, seeing these level of players being able to sign on and make huge differences. It would also not surprise to see players that can still contribute with playing for new teams like Derrick Ward, Brandon Lloyd, Correll Buckhalter, and Zach Thomas, having to sign for less money.

Regardless of what is going to happen, there is no question that I, like the fans that bleed this game will be tuned in every moment to see what happens. Let the other season begin.

The GM Game.

Offseason starts with cleaning...

With just over two weeks until free agency opens, the fall-out continues around the league. The latest players to be served their pinks slips, WR Jerry Porter (Jax), and DB David Barrett (NYJ), and there are hints that more players like WR Ronald Curry (Oak) and QB Jeff Garcia could follow.

With the sudden rash of player releases, the pool of free agency gets deeper...

Let's Play GM...

Last week I took a look at four teams with a bundle of green to spend and considered some initial moves for them that made sense to me. So taking a look at a few more clubs this week, knowing more (well not that much more) today, than I did a week ago, how might free agency play for these teams;

In Kansas City ($33m under the cap)...
The saying is "what goes up, must come down." So what about what goes down (time to talk about football fellas)? When you are one of the leagues bottom feeders, really there is no other direction to go, unless you're the Detroit Lions (sorry Motor City). The Chiefs have a new "Chief" (Todd Haley) and rebuilding would make a lot of sense. With over $30 million dollars under the cap, Haley will have a lot to play with. Thigpen played well in the spread offense last season and it would seem that Haley could be bringing that type of philosophy with him to the Chiefs. He'll have some talent to start with in Thigpen and potential superstar receiver Dwayne Bowe. His first step and biggest dilemma will be, what to do about running back Larry Johnson. LJ wants out and doesn't really fit a spread style offense. If the team can move LJ, running back Jamaal Charles would make sense in the spread, but he's not an everydown back. The Chiefs really can't afford to cut Johnson and take a big cap hit. Trading him could be a possibility, but finding takers and orchestrating a sensible deal, chances are slim. What the Chiefs may need to do is the ole "NBA trade move." Take on some weight to unload their own cargo. Now that the Jets have some cap room, would trading Thomas Jones for LJ make sense? Ryan says he wants to run the ball and Jones is entering his 10th season. Just a thought.

In Tennessee ($31m under the cap)...
The Titans are an interesting situation. One of the leagues hottest free agents will likely be defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. The early word was the Titans would not be interested in spending a lot of money to resign the impending free agent. If Haynesworth is looking for a big pay day, it is more than likely he'll be leaving town to sign one. Some football experts think that Haynesworth could be inking a contract as large as $100 million, something the Titans apparently have no interest in. With a lot of cap space and likely fewer headaches to consider, the team will likely focus and building for their future will remaining in contention. The first order of business will likely be resigning quarterback Kerry Collins to no more than a two-year deal. Let's face it Collins is no spring chicken and he will likely be in the saddle one more year to mentor and help develop our QB of the future (Vince Young). The team has too much money tied to the kid to give up on him just yet. Maybe another year of seasoning under Collins could prove valuable, but if KC wants big 'Kurt Warner' type money, the future with Young will likely come sooner rather than later.

Now on the other end of the spectrum, teams like the Saints and Jets will have some even bigger decisions to make considering that both are well over the salary cap. Both teams have some weight to shed, but aside from needing obvious help they are going to have to look at trying to resign some key players.

In New York ($7m over the cap)...
This now becomes a very interesting situation in the big apple with the recent announcement of Brett Favre retiring. While Favre's retirement won't get them a whole lot of spending cash, it does give the team some breathing space. As the GM, lets' finalize Brett's intent to retire before we start taking his numbers off the books. With Favre making his extended vacation plans and eventual trip to Canton, our next item on the agenda will be addressing our specific needs. The new Big Man on campus is head coach Rex Ryan and he plans to run the ball more in 2009. With Thomas Jones (or Larry Johnson?) and Leon Washington, that is the team's strength. Ryan brings in a defensive attitude and he'll have a strong nucleus to work with. The loss of Favre now creates a pressing need at the quarterback position. At 9-7, this is a team that is close to being a playoff contender and neither Clemens and Ratliff appear to be the answer to fill the gap. One possibility that has surfaced and would make sense to the GM is Derek Anderson. Even though Anderson did not play well in 2008, he has shown ability in the past and put up big numbers in 2007. With a team that will run more, Anderson will need to do less.

