FSH: THE WEEKEND HEROES (WILDCARD WEEKEND)

January 6th, 2008 9:47pm PST

Wildcard
WEEKEND HEROES

This past Wildcard Weekend was nothing less than an exhilarating venture on Mr.Toads Wild Ride. With big plays in Arizona and an overtime thriller in the San Diego, Saturday was just a taste of the NFL Playoffs. Sunday featured more big plays from the likes of Westbrook and Peterson. With only one round of the post season complete, football fans should get ready because there's plenty more excitement to come.

The Fantasy Notebook (notable mentions) for Wildcard Weekend....

What we think we know:
  • The Chargers managed to avert disaster on Saturday in a game that they were clearly outplayed. The biggest difference was the Chargers resolve to make the big plays when needed; timely stops (held Colts to 6 of 15 on 3rd down), a timely sack late in the game to take the ball out of Manning's hands, and the decisive 22-yard touchdown run by Sproles. Their matchup this Sunday will be a rematch with Steelers, a team that outplayed them when they faced each other back in Week 11. This go around the Chargers can not hope to rely on good fortune to move on in the post season.
  • Just as the Steelers-Chargers game is a rematch, when the Titans play host to the Ravens, this too will be a rematch of two teams that met back in Week 5. When these two teams met the first time, rookie quarterback Joe Flacco was just making his fourth start of the season. Mistakes plagued the young rookie in the team's first meeting, something the Ravens will be hoping he can rebound from. Now that Flacco has a post season win under his belt, the Ravens will look for steady play and their big play defense to advance further.
  • Just five weeks ago the Eagles and Giants met at the same site that they will be strapping it on at this Sunday. That game was won by the same Eagle's team that seems to be rolling right now. In Week 14, the Eagles defeated the Giants 20-14 in a game that wasn't that close. That meeting was just a dress rehearsal, the real dance is this Sunday. With McNabb playing well and Westbrook looking healthy, expect the Eagles to lead this song and dance on Sunday.
Fantasy Spotlight:

***Boldin Scores in Cards win...
The Cardinal's receiver did not see a lot of action on Saturday after exiting early with a strained hamstring. Boldin did manage a couple of catches before he left the game, including a 71-yard touchdown reception. His status for the Divisional round could be in question.

***Tomlinson Reaches End-zone in Limited Action...
The Charger's running back played very little finishing with just five carries. Tomlinson rushed for 25-yards and managed a short touchdown scamper, but could not continue as a result of an existing groin injury. His status for Sunday against Pittsburgh does not look good.

***Westbrook Totals over 100-yards in Win...
The Eagle's versatile running back did not find much room on the ground Sunday against the Vikings defense, but did break loose in the passing game with a 71-touchdown reception. Westbrook will be key in the team's matchup with the Giants in the Divisional Round.

Another Sunday and another week in the NFL, here are your "Weekend Heroes!"

WILDCARD WEEKEND

PASSING CLUB

QB-Peyton Manning (Ind)
.....the Colt's quarterback played well, but could not put the points on the board. Manning completed 25 of 42 passes for 310-yards, but threw just one touchdown in the team's loss.

QB-Donovan McNabb (Phi)
.....the Eagle's quarterback was poised, precise, and on the mark Sunday completing 23 of 34 passes (67% completion). McNabb passed for 300-yards and tossed a touchdown in the team's win.

QB-Kurt Warner (Ari)
.....the Cardinal's quarterback continued his magical season completing 19 of 32 passes for 271-yards and two touchdowns. Warner finished the game with a 94.7 passer rating to lead all quarterbacks during Wildcard Weekend.

RUSHING CLUB

RB-Darren Sproles (SD)
....the Charger's found dynamite in a small package on Saturday night against the Colts. Running back Darren Sproles stood tall like a giant amongst his peers on Saturday, carrying the ball 23 times for 105-yards with two rushing touchdowns, including a game winning 22-yard score.

RB-Adrian Peterson (Min)
....the Vikings running back came up with the big one early, breaking free for a 40-yard touchdown scamper in the 2nd quarter. Peterson would find the end-zone a second time and finish the day with 83-yards on the ground in the team's loss.

RB-LeRon McClain (Oak)
.....the Raven's running back stumbled early with a fumble that led to a Dolphins field goal, but McClain finished strong carrying the ball 19 times for 75-yards with a touchdown.

100-RECEIVING CLUB

WR-Reggie Wayne (Ind)
....the Colt's receiver caught four passes for 129-yards, including a 72-yard touchdown reception in the team's loss Saturday night.

....the Cardinal's receiver hauled in six passes for 101-yards receiving, including a 42-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter to put the Cardinals out front early on Saturday against the Falcons.

....the Colt's receiver led the team with six receptions for 97-yards Saturday night against the Chargers.

WR-Antonio Gates (SD)

WR-Roddy White (Atl)
....the Falcon's wide receiver was big on Saturday against the Cardinals, being targeted often. White caught eleven passes for 84-yards, including a 5-yard touchdown catch late in the game.
