Friday Football Diary

Dear Diary

Not only did we see a 40 year old turn back the clock this past Monday night, but we also saw greatness shine one more time. Was it his coming out party for 2009 or just vintage Favre being the legendary quarterback that he’s become? Either way Monday night Brett Favre not only recaptured some of his youth with some fantastic throws, but he also set an NFL record with his win over the Packers (his former team). In his illustrious career, Favre has now not only faced every team in the league he has also defeated every one of them (a NFL record).

And just as we watched one player take a dip into the fountain of youth, on Sunday we saw another come of age and one get a large does of reality. The Giant’s receiver Steve Smith sure seems to have really blossomed into something special this season, with 34 receptions and 411 receiving yards to lead the league. He has reached that pivotal third season and appears to be flourishing on schedule out of the shadow of Plaxico Burress.

The Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has been sensational this season, leading his team to a fast start at 3-0, but in week four he got a large does of reality. Now he didn’t really think it would be that easy. Last Sunday against the Saints, he was pressured (sacked four times), confused (3 of 12 on third down), and forced into making mistakes (four turnovers). Fantasy owners must remember he’s only a rookie, but he will learn and get better.

Sanchez may not appear to be the safest fantasy play these days, but he’s got plenty of upside and has already shown great poise. Fantasy owners needn’t worry about this kid bouncing back he’s got plenty of resolve just give him time.

Now on the other hand take a look a some players that may not be the best plays at the moment;

On Shaky Ground

Slow starts, struggles to get out of the gate, and not finding their rhythm early this season may have some fantasy owners sweating it out;

Questionable Plays for the moment:

QB-Mark Sanchez………..…….only 4 TD passes and five Ints.
RB-Jamal Lewis…..…95 yards rushing, just one touchdown.
RB-LaDanian Tomlinson….….70 yards rushing this season.
RB-Laurence Maroney………..78 yards rushing this season.
WR-Eddie Royal……………….……..just 8 receptions in 2009.
WR-Donnie Avery…….…..just 109 receiving yards in 2009.
WR-Dwayne Bowe………..just 107 receiving yards in 2009.
WR-Chris Henry……....just 78 yards receiving this season.
TE-Tony Scheffler…...just 71 yards receiving this season.
TE-Anthony Fasano….…just 4 catches, 18 yards in 2009.

10 Things to Watch for in Week 5

Here’s what I will be watching this Sunday afternoon and keeping my eyes on throughout the day;

  1. Will Terrell Owens (just 8 receptions) finally breakout against a questionable Cleveland secondary?2
  2. Can Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco get the passing game going this week against the Raven’s 23rd ranked pass defense?
  3. Will Earth (Jacobs) and Fire (Bradshaw) run for big yardage on Sunday against the Raider’s 26th ranked run defense?
  4. Can “Kid Sensation” (Mark Sanchez) rebound Monday night with a solid performance on the road at Miami?
  5. Which stud receiver will have the bigger game this Sunday, Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald?
  6. How will Bronco’s rookie running back Knowshon Moreno do Sunday against the Patriots in his first NFL start?
  7. Can Colts quarterback Peyton Manning keep up his torrid passing pace on the road this week against the Titans?
  8. Can Mike Singletary and his improved Niners continue their solid play this Sunday against the Falcons?
  9. Will the Vikings running back Adrian Peterson run for over 200 yards this week against the Ram’s 24th ranked run defense?
  10. How will Eagle’s quarterback Donovan McNabb and running Brian Westbrook do now that they are healthy enough to return to the lineup?
