The (Fantasy) Kids of Tomorrow

The Cream of the Crop....
Now that I have had some time to look over this year’s draft picks, it’s not completely clear, but there are definite signs as to which rookies we can expect to make some kind of impact in fantasy this season.

These are my picks of those that will have the biggest impact in 2009….

In the Arizona desert, the 31st overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft rookie running back Chris “Beanie” Wells figures to see a lot of touches in 2009. Last season the Cardinals made a change in the backfield inserting, then rookie Tim Hightower, something that did not pan out. With the release of Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower’s less than spectacular run, Wells could easily find himself in the backfield come kickoff time in 2009. He’ll compact, strong, and very tough and could become a featured piece in the Cardinals non-existent run game (ranked last in 2008).

In Denver, rookie running back Knowshon Moreno steps into a situation, where there is no current favorite and he’ll have a tremendous opportunity to not only win the starting gig, but become a featured player. Moreno’s versatility as a runner and pass catcher will get him a lot of playing time in the Bronco’s backfield. Moreno will have the luxury of running behind a very good line that ranked 2nd overall on offense in 2008.

With an accomplished veteran quarterback to lead the way, rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin could be one of those “better than you thought” fantasy sleepers for 2009. He’ll join an already talented cast with Kevin Curtis, DeSean Jackson, and Hank Baskett. With so much support he could easily become a standout in Philly just as Jackson did as a rookie in 2008.

We’ve got a long way to go before we’ll have a chance to see any of these claims come to fruition, but it should be fun to watch. There’s no doubt that Moreno, Wells, and Maclin will become commons names on Sunday at some point this coming season, but will they become common in most fantasy starting fantasy line-ups; something that will be worth watching.