In New Orleans ($5m over the cap)...
The Saints have loads of talent on the offensive side of the ball, but there defense is such a huge liability unless big changes are made, this may remain the same. Brees is still youthful enough to keep serving up the big numbers and he has plenty of targets to throw to, but if the offense is going to continue to get better then it will need to find help for the backfield. Bush is not the short yardage answer, something that handcuffed the team considerably last season. The first move will be to empty the cupboards on the defense and start from scratch through the draft. While there are some serviceable players worth keeping, high priced salaried players like DE Charles Grant, DE Will Smith, DB Jason David, and DB Mike McKenzie could hit the cutting room floor, unless some are willing to rework their current deals. Since cap space will play a big part in any lateral movement with free agency or trades, as the GM the first place I'll start with is the release of Deuce McAllister (more than $4 million off the books) and Jeremy Shockey (if there is any savings value).

The NFL is a tough business.

Of course I won't expect to receive any calls soon from any team owners for my brilliant football insight, but I have to remind, this is all simple conjecture and....if I were the GM.

Just as I have done here, next week I'll take a look at more team's current situations and consider recent transactions when addressing what I believe should be their next move.

So once again stay tuned.
(Wink)

My Football Notes:

No more waiting...

It was highly anticipated and much speculated, but now the waiting is over. The New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre has decided to call it a day and hang up his cleats. While his career is long and distinguished, Favre will be no more missed in New York than he will be remembered for the one and only season he played in the Big Apple.

It was rumored shortly following the end of the 2008 regular season that Favre was expected to again, announce his retirement. After 18 seasons and 269 consecutive starts as an NFL starting quarterback it became time for the Golden Boy to walk away. Behind him, Favre leaves a long legacy of greatness that should not be overshadowed or clouded by his change of mind and return to football in 2008. While his final season was not a complete success, what it stood for was Favre great will to compete and love for a game he gave so much to.

Favre had a great run in Green Bay and a accomplished career. He will undoubtedly be a first ballot hall of famer, which will reflect the great player that he was. Hopefully all of the folks in Green Bay will remember all the great things he did for their team, their city and this game.

Congratulations Mr. Favre, you will be missed.

FSH: DAVID'S DAILY DIGEST (FOOTBALL 411)

February 10th, 2008 11:00pm PST

David's Daily Digest
[of football]

More football for the fan to swallow, nine days into the post 43rd Super Bowl era. We have less than eight days before the combine starts, less than 17 until free agency opens, and then we'll be counting down to the 2009 NFL draft. And you thought football was over.

This week's stories...

BOLDIN NOT LISTENING
Not only are there reports indicating that Cardinal's receiver Anquan Boldin is not listening to any offers from the team, but ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that both the Eagles and Giants could be possible landing destinations for the unhappy red-bird. Philly, a sensible possibility and with two first round picks is considered to be the favorite.

HAYNESWORTH COULD MOVE
Its starting to sound more and more like, while Albert would like to stay in Tennessee, the team won't be able to pony up the big bucks to keep him. There's no question he will be one of the most sought after free agents when the market opens. While Tampa is being considered a favorite new home, teams I believe that could make a big play for his services are Denver, Arizona, and Kansas City. If Haynesworth is looking for a big payday it is likely he be playing somewhere other than Tennessee.

TO THE TALK IN OAKLAND?
The National Post's Mike Lombardi believes that Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens is likely on his way out and could possibly find his way to the Bay area playing for another dysfunctional team owner. No question the Raiders could use his help at the wideout position and already considered a team of misfits, T.O. might find himself right at home. The talk seems to be reaching a feverish pitch, but it seems it just the media doing most of the talking while the Cowboys remain steadfast, so far.

WARNER'S AGENT TO TALK WITH TEAM
Now that the excitement of the Super Bowl has passed, recent word is quarterback Kurt Warner's agent Mark Bartelstein is expected to open talks with the Arizona Cardinals. It's not a guarantee, but it certainly sounds like a good indication that Warner is considering returning more than retirement. Regardless of what happens with Boldin and his situation with the Cardinals, I believe Warner and his camp are going to only consider what is best for the 37-year old. Surely he has shown he's capable of playing at a high level and there are all signs that he can continue. Honestly, I would be completely surprised if Warner was not back in camp this summer.

FREE AGENT WATCH
The market is getting close to opening and with so many names expected to become available, fans will have to wait and see if the NFL experiences any of the same delayed signing we are seeing in MLB. While that may be a possible reality, there are sure to be some big signings out of the gate and some names to watch are; QB Matt Cassel (NE), RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG), RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi), RB Derrick Ward (NYG), WR Antonio Bryant (TB), WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Cin), WR Lance Moore (NO), TE Owen Daniels (Hou), and TE L.J. Smith (Phi). These are just a handful of the most notable players that could be available come February 27th.

TUESDAY (FOOTBALL) TALK

February 10th, 2008 9:37pm PST

TUESDAY (FOOTBALL) TALK

Everyday is really football talk day, but this was as clever as I could be for a Tuesday. Like the big apple and my neighbors loud wife, football never sleeps. It's 24/7 football on my radar and computers 365 days a year. The NFL players may be taking their long needed vacations from the past seven months of gridiron brutality that is practice, OTAs, summer camp, and of course the games themselves.

Sure these Gridiron gladiators deserve their time off, but football never sleeps and on some days nor do I. Free agency will be the big talk soon as the February 27th date inches closer, but then there is the April NFL draft that will find it ways here in no time; so many players to follow, watch, and note.

With the 2009 NFL draft fastly approaching the scouting combine will once again become the focus of attention as the college stars of today gather to demonstrate, perform, and take their first step in becoming the football heroes of tomorrow!

The 2009 Scouting Combine is scheduled to begin February 18th and run through to the 24th. The NFL Network will be covering live workouts starting on Saturday, February 21st through Tuesday February 24th.

What's Blogging....

It's only Tuesday and there's no football in site anyway. What is a grieving fanatic to do? With just 17 days until free agency opens in the NFL, I guess I could speculate what teams will do what and what players will go where. As much fun as that sounds, I just wonder what other fans are discussing on the internet as I check to see "what's blogging?"

I follow quite many of today's popular blogs online, most of them about football of course. Recently at "Chicks in the Huddle.com" I found some interesting dialogue about the Pro Bowl. I watched the game myself, of course and found it was entertaining, but I love football. I also noted a great mug shot of former Falcon running back Jamal Anderson (for the full story check out "Football news from a chick").

There has also been some recent written word at "NFL Gridiron Gab" on running back Darren Sproles of San Diego and Cardinal's quarterback Kurt Warner. It looks like both teams are trying to take the necessary steps to keep both in uniform for the 2009 season.

At the "Fanhouse" there is some scribbling that more teams are clearing their cupboards. In Houston the Texans have cut running back Ahman Green and linebacker Morlon Greenwood. No doubt the team decided to free up some serious bling by releasing a couple of non-productive and over-paid athletes.

There's plenty more to track online and plenty of blogs to check out. If you're like me (no date in years, then you've probably got more free time than you need to check them out. So keep reading sports, it a tough job and I've got to do it!

Fantasy Football Watch

There's never a day in the life of a fantasy football gamer that we are not thinking about our next move. Whether we are thinking about who to start in our weekly lineup to who we should take with our first pick in the upcoming (only about 479 days away) fantasy football draft. Every moment of thought is critical to making that decisive pick that could elevate you beyond your competition or sink your formidable fantasy football ship. (who comes up with this stuff?)

Sure there is plenty of time before you have to start prepping for your fantasy draft, but it's nice to keep tabs on the big-ticket names, their movement in the offseason could be in direct correlation with your decision to select or not to select them for your dominant fantasy squad.

The biggest and most notable recent online banter has been the speculation of wide receiver Terrell Owens. Last season, there's no question that T.O. was likely one of the top five wideouts picked in most fantasy drafts. With all the speculation surround his tenure in Dallas, we could see his value plummet if released by the Cowboys. Despite this past season's circus tent locker room, on the field T.O. is still a performer and can play at a high level. For fantasy owners, Big D is the best place for T.O.

Following the Super Bowl, the immediate question out of Arizona was the talk of quarterback Kurt Warner possibly retiring. It's still too soon to tell if Warner will return for his 12th season in the NFL, but two things are certain. If he does return, he'll sport Cardinal red and likely be a top three quarterback in most fantasy leagues pre-draft rankings.

Another Cardinal that became a popular subject immediately following the Super Bowl was wide receiver Anquan Boldin, and not for his play. Although this red-bird is still under contract, it has made national news his discontent with the Cardinal's organization and many believe he will likely be traded. A healthy Boldin in Arizona would carry a lot of stock in any 2009 fantasy draft, but if traded depending on where this Cardinal lands could change his fantasy value significantly.

While the big guy in KC has yet to publicly come out and say he wants to leave town, there's little doubt that tight end Tony Gonzalez, entering his 13th season in the NFL knows his best chances of winning an NFL championship are with another team. The Chiefs were 2-14 in 2008 and hardly have the makings of a turnaround like what the Dolphins experienced this past season. While anything is possible, it is very unlikely and the All-Pro tight end know this. I wouldn't expect to see Tony G lobbying for any trades just yet and as long as he is in KC he should remain one of the leagues more productive tight ends. However, if the team decides to trade Gonzo there are only a few places he would go, and most likely wherever that was could have a big impact on how much more productive he could be!

These are only a couple of players that I'll keep watching throughout the offseason. As their zip-codes could change, so could their value in the 2009 fantasy draft. Check back with me every Tuesday for more of my "Fantasy Football Watch."

Fantasy Fallout..

While I will be keeping my eyes on the NFL players that move from one city to the next, I will also be paying attention to those football players that are part of the fall-out of teams making changes, going in another direction, or just freeing up some cap money.

This season it looks like the first wave of notable names to hit the unemployed streets are running backs Ahman Green and Reuben Droughns (okay, not so notable). Green had little fantasy value last season, as he could not stay healthy long enough to accumulate any numbers. In New York Droughns could not crack the top three and saw most of his action on Special teams.

Another name to surface, that could soon find himself joining these two in line is Cardinal running back Edgerrin James. It has been long speculated that this was James' last season in Arizona and it sounds like the end could be sooner, rather than later.

A couple of players to watch over the next couple of weeks would be the Chiefs running back Larry Johnson and the Giants running back Derrick Ward. With Johnson's troubles off the field last season, he's another running back that could soon be out of work. Ward on the other hand is due to become a free agent and will more than likely test the market. The big question is where he could end up?

(PHOTO BY JAMIE SQUIRE / GETTY IMAGES)

Last season Chad Pennington and Cedric Benson were a couple of players that were released, but came back to have significant fantasy value during the 2008 season. I'm not saying that this will happen with those mentioned here, but this is the NFL so keep watching because anything can happen.

FSH: MONDAY MORNING HUDDLE

February 9th, 2008 11:27pm PST

[The Late Evening Edition]
Monday Morning Huddle

Remembering 2008

Sunday officially closed the books on the 2008-2009 NFL season with the annual Pro Bowl classic being played in Honolulu, likely for the last time or at least for a while. Not that I look forward to watching the game itself (I do watch it-I'm a football fan, gotta have my fix), but it does carry a certain significance marking the end of the calendar football season.

This happens every year. The build-up, the excitement of the 17-week season, then before you know it, it's gone. I had a lot of high hopes for the 2008 season, with my favorite team, to my fantasy teams, to jumping on a bandwagon to ride in the playoffs. Needless to say, my fantasy hopes came crashing with a horrendous thud with injuries to key players (as is always the case), my football team collapsed down the stretch, and wouldn't it figure that I would pick the wrong team in the Super Bowl.

All in all, there were a few personal frustrations, but the '08 season was hardly a disappointment. To the contrary, this past season had to be one of the more memorable with lots of promise looking ahead to 2009. Sure there is going to be some remorse with the season over and I expect to experience some post-football withdrawals, but I will do my best keep the football notes, spins, and numbers flowing as I continue to find my Daily Football Fixx!

Fantasy Fixx

The 2008 fantasy football season was nothing different than what fantasy fanatics have become use to seeing, but one thing worthy of note was the increased scoring from NFL as a whole. In week 12 of the 2008 season the NFL posted 837 points combined from all 32 teams, most ever for one weekend. For the year, the NFL averaged over 44 points per game, an increase from the 2007 season when the league average was 43.4 and higher than the 43.7 record set in 1983, after the league adapted the 16 game format.

So what does that mean? It means more points equals more fantasy points and if you play fantasy football, this is a good thing. And in 2008, no one scored more fantasy points than Saints quarterback Drew Brees!

Fantasy Stud of the Year: Drew Brees, QB (New Orleans)

There was no other player this season more dominant or consistent than the Saints Passer. This past season, Brees passed for over 300-yards in ten games, just missing an eleventh in Week 13 when he finished with 296-yards. Brees also threw at least two touchdowns in eleven of his starts, including four in weeks 12 and 17. What would set him apart from his competition were his big performances this year. Six times in 2008 the Saints passer would toss at least three touchdowns and throw for more than 300-yards ending the competition. Brees would finish his prolific season with over 5,000-yards passing and 34 touchdowns to snag these honors as my...

Cleaning House...

Looks like the Giant's have started their spring cleaning a little early. According the AP, on Monday the team has terminated the contract of several veteran players; Sam Madison, Sammy Knight, and Reuben Droughns. Oddly enough all three players suffered season ending injuries and did not participate in the post season. None of the three veterans were starters, yet Droughns was the team's highest paid running back last year. While there was not a huge load of money tied to these three, it sure does look as though the team is trying to free up some coin. Not to mention the team's current actions concerning wide receiver Plaxico Burress, it sure seems they are trying to collect all the nickels and dimes they're going to need to sign Jacobs and/or Ward. They'll need them all.

The word on the football street (Gridiron Blvd), according to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys have released troubled cornerback Adam Jones. Last offseason Jones was signed by the team following a one year suspension that he served while with the Titans. There's little question that the signing was a huge risk and in the end had little reward and even less return. With Jones no longer a Cowboy, you have to wonder who could be next to leave Valley Ranch. Most football analysts would be willing to bet that T.O. would be a good candidate and we don't see quarterback Tony Romo shedding any tears to keep his receiver put. With the house cleaning now in progress it will be interesting to see who is next to

More news from the football world, the Cleveland Browns joined the party and cut loose some dead weight. With Brady Quinn emerging as a strong candidate to start at quarterback in 2009 and Derek Anderson still on the team, it was time for the franchise to hand out a couple of pink slips to back-ups Ken Dorsey and Bruce Gradkowski. Both quarterbacks started a few games for the club in 2008, but neither is a legitimate option to compete for the starting job in 2009. Now that there's a new sheriff in town, when it's time to go, show them the door and don't let it hit you on the way out.

Not to go unnoticed, although they did most of 2008 campaign during their imperfect 0-16 season, the Lions have decided to part ways with an $8 million price tag attached to cornerback Leigh Bodden according to the Associated Press. Along with Bodden the team has released several other players, including defensive back Dwight Smith and wide receiver Mike Furrey in keeping with the theme "starting over with a whole new look." There's no question that the Lions would like nothing better than to disassociate themselves from the team that was and look toward the team they hope to be. With the free-agency Palooza only weeks away, it looks like the organization is just getting their coin together for their 2009 makeover.

Now that several teams have begun to clean house, the coming weeks are going to be very interesting, especially as we get closer to the February 27th date that opens the free agent bazaar. One thing to watch as the coming days pass, who will be next to go?

FSH: SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL STUFF

Sunday Night Football Stuff

2008-2009 Season ends in Hawaii

While for most of us the season was over at the conclusion of last Sunday's Super Bowl, for some diehard football fans, the complete 2008-2009 season came to a close this afternoon in Hawaii. The annual NFC-AFC Pro Bowl was played and offered what entertainment it could, considering this was just a glamorized and televised vacation stint for all those (Players) that were invited.

Following the coverage from the NFL Network to ESPN all week, you get a full sense that these guys are just here to enjoy the sun and have fun. Selected by the fans and the coaches, these players deserve to be here and fun they should have. For the fans the game will still offer some entertainment value being football, but for the fantasy football buff it's one last chance to see their Studs perform on a big stage.

While the game in many senses is meaningless, it still has a competitive flare with the best of both conferences taking the field. It also offers some sideline interest if your paying attention. If you can read between the lines there may be more than meets the eye. But for all interested there was still a game to play and play they did.
